TornadoCagers, You are just trying to get things stirred up, none of the coaches or Estep told any players not to play basketball. There is 7 varsity baseball players playing basketball, not even counting the JV or Freshman. also if Estep is telling the boys not to play then WHY did Parsley and Carmichael come out their senior season (they havent played for years) so dont try and blame the baseball program.

Someone is a bit defensive. Which coach am I speaking to? I wish I could tell more that goes on but I don't want my nephew being the one taking the backlash.

When the state championships stop and they will... Derek Moore was that good... And woodword and ater have had enough being taken advantage of, something will have to happen.

And lastly just because they are playing doesn't mean crap and in fact it sounds like the argument being made that the kids are never in the gym in the offseason. They are all at the baseball worships like otterbein baseball showcases. I remember hearing a current senior basketball player talking about d1 scholarships that Estep and the pitching coach could get him at a restaurant... Now he is hoping Shawnee might call his name according to my nephew. My nephew unfortunately doesn't realize he got trapped to the same concepts and never played basketball.

Sadly, these issues are small in comparison to what I hear daily at west. Burg people should be thankful

I can tell you know nothing about the Burg program, if you did you would know that Estep would not hold your nephew accountable for what his uncle says on a chat site. Another is yes the State Championships may stop someday but the TEAM doesnt practice for second place, and you are right Derek Moore is that good but he would tell you there isn't another team or Coach he would have rathered to play for then The BURG. Did your nephew tell you that Estep allows the boys that play football, that they can lift with the football team even though its closer to baseball season then football season.

Since the Stegman kid graduated, basketball team has been made up of athletes only. It still good enough to get them above .500 and be competitive most years. But if Burg basketball wants to get back to yearly trips to Districts and beyond, they need true basketball players to mix in with the athletes. Unfortunately for them, it sounds like the next true basketball player coming through is only in 7th grade.*
They had a good true basketball player but was run off by 2 coaches . Now starting as 8th grader in KY.

Well said FS! I know Coach Estep would NEVER tell a kid they would not start in baseball if they played basketball or football. A kid would not start in baseball only if they were not good enough to beat out the person in front of them. The coaching staff does not play favorites.

I can name 3 players that played on the state tournament basketball team in 2007, got beat in the semi-finals on a Thursday or Friday night and played in a scrimmage baseball game on Saturday. Those 3 also started in baseball, 1 for 3 years and the other 2 started 2 years. 2 more basketball players on that same team went straight from basketball to the track team. Just about every kid on that team played at least 2 sports and some played 3.

GTO: have heard that the 8th grader might be back at Burg next year, but don't know if there any truth to it. He is exactly what Burg is missing...would start as a true freshman which doesn't happen much there*

wasnt the burg baseball program pretty successful before moore? The 8th grader in question is a better baseball player than basketball and if you want to play for the best baseball program around I think the burg is the place you want to be.

Didn't Moore play basketball?

Sounds like a jealous dad mad at baseball team about their success. Jmo

I think you might be right about baseball, I was told he started as a 7th grader on the baseball team.

Yes, Burg baseball has had good success over the years. Dr. Rabbit can probably give us years worth of records in just about every sport. The basketball team had some great runs from around 1993 or 1994 to about 2009. Football has been dominate in just about every year. Soccer has had tremendous success. Track has been big. The common theme with all of these teams is that at some point, they all have had a down year(s) to some extent. Every team goes through a cycle where they have better athletes playing a particular sport and not another. Right now, baseball is that sport. It is amazing to see what all of these programs have achieved through the years.

Greenup Co. Is no slouch in baseball. They have done really well over the years. I know the games between Burg and GC have been good competition over the years.

I believe that Wheelersburg also produced at least three individual track state champions.......Bernard Tilley in the mile in 1970, Jonathan Dunham in the 400 (don't know what year(s), though). I also thought that Dave Pyles won the state title in the shot put (late 80's?), but don't know what year. I saw the state championship memorabilia in the lobby when Portsmouth played Wheelersburg in basketball last month.

When it comes to the winningest sports traditions in SE Ohio over the last 40 years, Wheelersburg and Ironton are at the top of the mountain.

Becky Barnett was a state champion in track from Wheelersburg. I am pretty sure she won the long jump and I think the other title was in hurdles.
