Don't count Ironton out just yet, the bench will be a lot deeper after 2 more games. The second half of the season should be interesting for the Fighting Tigers.

Having seen all teams in the OVC play at least once, here is my take:

Rock Hill: not a bad team, just not very deep. Actually led Chesapeake at halftime, so they can play, but haven't been able to play a full 4 quarters.

South Point: a little young and inexperienced. They play hard, but this OVC is tough, and with Seniors graduating from last year's champ, it just shows how tough it is to win back to back league titles in the OVC.

Ironton: very, very physical team. Once they get a couple of more players eligible, they should have the offense to go with tough post players. Although they may not win the league, they will definitely make some noise in March.

Coal Grove: Good, athletic team, but again depth is an issue for Coal Grove. They have played some very good teams really well, but not enough to win. As a D4 team, they should do well in the tournament, as long as they get a decent seeding.

Fairland: lots of young talent, but also a very solid group of Seniors. Outside, Fairland can play with anyone, but the inexperience inside is the one question.

Portsmouth: incredible talent, but not very deep. The issue I wonder about is their defensive intensity. When you watch OVC teams play, their defensive intensity is usually what sticks out. If Portsmouth brings a full game of defense, then they will be very hard to beat.

Chesapeake: probably the most balanced team in the conference. The Panthers are unselfish, and can beat you from the outside or the inside, and when they play defense, they can score quickly in transition.

There are still lots of games left, and whoever is crowned champion will have to earn it. In fact, I look for co-champions this year.

If you want to go see a good High School Basketball game, go check out an OVC game. Any OVC matchup will be well worth the price of admission.

If Gallia Academy was playing in the OVC this year, its record would be 1-5 thus far. People have said for years that GA would be in the running for a conference championship in every sport if they joined the OVC. Obviously, that's not the case. Good thing the powers that be in Gallipolis City Schools took the other non-football sports into consideration when deciding to join the OVC. They are having a rough preview season in OVC boys basketball.

This week's games in the OVC:

Tuesday 2/3
South Point at Fairland
Chesapeake at Gallia
Jackson at Portsmouth
Wheelersburg at Ironton
Coal Grove (OPEN)
Rock Hill at Minford

Friday 2/6
Ironton at Chespeake
Fairland at Portsmouth
Rock Hill at Coal Grove

South Point at East Carter, KY

Tuesday will be interesting to see how the OVC fares in some out of conference games. I will be particularly interested in the Rock Hill/Minford game. This game could be a good gauge of the OVC, although Chesapeake has Minford at home next week. Also the Wheelersburg/Ironton game could be fun as well.

As for Friday...Judgement Day in the OVC: Ironton is playing much better, and the Tigers have a chance to take on Chesapeake on Persin Court, which is never an easy task. If Ironton is able to win that one, then that will give the Peake 2 conference losses with 2 tough conference games to play (Coal Grove 2/13 & Fairland 2/17), which could pave the way for the Trojans of Portsmouth to win the OVC Title outright.

Unless... the Fairland Dragons can go into Portsmouth and win that battle on Friday Night. In the first game in Proctorville, the Trojans jumped out to a big lead against the Dragons and held on. If the Dragons win Friday, and Ironton wins at Peake, then a three way tie for first place is possible. Whatever happens, it is going to be interesting for sure. I look for both of these games between the top 4 teams in the conference to be tough contests with strong players and smart coaches.

Hopefully, Friday's match ups will not hurt the teams who don't win negatively in the Sectional seedings. It would be nice if the OVC teams do not have to face each other until the Districts, but who knows.

Portsmouth is now 13-5 after a 61-49 win vs. Chesapeake and a 60-56 loss to Logan, both at Portsmouth this past weekend. Ethan Leonard, a 6-0 junior, has started the last 5 games and given the Trojans some offensive punch as well as more defensive quickness. He is an excellent 3 point and FT shooter, and his ballhandling has improved tremendously.

Both Ironton and Chesapeake will be rooting for Fairland tonight at Portsmouth. A Dragon win would give Portsmouth 3 conference losses. If Ironton beats Chesapeake tonight, then the Tigers would be tied for second place(only 1/2 game behind Peake) with three losses as well.

If Chesapeake beats Ironton combined with a Trojan loss, then the Panthers lock up at least a tie for the conference title. However, if Portsmouth wins, then their chances for an outright championship still exist because Chesapeake still has Coal Grove and Fairland to play.

Tonight is a pivotal night in the 2014-2015 OVC race.
