2014 SVC

Post by BudLytle »

What are everyones thoughts on the league this year. Should be several VERY GOOD teams that should provide for some very entertaining games. Here is my thoughts:

1. Unioto - They have to be the pick until someone beats them. Blevins returns in the circle as well as 2013 POY Gina Wright. They did lose some key pieces but with R Wright, Ward, Pierce as well as the 2 previously mentioned, they have some key pieces coming back.

2. Zane Trace - Been at or near the top the last couple of season. Again, a team that lost some talented athletes, but return Geno, Fry and others that will keep them near the top of the conference again.

3. Piketon - With the pitching of Dunn late last season and them not losing much (if anything), I look for them to make a run toward the top this season. Don't know about the coaching situation and how much this will impact their season.

4. Westfall - With this being Rosshirt and Tackett's senior season, I look for them to make a run at the title. They have a very talented roster and showed last season that they are capable of competing with or beating anyone!

5. Huntington - Lytle is enough to keep them competitive and I look for Irvin to have a great senior season. Depth of talent may prevent them from competing with the top teams in the league night in and night out!

6. Paint Valley - Return some very nice players in Riley, Stanforth, and Lightfoot. With the addition of Newland (incoming freshman) they could contend. I hear she is for real and looking forward to seeing her play and the impact she can have.

7. Southeastern - Continues to improve, but not sure they have the players to compete in this very competitive conference!

8. Adena - Lost several key pieces on a team that struggled to compete on a regular basis a year ago. Don't know much about who they are bringing in, but don't see them being able to make much noise for a couple of years.

Something else I wanted opinions on this year. I believe that we have some very good coaches in our conference and was wanting to get your take on it. Use only 2 words to describe the coaches in our conference. I will start it:

Jadwin (Unioto) - Just wins
Bennett (Zane Trace) - Manages Game
Redman (Westfall) - Good Hitting
Lytle (Huntington) - Small Ball
Medved (Paint Valley) - Fundamentally Sound
Cooper (Southeastern) - Building Program
Beeler (Adena) - Never Know

Lets keep in clean and not degrade anyone... Just thought it would be fun to get some opinions on the coaches in our conference.

A lot of classy coaches in the SVC. Always showed respect to opposing players and coaches.

2 things: I think that Huntington has to be right at the top. The Lytle girl is good enough to win a league game by herself. Tough call though as the majority of the SVC teams could beat each other on any given night.

What if you added Chillicothe to the mix. Where would you place them? I'm just curious. They lost 5 starters from last year but have some solid pieces. I kno that they aren't SVC but they do play most of them each year.

Chillicothe lost their pitcher and starting out fielders. Infield should be pretty solid. Should still be fairly competitive. Unioto should be hard to beat this year.

Has anyone heard if Piketon has yet to hire a new coach?

If so, who?

Thanks.

Warning this post gets a little long in the tooth,
You might wanna go head and take that restroom break, cook supper, do the dishes, fold the laundry, kiss the dog and kick the kids before reading-

HHS softball it's nice to know The X is missed by you
and the hundreds if not thousands
of other loyal SVC softball fans.
Sorry for my posting lag on the softball forum
but the X likes to focus on one task at a time
and The Great One has been busy wrapping up
a very successful Sherman Basketball campaign.

Just in case you are not aware
my beloved Lady Sherman's
of the Union Scioto Local School District
racked up the following Championships this winter:

Varsity Girls- SVC Champions, Golden Ball

Reserve Girls - SVC Champions

8th Grade Girls- 2nd in league and SVC tournament
(Only 3 losses, all to the South Eastern Panthers)

7th Grade Girls- League Champions and League Tournament Champions
(Only loss on season was to your young Ladies from the Township)

6th Grade Girls- League Champs and various tournament championships.

It's safe to say my Lady Sherman's
are a lot like their Name sake
(((General William Tecumseh Sherman)))
&
In the business of winning
and cuz let me tell ya
business is GOOD!

With the successful hardwood season in the books
it's time To go all Bob Seger
and "Turn the Page".

So on this eve of pitchers and catchers reporting
its time to Amp up the conversation
on the most electrifying sport
Played in the Scioto Valley Conference
SOFTBALL!

True SVC aficionados will tell you
the 2014 edition of SVC softball
has the potential of being the most competitive,
balanced and star studded league
in the History of all SVC Sports.
And for you doubters of this claim
tell me what SVC sport has returned this kind of talent:
2 previous Players of the Year
3 pitchers who have lead their teams to the regionals
4 pitchers who have pitched considerable innings for SVC championships
Numerous returning all league, all district and all state players
from a league which put two teams in the Regionals last season.
Folks we have all the makings for a season legends are made of,
one you will tell the grandchildren about no doubt.

Here is the X's road map for winning the SVC,
in this the most competitive of years:
( From the point of view of title contending teams)

Have your seniors vaccinated
for the title contending & tourney run ending virus
SENIORITIS
Symptoms include but not limited to:
Refusal to slide, not wanting bruised legs for prom and graduation dresses.
Missed practices or even worse missed games for hair/photo appointments.
Long Well manicured finger nails.
Grad Night tickets in their bat bag
Huddle talk always turning to senior trips or college plans.
After games Boyfriends hovering closer to the dugout then fathers.
These symptoms usually don't show up till May
but in some cases have been reported as early as April.
Sadly there is no cure after symptoms are observed
So act now and get all seniors vaccinated before it is too late.

You do need the good health juju on your side.
The league is so close an injury, any injury to a
Starter, will put a contending team on the bubble.

All the top teams return their Ace pitcher.
But must replace various other key positions.
The team that adapts the best/quickest to these
Changes will have a huge leg up on the competition.

Sweeping Southeastern and Adena,
if either of these schools knock you off start focusing on tournaments

You must defend the home cinder, 7 wins there.
I see no wiggle room in this,
one loss at home especially early in the season
and you will be playing for second place.

Of the 5 remaining games on your away league schedule
you must go at least 3-2.
(Yes I think two losses will win the SVC this season).
Now don't count yourself out if you go 2-3
on the rough road course of the SVC,
for 3 losses may just get you a share of the league crown.

As for my predictions-
It would be safe or the sane thing not pick any team outright
or pick multiple teams to finish in positions 1 - 3.
This is the season when a team you pick to finish in the bottom 4
makes you look real silly for doing so.
But no guts, no glory
so here I go again laying my SEOP's posting credibility on the line
and predicting how I foresee this season shaking out.

#8- Adena
Coach Beeler is in rebuilding mode.
SVC wins will be hard to come by for the warriors.

#7- Southeastern
Is moving in the right direction,
Capable of knocking any of the big dogs off
Just not enough depth to keep them in the title hunt

#6- Paint Valley
The 2nd deepest pitching staff in the league.
Will have to prove they can run with the Big Dogs
Before I vote them off the porch.

(1-5 is where it gets real salty for the X)

#5- Piketon
Dunn is the most underrated player in the league.
In a league this stout you really got to start splitting hairs
When selecting the order of your top five.
I put Piketon here because not only are they faced
With replacing a few seniors
They are also facing a coaching change.
And with any coaching change it
Takes time for the players
and new staff to adjust to each other.
The smoother this transition is
The higher the Streaks will finish.

#4- Westfall
The Mustangs are loaded
And probably have the fewest
Question marks as to how their line-up
Will look at the start of the season.
This will be the pick I receive
The most justifiable flack over.
However they did not win the league last year
And they did not make the regionals last season
like the teams I chose to place above them.

#3- Huntington
Returns the most starters of the league leaders.
Was there a greater tournament win by the SVC last year
then the dismantling of the "BURG" by the Lady Hunstmen?
But with such greatness also came
the toe stubbing loss to Adena
Which is why I have the Lady Huntsmen this low.
This is the year they need to beat ALL the teams
they are supposed to beat
If The Township wants
their 1st ever SVC Softball Title

#2- Zane Trace
I don't have exact numbers in front of me,

********WARNING SOAP BOX RANT ABOUT TO START**********
I COULD IF THIS FORUM WAS STILL A HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL FORUM AND NOT TURNED INTO A 14/12/10/8 U TRAVEL FORUM!
Really we get it several travel teams are looking for one or two SPECIAL players to fill out their rosters of very good girls and families that play a very competitive schedule. How many different TOPICS do they need to START about the same thing? I searched back 3 pages trying to find last years SVC Thread but gave up after reading the same topic headers for the umpteenth time. 1 post by organizations would be sufficient with a list of which age groups have roster positions available. Teams look Pretty desperate making the same post over and over and over and over again. I truly hope the moderators of this forum get out in front of this issue before it ruins a great place to come and get information on HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL!
**********************************RANT OVER*******************************

Back on topic,
I don't have the numbers in front of me but
I believe the Pioneers lost 7 games last season
5 of those losses came within the first two weeks of the season.
Point being after ZT found their stride they were pretty hard to beat.
Making it all the way to the regional finals before bowing out
To the eventual DIII State Champions of Bloom Carrol High School.
The loss of some very good seniors and other key losses keep the Pioneers
In my #2 spot.

#1 The Unioto Lady Sherman's
"To be the man
You Gotta beat
The man"
Whaaaaahoooooo
Rick Flair Circa1986

The Sherman's not only won the SVC last year
but did so commandingly by 2 full games,
Heck the X may lose his U card
for insinuating the league champs
could have 2 losses this year.
The Shermans also won the SVC in 2012 and
was with in a few strikes of winning
The league in '11 and '10.
The Sherman's return Strong senior leadership
In Bre Harvey and Rachel Wright
And the deepest pitching staff in the league.
The Tanks have a proven track record of consistent play
and that is what it Takes to win the SVC.
But not all smells of roses in the land of Reformatory Dairy Air.....
we must replace 3 starters.
All of which started for four years.
Coupled with replacing 3 four year starters
from the class Of '12.
That's 24 years of starting championship experience
being replaced in just two seasons by the Sherman's
A daunting task that will be the deciding factor in
The Tanks quest for the
magical Three-peat SVC Championship.

itsabouthegame:
Nice job on your 2 word description of the SVC coaches.
even as great as the X is
I cannot top your list.
Well played my friend, well played

Since I cannot best you in list of two words wits
I will give my description of the SVC coaching fraternity
By honoring some of the talent they coach

Jadwin - "Makes All the Wright Moves"
Bennett - "The Geno-ius"
Lytle - "The SVC High-Lytle reel"
Redman- "His diamond Ross-Shirt is always in fashion"
Piketon- "gonna get it Dunn"
Medved - "Will find New-Land in the SVC standings this year"
Cooper - "One Ella-mentry season away from contending in the SVC"
Beeler - "A new Day is coming"

That could be seen as an insult...who or what is rusty at Unioto? I'm sure Brad Jadwin will be on top of his coaching game.

No open enrollments at Unioto this year just hard working freshman coming into the mix. Ashton Junk is back from a knee injury, looking strong, and Morgan Popp's speed can help replace the hole left from last years seniors graduating.

I'm a fan of Morgan Geno and Alayna Lytle. Can't wait to see if they added to their pitching resume. It looked like Alayna was throwing a rise ball late in the season last year. Morgan's a born leader and she'll take ZT places.

I think this year in the SVC will be just as exciting as the last 2 years. Anyone's game!! Now when need someone to challange X and make it more exciting. ;-)

For all you picking Huntington so low your going to be surprised. We will see who Stubbs there toe this year. Unioto has the most to replace of anybody. Zane Trace had two starters not play this year.
Huntington
Westfall/piketon
Zane trace/unioto
Paint valley
Southeastern

Coach Cooper is moving the Panthers program in the right direction. Takes time & patience, and he's doing a good job. Looking forward to the season this year with the addition of three solid freshmen to the roster.

OUCH!

Nothin like being on the receiving end of an unsuspecting hard punch to the gut.
Well at least you showed the X a little a mercy and kept it above the belt,
When I have the choice between the two The X always takes the "Belly Option".

While your great at expressing hindsight
How is your foresight?
How does the Belly Option see this years SVC softball league shaking out?
We could wager up some Pepto Bismol, charcoal pills, or Gas X on our differing opinions.

I sure hope the SEOP's blogger " The Nutcracker" stays off the SVC Softball thread

I don't see how Unioto can lose the SVC this year. Returning most of, if not all of their key contributors from last year. Also the biggest school in the league helps out. Should be another "Golden" season for the Purple and Gold. Hopefully they can make a run in tournament!

Belly Option:
Interesting point on enrollment numbers.
Here is how you would pick them if going on size alone.

Unioto 229
Zane Trace 202
Westfall 193
Piketon 175
Huntington 158
Southeastern 144
Adena 132
Paint Valley 112

Division break downs around the area:

Unioto is D2 by 25 girls,

Zane Trace stays in D3 by 2 girls

Paint Valley is in D4 by 3 girls

Chillicothe is at 324, they miss D1 by 25 girls as well

I wonder how much a factor open enrollment plays into Unioto and Chillicothe being D2 schools?

That is a huge difference in numbers from top to bottom of the league, the results typically show as well. It is unfortunate that Unioto is in Division 2. I believe they would make a deep run in the Division 3 tournament, but it is what it is. I'm not 100% sure, but would have to think that if Unioto didn't have open enrollment, they would comfortably fit into Division 3.

If Unioto didn't accept OPEN ENROLLMENT, they very well could be dropped to Division 3..... BUT wait, if they didn't have OPEN Enrollment, would they have the same talent on the softball team... No, but that isn't any fault of players, parents, or coaches. We can just play the game as the numbers fall. Lets just pray for this weather to stick around so we can do some work on the dirt..

Good Luck to ALL the schools in the SVC, including Chillicothe. Enjoy watching softball in that area!!!
