We will be better in all facets of the game this year. How many wins that equates to is anybody's guess.

Re: WEEK 1 IRONTON @WHEELERSBURG-AUG 29
I listened to Michael Bennett DL from Ohio State talk from the Big Ten Media Day in Chicago and he summed it up pretty well. He used one word to describe what a lineman needed to be in order to be a good lineman. Sure you had to have the techniques down but you had to be one thing. You had to be NASTY. He said he didn't mean to cheap shot someone but when you lay a block, stay with it until you hear that whistle blow. Let that guy on the other side of you know who the boss is. Nasty, be nasty. Bob Lutz would have loved this guy. Ironton lineman need to take this young man's advice. This is the secret to Ironton's success this year. I've watched them in practice and they are big, they run well and they have been hitting the weights. Now they need to be NASTY.You're Tiger Bait wrote:another thing is attitude , for decades we had most teams beat before we left the bus.
this was because of extremely physical play and good fundamentals. but we had an attitude.
now we are looking for that back and everybody has the attitude with us.

The key to irontons season will be their d IMO. They will be fine offensively but their d will have to step up.

Our college offensive college used to tell our Oline the same thing that they need to have a mean nasty surly attitude.RiverRatRay wrote:I listened to Michael Bennett DL from Ohio State talk from the Big Ten Media Day in Chicago and he summed it up pretty well. Here is the bottom line. You win with talent, you lose without it.However,in Ironton's case they were very young last year and a lot of the kids have gotten bigger and stronger since last year. There is talent on that roster. Some people think that it's an attitude or coaching problem. It's not. With the exception of Bob Lutz who could set up a game plan depending on his roster, all coaches are at the mercy of the team's overall skill level. Some are better at using their players abilities than others. Some times the talent just isn't there. In the tigers case, they have the talent to make the playoffs.

I went to practice this morning and the Tigers had a couple visitors. Bob Lutz and Mike Burcham was there watching them go thru their paces. Coach Lutz stayed on the sidelines during the practice but Coach Burcham saw a couple things he could be of help with and he went out on the field and did his thing. The Ironton kicker is very impressive. I will venture to say that he will be able to hit his field goals from at least 45 yards out by the start of the season. The coaches timed the kids today and their times were very good. No I'm not here to give out times but I will tell you when a 290 pound lineman gives you a fist pump and a big YEA! when they tell him his time, you can tell his hard work is paying off. Some very fast times recorded today. I think this team just may win a couple games. Quite a few folks working around the stadium putting the finishing touches on the old lady. She is really looking sharp. If you haven't been there to see her you are going to be shocked.

Wait do you win with coaching or not? You start off saying its all about talent, but then you contradict yourself saying that some coaches are better at using their players abilities than others. That seems like coaching trumps talent in that case. So which is it?artisgilmore wrote:Here is the bottom line.

Things are sounding good, talked to a couple people with the same outlook on the Team as you've stated. Sounds like we have a pretty darn good Kicker too, what's his name and grade if you know?RiverRatRay wrote:I went to practice this morning and the Tigers had a couple visitors. No,great coaches trump good coaches, good coaches trump average coaches and average coaches trump bad coaches.Lutz's teams made the final game with talent I think 8 times. He also got them 2 or 3 games into the playoffs with average talent.Even Bob couldn't get to the final 4 without above average talent.

I happen to agree with this. Vass had a lot if talent his first year but he was green. Talent trumps everything.

almost 100% coaching so give it 90% coaching 10% talenttigercannon71 wrote:Wait do you win with coaching or not? great coaches make adjustments at halftime or sooner!!!!!
great coaches can make average kids look exceptional!!!!!
Re: WEEK 1 IRONTON @WHEELERSBURG-AUG 29
Are you saying Coach Lutz would have had the same record at green? Great coaches still have to have talent. Ironton used to have a boat load but with the numbers going down and the fact kids don't want to play, things have change.cg-ironton fan wrote:almost 100% coaching so give it 90% coaching 10% talenttigercannon71 wrote:Wait do you win with coaching or not? Yea its good to have talent, but it doesnt matter what kind of talent you got if you dont have a good coach to use that talent. Coaching trumps talent.
Re: WEEK 1 IRONTON @WHEELERSBURG-AUG 29
Avg to good coach with great talent vs great coach with avg talent, which one you taking
