Ironladies, Walburn mentioned in AP Prep Notebook

Post by Keyser_sozeThrice »

The final item in this week's AP Prep Notebook by Rusty Miller, Associated Press sports editor of the Columbus Bureau, is about the Jackson Ironladies and head coach Matt Walburn.

Here is that excerpt: www.jacksoncountydaily.com

Interesting tidbits on JHS basketball history.

Adding to that cool stat is that Matt was the top golfer on 3 different SEOAL championships....though he did have AMAZING teammates.

Walburn is the man. Not only a great coach but was a great athlete as well. I hope Jackson knows what they have in this guy! Good luck to Jackson in the tourney!

Jackson knows exactly what they have....and if his 7th grade daughter plays basketball, he won't be coaching much longer.

Very nice article, there is not much lore in JHS Basketball in recent memory. The girls squad clearly in the last 10-ish years or so have gotten the most "press" and deservedly so, what a great group we have now, and then with Beth Howe several years back. The boys squad with the exception of a couple years around the Dusty Ford era early 2000's seemed to regain some competitiveness, and then back in the 90's with the team referenced in the article, after that you would have to skip a few decades most likely, hit or miss in 80's with a few good teams as best I can recall.

Coach Walburn has done a great job with these young ladies, very professional, very matter-of-fact, and has learned how to get the most out of them.

He was a great player and his dad was arguably an equally talented player, and Matt would be the first to tell you he never met a shot he didn't like (or couldn't make lol), and my understanding on the away trips his teammates used to tease him that as soon as he got off the bus he thought he was open.

Good Luck to the Ironladies on their run, glad to see them all back to healthy from most of the reports you hear, so make a run, exit Zane Trace and go take care of business the rest of the way as far you can...there is one re-match I would like to go see in Athens for sure.

My bad I92, have been out of touch this season with where play-off games are being held. Just assumed the District Final game would be at the Convo. Looks like that game will be at Southeastern this year if I am reading the brackets correctly.

If all goes as planned maybe we will get that re-match in Richmondale, not Athens. A lot of other teams probably have a different idea though, so one game at a time right?
