Re: Portsmouth @ Portsmouth West
If Portsmouth doesn't get out of that loose 3-3 defense they can call it a season! I was glad they went for it on 4th and 10 at the end of the game. Otherwise the outcome might of been Trojan win. Congratulations West!

When the school disses on the established teams many yrs ago, no join! LOL! Actually, Im not sure why they aren't in the soc2, but It doesn't matter. They are still getting beat by the SOC2!wipala wrote:Well PHS is now 0-2 in the SOC, tell me again why the league would not let PHS join. When you hire pop warner coaches you get said results. This coaching staff is something else.

Listened to this one on the radio. Sounded like a barn burner. Congrats on the hard fought win west.

Re: Portsmouth @ Portsmouth West
Thing is if Portsmouth would just play fundamental football few teams around here could beat them. Onside kicks all the time giving the other team field position. Going for it all the time on 4th down. Stupid. Faking the quick kick and going for it inside your own 5. I don't care if they did complete it. It's ignorant. How can you expect a team to play disciplined when the coach isn't? Lateralling the ball all the time. Crazy pitches off the option. And the coach says nothing to them.
If they play like that this year. What are they gonna do next year when the talent starts drying up?

Ur right, and I hope they give him sometime to get his program the way he can compete against the teams he plays. If he does, we are all in trouble!Westfan wrote:The way Portsmouth dogged Curt Clifford. Wonder what they will do to this guy. That is the most undisciplined waste of talent I have ever seen in high school football.

Re: Portsmouth @ Portsmouth West
Wow what an exciting game! 99.3 had ptown with 540 yards of offense and west with 350. Let me start off with the defense first...Ptown absolutely burnt the secondary of west pretty much all night except for the last drive in the 4th quarter. The D-line deserves a tom of credit, the ends were getting heavy pressure off the edges and they had the QB running around like crazy. The D-line did an absurd fantastic job tn shutting down the run game up the middle and pressuring the QB. The secondary looked awful, they got burnt so many times it's not funny. Welch had a tremendous punt that pinned Ptown inside the 1yard line, then with one play ptown went 99 yards down the field to score. Ptowns receivers had a lot more speed than West is use to playing against. You can't simulate that speed in practice. The coaching staff could have done a better job setting them up in coverages that would help out with having to guard that kind of speed, ptown just had too much speed for west to play man to man. Tackling was atrocious, there were so many missed tackles that led to ptown just walking in the end zone. There are a lot of things the defense needs to work on to have a successful season. Welch was a beast all night long on both sides of the ball, I have watched this kid all 4 years of high school and tn is the best game I have seen him play in his entire hs career. The kid did everything tn you really couldn't ask for much more.
Now to the offense... Steven Irwin stepped up big tn, he had one of the better games of his hs career also. Him and Michael Davis had it going on all night, he threw a deep bomb down the sideline as he rolled to the right and had to throw on the run. It was a beautiful pass and a great read on the defender. He made a lot of smart decisions tonight. Davis had some very nice catches and put his hands on display tn. Once again Welch dominated this game, he was just a beast running the ball tn. The offensive line deserves a ton of credit they opened up some huge holes for him and had some great downfield blocks to let him break off some big runs. This week was a vast improvement over last week on the offensive side of the ball.
Overall it was a pretty good night for the Siders. They kept fighting even after portsmouth had some huge momentum swings with some very big plays. They didn't give up and they showed a lot tn. They still have a ton of things to work on but it's early in the season.
Hats off to the Portsmouth Trojans, no reason to hang their heads. They played a tremendous ball game and had a very explosive offense. They shot themselves in the foot with some penalties in the 2nd half that were pretty big. They showed some guts with the fake punts and the Onside kicks. Great game between these two schools. Congratulations to the Siders!!!!

The Portsmouth coaches remind me of myself in 1996 when I was 11 years old playing playstation. It's ok to do playing playstation when you're a kid, but the way they just blew this game was ridiculous, there is no reset button when your stupid decision makes you lose. UNBELIEVABLE!!!! Great job by West being resilient and coming back, despite big play after big play by Portsmouth.

smartest play in high school football!!!! only a net loss of 10-15 yds since the average return gets u to the 35 !! and you risk no TD return

Not smart if the other team has a decent defense. Not ROCKET SCIENCE.cg-ironton fan wrote:dreamweaver wrote:I am glad Portsmouth kept kicking onsides kicks all night giving us great field position from the kickoff all the way through the game about.Who does that?

Scoring 40 points a game and losing would be hard to watch.
Re: Portsmouth @ Portsmouth West
Ask Newark catholic how smart the onside kick is, oh wait, they pinned West deep and played the field position game. They actually used their speed to cover the field and go tackle, and then played defense, leaving west coming out of their own end zone all night, the result, West had no offense. Give them the ball at the 40 or 50 and it's a whole new ball game as far as confidence and probably opening up the play book. I'm sure all coaches and teams at all levels would agree, unless you're playing video games as a child or coaching Portsmouth.cg-ironton fan wrote:dreamweaver wrote:I am glad Portsmouth kept kicking onsides kicks all night giving us great field position from the kickoff all the way through the game about.Who does that?

Re: Portsmouth @ Portsmouth West
wonder why burg does it alot ? :122246 i suppose it boils down to coaching preference !! IMO the net loss of 15 yds at max is worth the reward of maybe recovering the onside kick and getting 2 scores back to back !!!black76 wrote:Not smart if the other team has a decent defense. Re: Portsmouth @ Portsmouth West
Burg does it because they can. Portsmouth was counting on West not being able to put together an offensive drive based on one game? Trojans have to know everyone comments on how bad their defense is,and they have plenty of veteran players on West. Not too smart especially if the opposing team goes down and scores in minutes. Then do it again and again. That is crazy.
Re: Portsmouth @ Portsmouth West
Several teams do it because they don't have true kickers, (most of southern Ohio) but usually it's a squib kick down the field resulting in the team still getting the ball deeper in their own territory than mid field. I'm sure west was kicking it on the ground to keep it away from #1 and #18, but most teams aren't going to have guys like that who can score at will when they get the ball in the open field.
