Re: Final AP girls poll
Has Athens played a tougher schedule than Jackson? I'm not trying to start anything at all...just wondering a little more how it works. D2 looks pretty strong so I can see Jackson maybe not bring top 10 but just don't fully understand how Athens is 5 places ahead of them.
Athens is an excellent team...no denying that.

Re: Final AP girls poll
Counting out of state and a team up north...Athens has played some good teams
Re: Final AP girls poll
Eastern Meigs was the best team I watched all year. A legitimate championship contender.
Re: Final AP girls poll
I guess the wildcard in it all is how good were those teams at Disney....on paper they had nice resumes. Is there anyone that posts on here that attended these games? Who did they maybe remind you of around here? By their resumes they look lights out great but then Athens just busted 2 of them good and the closest game was 12 points. Athens has a very high end but I don't know a thing about how strong high school girls basketball is in those states.
bdubya and keyser.....in your opinion does the SE district get treated fairly by other parts of the state per AP voters? Does each district/region have equal representation in the vote? How many AP voters cover the SE district? Thanks for any answers and voting what you think is right and representing our area.

Glo.....did the same Melvin girl hit the buzzer beaters or did each twin do 1 each?
D3 SE District COY should be the easiest of choices. Several coaches have done an excellent job.....but OH has literally won every close game this season.

Ironman92 Macy Melvin hit the shot at Ironton while her sister Merrill hit the shot at Oak Hill!

Re: Final AP girls poll
Unlike Athens or Eastern Oak Hill dad no super star. Hale should get SE district coach of the year.
Re: Final AP girls poll
There are 7 voters in the SE district, but I don't know the exact number of total voters in the state.
I think we get a fair shake with the rest of the state, especially given the area's history.
With 800 schools to pick from in four divisions, I'd say that finishing the year with a 1, 2 and 5 is a great haul - especially given the fact that Frankfort Adena (76 and 94) is the only team from our district to ever win state.
We've come real close the last 15 to 20 years, and the state knows that we play a decent game in girls basketball. We are not overlooked.
Now, I'm sure you are curious as to why jackson isn't ranked higher. Some voters may see a team with 2 losses to smaller schools, even though both smaller schools are ranked #1 in their states.
The injuries didn't help during the main run of the poll. I voted for Jackson in every poll, but hesitated to push them higher due to 3 of your top 6 being hurt during key stretches. Beating Athens changed that, and it was the highest point total jackson received all year.
Athens was previously unbeaten and received #1 votes, so them losing a road game caused them to drop 2 spots. Jackson went from 3 to 4 last year with the loss at warren. It's par for the course usually.
I am speaking only for myself. It's not a perfect science and voters go about it in many different facets. The key thing, however, is to participate. It's the only way to assure that your area is represented in some manner.
Hope this helps, and please remember that I am offering info that I didn't need to. Regardless of what some may think, we are here to help our areas and our state.
Also remember a top 10 breaks down into the 8 regional finalists and 2 wild cards. That is what I try to pick.

Re: Final AP girls poll
There was a time when bdubya and others had to work extremely hard to get a southeastern Ohio team to be mentioned at all. They do a nice job of getting teams recognized here in the southeast.

Ten years ago, we had to pull teeth just to get Oak Hill to number 3. Amazing how time flies.MightyOaksFan wrote:There was a time when bdubya and others had to work extremely hard to get a southeastern Ohio team to be mentioned at all. Re: Final AP girls poll
Did the success of the Alexander volleyball team, Eastern volleyball team, Oak Hill boys basketball team, Oak Hill girls basketball, Eastern girls basketball team, Ironton boys basketball, Portsmouth boys basketball, South Webster boys basketball - and the recent success of Trimble and Athens football teams and Wheelersburg baseball team - maybe help with the perception of southeast Ohio sports since then, too?
I've been told this - but have no clue personally. Sounds reasonable though.

Looks like each division had 23 first place votes so guessing there are 23....7 that cover the SE is good. Thanks for the info.bdubya wrote:There are 7 voters in the SE district, but I don't know the exact number of total voters in the state.

Yes, it does help. And the longer we have teams make consistent postseason runs, the more credit we will get from other parts of the state.93Bulldog wrote:Did the success of the Alexander volleyball team, Eastern volleyball team, Oak Hill boys basketball team, Oak Hill girls basketball, Eastern girls basketball team, Ironton boys basketball, Portsmouth boys basketball, South Webster boys basketball - and the recent success of Trimble and Athens football teams and Wheelersburg baseball team - maybe help with the perception of southeast Ohio sports since then, too?

Oak Hill girls probably benefited the most from Sardinia Eastern Brown making three straight Final Fours before them in the early 2000s, and now they have three state runner-up efforts and two poll titles - making them a little easier to recognize. Eastern was 10th in last year's D-4 poll, but still made it to state.
The state learns your name at the state level, in any sport. Get there once, they know you. Get there again, they remember you. Win a state title, they never forget you.
We've made real strides in the last 15 years. Hopefully we will make even more in the next 15 years.
Good questions guys. Thank you for making an honest attempt to understand the ways of us evil minions. LOL!
Re: Final AP girls poll
Fort Frye finished up at #10 for the year. I'm not sure that the ranking is based on their achievements this year so much as strong post season runs the past two seasons. Still, it's nice to have our team recognized for all their recent success.
