Athens Bulldogs 2014
Athens Bulldogs 2014
The DI offers are starting to come in:
Joe Burrow - Ohio, Western Michigan, and Toledo
Trae Williams - Ohio
What do people think about the Bulldogs next year? Can they finally get past the regional final which has stopped them the last two years?

Re: Athens Bulldogs 2014
Are there any schedule changes for 2014? They only played 1 playoff team in the regular season and if you add in their 3 playoff games, they gave up 191 points in those 4 games. To win 3 of those 4 is very impressive, but not the way you want to have to win. Obviously, they have a great offense returning, but they need to tighten things up on the defensive side of the ball or they will have the same result in 2014. Eventually, you will run into someone with a good enough defense or be playing in poor weather conditions in November that will limit your offense.

If the Bulldogs had played in the SEOAL last season, they would've won a state title. The TVC is obviously holding them back.93Bulldog wrote:HA! It only took 6 posts to get that reply this time ... lolmoonshine wrote:Will be a good team with a weak schedule!

Re: Athens Bulldogs 2014
Trimble played one really good team during the regular season (Wahama) - and were in the state championship.

"If the Bulldogs had played in the SEOAL last season, they would've won a state title. The TVC is obviously holding them back."
They played 2/3 of an SEOAL schedule last year (2013) beating Gallia/Warren/Jackson by a combined total of 153 to 25 and still couldn't get past the regional final. Do you think adding two more SEOAL games would make that much of a difference?

All I Will Say, Cut and Run! BUT the annual beat down will start again in 2015!theplainsbulldog wrote:"If the Bulldogs had played in the SEOAL last season, they would've won a state title. The TVC is obviously holding them back."

Tongue in cheek my friend. Athens could have played in the red headed stepchild conference and still would've made it to the regional finals. Besides, last season, based on head to head match ups, the TVC was even, if not better than the SEOAL.theplainsbulldog wrote:"If the Bulldogs had played in the SEOAL last season, they would've won a state title. Re: Athens Bulldogs 2014
I don't care what league, what schedule - or who the hell it played during the regular season ... Athens was not going to beat Thurgood Marshal in 2012 or Marion Franklin in 2013 ... the strength of schedule had no baring what so ever - if it did - Athens would have never beaten Springfield Shawnee or Tri-Valley.
Only 1 team wins a state championship - every other team loses along the way ... Athens made 2 straight final 8 appearances and did it last year w/o a single senior playing offense ... it was impressive and strength of schedule played no part in it.

I agree all area teams were weak to average at best with a couple of good teams, with 1 outstanding team The Tomkittens.Dundas wrote:Tongue in cheek my friend. Re: Athens Bulldogs 2014
Athens will be one of the favorites in Region 9 - back-to-back regional runner-up showings and what the Bulldogs have coming back earns them that distinction.
Adding Zanesville is also a positive upgrade to the schedule.

Would have loved to have seen that game last year. Tons of points in that one.bman wrote:Athens will be one of the favorites in Region 9 - back-to-back regional runner-up showings and what the Bulldogs have coming back earns them that distinction.

While Zanesville will always be a good team it would be hard for me to imagine they would be as good next year as this year.
Re: Athens Bulldogs 2014
It's still a step up from what Athens has been playing non-league, even with Zanesville not being as good next year.

Re: Athens Bulldogs 2014
I'm not sure there is a single team in the region that returns as much as Athens. No players on offense graduated; all 11 return. After senior Bobby Sebring was injured against Tri-Valley, only 3 seniors played defense in the last game; 8 return.bman wrote:Athens will be one of the favorites in Region 9 - back-to-back regional runner-up showings and what the Bulldogs have coming back earns them that distinction.
19 of 22 starters coming back ... then toss in Zacchia Saltzmen, who missed the 2nd half of the season.
Crazy.

I would love to see Burrows and Williams in Green and White uniforms. My guess is that by the end Burrows will put up ridiculous stats again and likely getting some low level Big Ten offers, maybe even higher.
