Re: FUTURE OF LOGAN BASKETBALL
When has Logan EVER been relevant in Hoops over an extended period of time?..I mean seriously. I mean they have had some pretty nice players but they have never been very good on a continuous basis. And I definitely question the ability of some of their Coaches from the past. And then they were always in the position where they had absolutely NO post-season hopes. Which had to be tough..Every year...

Re: FUTURE OF LOGAN BASKETBALL
I think his best team had two loses, ap #5. Blow out lost to State champion de sales and I think Athens. Ik they had one league lost. Can't remember if that was the shot after time expired
Re: FUTURE OF LOGAN BASKETBALL
The 1985-86 team was Hardman's best team. Logan lost to #3 ranked Brookhaven that year on the road but then beat them on a buzzer beater at home by Keith Myers. They also lost to Bo Reid and Lancaster that year in the District final but not to Athens or DeSales. Logan went 19-1 regular season, 22-2 over all, winning 21 games in a row. 8-0 in SEOAL and ranked #9 in AP.
But to rebute what General said, I agree its been a long time since Logan was a player in the SEOAL. 2000-2001 was the last league title Logan won. And that was also the last time Logan made any run in the post season past the Districts. But since being put in the Central District it has completely hurt any legit shot at a decent seeding. The Central District takes care of its own. Logan could be 20-2 and still get seeded in the high 20s based on the fact they are outsiders. But no that itsnt the reason they arent making any noise in the post season, they are just out gunned year in and year out. We cant compete with Gahanna, Pick Central, Coffman, Grove City, year in and year out. We dont have that much of a return imo.

87 Final StandingsLogan grad wrote:I researched for three months and updated all the basketball records in 2006 and got a list of coaching wins so I'll go off of my own memory, but here goes
In the mid 1980s to 1988 Kirk Hardman
Several SEOAL Championships, AP #5 in 1987
1989-2005??? Gary Swinehart
SEOAL CHAMPIONS, took only team to ever reach regionals in 2000
2005??-2012 Keith Myers
Former player at Logan, could never get over the hump but solid coach
2012-present
John Helber
20 years as Logan JV coach before getting varsity job and this season will be his best team to date
Team W L P OP
Logan……… 9 1 586 515
Gallipolis….. 8 2 598 494
Marietta…… 5 5 625 607
Athens…….. 5 5 631 582
Warren Local 3 7 545 598
Jackson……. 0 10 521 707
That year Logan beat Gallia twice and lost to Athens once. Got the wrong year. That year Desales beat Logan 68-48. Desales was loaded that year.
Re: FUTURE OF LOGAN BASKETBALL
I wrote #9 it should be #5 and verified it from Hardman himself. I was right the first time. I think Logan was #9 when the beat Brookhaven who was ranked in top 10 that whole season. But we got up to #5 before losing to Lancaster. If you got the wrong year; honest mistake.
1987-88 was a great team. Jon Tompkins, Doug Stiverson (Logan Elm Coach) Tim Moore (LHS HOF) Sean Spatar, Jerry Gabirel, Jose Medina, Jim White, Sam Eggleston to name a few. Solid guards and good mix of post players. Athens was loaded from 1987-1990. Great battles with Logan.

Re: FUTURE OF LOGAN BASKETBALL
Those were some good Logan teams. Weird Athens and Logan don't play in basketball. Didn't matter how much better the other team was, always close games
Re: FUTURE OF LOGAN BASKETBALL
Looking ahead to 2015-16:
Logan returns 3 key starters:
PG Lane Little, could be up for SEOAL POY Honors and this could be a huge year for him; 5-9 175 SR ALL SEOAL in 2014-15
SF Isaiah Smith, has good size, can shoot and can slash, great defender; 6-4 200 SR, ALL SEOAL Hon Mention in 2014-15
SG Cole Baron, good scorer, has worked hard on the defensive side, will need to be more consistent; 5-10 170 SR
Another player who started a few games and played a lot
PF Corey Henthorne, great size, broke a backboard two weeks ago on a dunk, needs to finish better around the rim; 6-6 270
New comers competing for Varsity spots:
Caden Landis 6-3 Soph SG, good quickness can get to the rim, shoots well
Brady Walsh, 6-0 Soph PG, natural leader, distributes the ball well, good defender
Denny Powers, 5-9 PG, Senior, another solid leader, will need to make the transition to varsity
Chase Walter, 6-3 SF, Senior solid footwork, good defender, needs to get better finishing around the rim, could get alot of mins in the post where Logan is thin
Tommy Breining, 6-2 Junior SF, another good player in space, but he too has had past troubles missing easy shots, it will come with experience
Bo Myers, 6-3 SF/SG Frosh, this kid has a ton of ability and will push for a spot if he can show he can play at that level. Summer will be a huge measuring stick and early scrimmages.
Coby Bell, 6-0 SG, Frosh, another talented player who will need to show he can play at a high level
Caleb Bell, 5-10 PG, Frosh, again, youth may come into play but he has all the tools to be a great player.
Wes Brooks, 5-9 PG, Frosh, solid defender, smart, aggressive doesnt make many mistakes but will need to prove himself
Sam Evans?? 6-4, SG; Good player but left team last year; rumor is he may come back out. He has varsity minutes but will need to play within himself
I am sure I am missing a few but it will be a very competitive offseason with many new faces looking to get on the roster and grizzled Vets looking to stay.

Re: FUTURE OF LOGAN BASKETBALL
Kind of have to apologize for dissing Logan Hoops like I have. A couple pretty fair Coaches in all honesty in the last 40-50 yrs and some really nice players and some pretty darn good ballclubs!! Lot of the time the Athletic Program was led by a person who wouldnt know the difference between a basketball and a tennis ball!!!
... I watched a lot of these kids play and boy could they play!!!

Re: FUTURE OF LOGAN BASKETBALL
Well it appears the future of Logan Basketball just got a little foggier. The Logan School Board voted 5-0 to not rehire Coach Helber after the superintendent assured him he was returning. It was my understanding that he was even made to sign a ridiculous document of stipulations and had several meetings all pointing to his return by said Superintendent only to be voted down by the school board. This all stems from disgruntled parents who felt the staff mishandled a kid who is no longer a student at Logan as well as playing time. I was also told the same group of parents has been calling the local radio station to get some sort of smear campaign going against Coach Helber to up the firing factor locally. Logan has now canceled team camp next week at Ohio U as well as all of the summer activities bc of this recent activity. I am embarrassed to be a part of this community today. The continued dismissals of qualified, dedicated leaders in our sports programs due to parents complaining over nonsense has got to stop. Logan continues to be mocked by the actions of the administrators in certain positions and it will continue to haunt the district as long as this continues.
The list is long and impressive of the coaches that have been asked to "resign or be fired" in the past 7 years over conflict with a parent or some outside influence who didn't agree with the way things were being done. The inmates continue to run the asylum.

Re: FUTURE OF LOGAN BASKETBALL
What a blackeye for Logan! They wait until June is almost over to do something like this ? Hard to believe Stirn had no more influence on the board to have them produce a vote like that if he was so dedicated to bringing him back
They will reap what they sow.

Strange that the BOE would wait until late June to act .. Whoever they get, they better not drag their feet like they did on Helber.
The girls coach would be my choice..
Re: FUTURE OF LOGAN BASKETBALL
It wont be the girls coach. He told me that he was perfectly happy where he was at. Now if anyone was paying attention all year there was some undermining going on from the bench. One kids not even a good JV player but he was on the varsity but that is nothing unusual at Logan especially if your dads a coach. So I'd say your new coach is already in the system. GOOD LUCK WITH THAT PARENTS you thought you were unhappy with John just wait.

This has to be embarrassing. Wow.
Logan Grad, I feel for you buddy.
Why would the girls' coach want to be involved in the dysfunction of the boys' program? The girls' program is loaded with talent, would not be surprise to see them in the regionals very soon.
Good luck to my friends to the north.

Re: FUTURE OF LOGAN BASKETBALL
Ill take a guess here and ill assume (even tho I shouldn't) that you're referring to the two kids who DRESSED varsity for PLAYED JV last season; who's dad's are on the staff. They were on the varsity to fill numbers for kids allowed to dress. They had like 5 mins of time the entire season. And out of everyone on the JV that started those were the two best options to have on the varsity to sit just in case. As far as the next coach hired, it will come from out of the district if the current trend is any indication. Football, baseball, volleyball and GBB have all been hired outside of the district.trubbguru wrote:It wont be the girls coach. He told me that he was perfectly happy where he was at. Re: FUTURE OF LOGAN BASKETBALL
To have a 5-0 vote was there some problems which have not been made public? Will we have an interim coach this year since it is almost mid summer? Who in there right mind would leave another head coaching job this late? I would like to see a Bobby Knight type of young aggressive coach! Let the fun begin!!!!!!!!!!!!!
