Post by icanpickem »

Jerry Snodgrass is OHSAA Assistant Commissioner.

Jerry Snodgrass ‏@Jerry_Snodgrass 5h

#OHSAA FB in '14, 30 pt difference in 2nd half = running clock. New FB regulation part of all Regulations adopted at May Board Meeting

Bret Shroats ‏@BShroats5 2h

@Jerry_Snodgrass @fcsdathletics explain what the 30 pt difference means.

Jerry Snodgrass ‏@Jerry_Snodgrass 1h

@BShroats5 anytime point difference is 30 or greater in 2nd half - clock runs continuous per #OHSAA FB Regulations. Permitted by NFHS rule

That's dumb it takes away playing time from young players that need to learn. This is football not YMCA basketball for 6 yr olds.

I agree I don't see what the purpose of this is,I thought the coaches already had the power to let the clock run if a game got out of hand

Doesn't sound good for the younger players.

Make it so the starters will be taken out until it comes back to a two TD game.

This would have been a great idea for when there were leagues with huge disparity in roster sizes before they re-aligned. Our league notably had D2 power Licking Heights playing against D7 loser Millersport. 80 players vs 20... that's where the mercy rule would've been great... decrease the risk of injury in the second half.

Sorry, but I've witnessed games you want the clock to run.

Another rule that's not needed. And it will take snaps away from the younger kids whom don't get enough freshman/jv games as it is.

I don't like it. Id rather the coaches work it out. It will take away from jv kids and I think id rather take my lumps on the score board than get mercy ruled.

Instead of a 'mandated' running clock - I agree - allowing coaches to decide sounds reasonable.

But still, they can do that. Just give the coaches the power on Friday nights to say "no we don't want a running clock."

The refs from the Sp v. Fairland game last year would have loved for this rule to been in effect then.

This will dramatically affect the game/season/career stat book. Going to have to have a pre-rule change leaders book and post-rule change book. Just like some of the ole timers think they are the scoring leaders because they were pre- 3pt line

This rule is horrible!! Coaches should have the power to make that call. This hurts the chances of younger kids a chance to play. Fans didnt pay money to watch a game that lasts an hour.

Excellent rule and it's about time!

This rule should have never been needed but unfortunately a few coaches have ego problems and grind other teams into the dirt. Most coaches are classy enough not to run up the score.

Interesting to note: 3 of the 7 state championship games last season would have implemented the rule at some point in the 2nd half(D2, D6 and D7).

In the case of D7, the clock would have run continuously from 4:33 left in the 3rd quarter.

I thought it was only if it was a 30 point lead at the half, I assumed it wouldn't kick in if a team when up by 30 with 7 minutes to go in the 4th quarter.

Hmmm....not sure.....I figured when snodgrass said "anytime" it meant anytime in 2nd half. Guess we'll need a little more clarity on the situation.

I agree it will drastically effect the younger kids getting varsity playing time. In my opinion this rule would never have been considered if not for a couple of games last year that got way out of hand.

Younger kids will get all the playing time everyone wants them to get. Now coaches will just be a little more creative in keeping the margin under 30 points. It's really not difficult.

This rule also sends a good message to everyone; that running up the score is not acceptable and should have never been acceptable. There's always a few people who are slow to catch on or who just don't seem to get it.
