John playing dumb keeping his comments to himself I figure. John is a good guy hope he survives this fiasco. One of the admin said they always post jobs every year on OSHAA. YEA RIGHT 1st time I can remember. Maybe they should post their jobs yearly instead of no term limits???? OH my bad most are double dipping saving the tax payers tons of $$$$$$ each year LOL. Because of this it's why teachers are getting hard to come by because they see the writing on the wall that there will be no retirement system for them left in a few years.eaglesrock wrote:Hey guru, have you heard anything else about this situation? I talked to one of the current players and according to him they have gotten no word from the school that John is not coming back.
FUTURE OF LOGAN BASKETBALL

Re: FUTURE OF LOGAN BASKETBALL
The issue is not with Helber. Is he the best basketball coach I have ever come across, no, but he is not coaching for extra money. As many of them are. This is an issue with administration. Someone in admin wants there own coaches. (already has Football & Girls Basketball). Then that person can throw weight around even more than currently.

… Coach Helber & staff are staying put - end of story … I believe the staff increased stature as former Lady Chief Varsity head coach will be on the boys side for 2014-15 as Coach Walsh will be with the freshmen boys next season … we WILL have to check the OHSAA bylaws however to see exactly how many "red headed" coaches are in fact allowed on the bench at the same time ( Coach Landis/ Coach Walsh MAY be pushing the boundaries - the research committee is looking into it)
… time to finalize summer shootouts/camps etc. … the business of putting the best TEAM possible on the floor for 2014-15 moves forward …

Coach Helber & staff are staying put - end of story / if this is true... why has Helber not started with Spring basketball 'practice'. Sometimes even recent changes need adjusted. How is it that Logan Varsity Basketball played less games for the season than anyone else on its schedule?

a2zhunter, I do believe they had 22 games scheduled, but due to the weather some games had to be postponed and we not able to be rescheduled. I am pretty sure John cannot control the weather.......

Re: FUTURE OF LOGAN BASKETBALL
This is good news for Logan basketball. Coach Walsh is a great "teacher" of the game. He coached the JR High boys (7th grade) when I was in school. He was fortunate to have talent that was easy to win with, but Coach Walsh went beyond just "rolling the ball" out and improved basketball players.pfloyd wrote:… Coach Helber & staff are staying put - end of story … I believe the staff increased stature as former Lady Chief Varsity head coach will be on the boys side for 2014-15 as Coach Walsh will be with the freshmen boys next season … we WILL have to check the OHSAA bylaws however to see exactly how many "red headed" coaches are in fact allowed on the bench at the same time ( Coach Landis/ Coach Walsh MAY be pushing the boundaries - the research committee is looking into it)

I think he'll do a nice job with the Freshman boys and help improve the basketball program. For years Logan has need to improve the "program." That can only come with consistency at the top. Add in a "vision" and you'll see improved results.

Glad to see the addition of Walsh to the staff, he is a solid motivator and teacher of the game. He will have his kids ready to take the next step.

I have also heard this stuff about HEY I coached them when they were 6th grade and we were undefeated now look at them as varsity their below .500. Maybe if these same critics would open their eyes THERE is a BIG difference between 6 grade and H/S. Mostly being they are not playing a inner county schedule with their hand picked teams. And this stuff about coaches not using them correctly I have yet to see 1 coach who didn't put his best team on the floor. BECAUSE HE WANTED TO HAVE A LOSSING SEASON. These guys all know their jobs are on the line every year if they don't produce wins. And sometimes producing wins with no talent or under talented teams is hard to do. Until the higher ups get behind a coach and stop letting Mom and Grandma, aunt Lucy and Dad run the program nothing will change. LET COACHES COACH.noreply66 wrote:Sitting around here and there in Logan I have heard a lot of table talk about the Logan team. I would say most of the negative has been...............Logan had good players but the coach didn't know how to use them.

eaglesrock - As per my previous post. I don't blame Helber. I place the blame at Admin - They post a mans job and then tell him he can have it back if no one else wants it and also lies about 'posting it every year'. I do believe everyone in Southern Ohio had roughly the same weather but while other teams Admins got games reschedule we just lost out. I am comparing apples to apples, as I stated, talking about teams on Logans schedule

… the biggest reason for Logan not being able to make up games WASN'T on the Logan end of the "rescheduling" issue … Logan and all the other SEOAL teams had only 8 league games due to the small number of teams in the SEOAL giving the league teams playing 14 non conference games … the teams on the Logan non conference schedule HAD TO make up their league games which made decisions of which games to make up conference vs non-conference games - non conference games lost out … then you throw in the Wellston tourney - ALL of the teams lost out on those games as the tourney was scrubbed due to the weather conditions on that weekend … Logan was scheduled to play Cleveland Martin Luther King HS in that tourney - this same MLJ team canceled their game with Portsmouth at Portsmouth due to weather conditions in Cleveland … Sheridan/ Vinton County were games that didn't get made up due to the league vs non-league decisions that had to be made by the Logan opponents …

… there is a mandatory 28 day "no contact" period beginning the day after the last game is played for the team … this isn't NEW so this "Spring Basketball practice" ? that you speak of couldn't have started prior to the end of the Logan Varsity "28 day no contact" time period during ANY prior year …
Re: FUTURE OF LOGAN BASKETBALL
Let's end all this BS! The admin needs to make a clear decision about Coach Helber I for one would give him at least one more year to improve the program, I will call the Supt with my concerns. We either get behind Helber or boot him out and go on!

… hoping to get hold of the Logan schedule for next season soon from Coach Helber … movin' on to 2014-15 …

"Improve the program". What exactly needs to improve? Let me guess more wins!!!! In order to win you need talent. I saw Logan play twice, they have decent players but no real talent. So where do propose that Coach Helber gets talent in one year? It's high school basketball people, coaches have to deal with what is available. Unlike the college programs that so many of you seem to make comparisons with, high school coaches can't select the best players around. You folks at Logan need to get behind your coach, you would be surprise how much that would benefit your program. By the way at the high school level wins don't always equate to a good program anymore than losses means a bad program!!!!!

Re: FUTURE OF LOGAN BASKETBALL
Sounds like Helber should start looking for a new job. Logan teams were loaded with seniors if I recall. 20+ football 6-8 basketball. Basketball returns the big boy that made All-State but after that....? I do agree with Tossithigh - it does appear Admin could provide better support. Why does Logan not have a student section?
