1/10- Athens @ Akron SVSM

Post by Power 105 »

The game can be heard on Power 105.5 as well as 970 WATH, with the free Power 105 smartphone app and online at wxtq.com on Friday night with Jake Corrigan and Troy Bolin (AKA 93Bulldog) on the call.

The Bulldogs, ranked in the D2 preseason state top 10 with Ibi Watson and Joey Burrow, matchup against the favorites in state powerhouse St. Vincent-St. Mary. The Irish topped Warren in the state semifinals last season but fell short in the title game. The Irish' top player is VJ King, a sophomore wing that is one of the top prospects in the country. However, he is questionable with an injury, so the Irish will look towards Jalen Hudson. For Athens, this is a chance to put themselves on the map and make a name for themselves on a big stage at Lebron James Arena.

Pre game coverage on Power 105 and 970 WATH will start around 7:15 with tip at 7:30.

VJ King had been injured/not played for 8 games coming into the Firestone game ... wrist injury ... said he was happy to be back on the court with his players scored 20 pts I believe ... SVSM has 2-3 NEW "recruits" playing this season alongside King ... will be interesting to hear 93dog's broadcast this Friday night ... 93dog! it's a 2 hr 42 min drive to Akron SVSM from the Purple Palace !!! I hear they DON'T like purple hippos in Akron either !!!

I don't think Athens had a choice. After several teams dropped them all at once this summer they were forced to go find games.

I think the ASVSM game was wanted on the schedule. If I remember right, Jeff was trying to get that one before the other teams 'dropped' Athens.
I believe it is a 'home-and-home' too which Athens really wanted as well. To have ASVSM visit McAfee Gymnasium next year is a big deal.

I have a lot of respect for Coach Skinner for scheduling this game, and for his non-conference slate overall. Hopefully the Bulldogs will bring their best game to Akron.

Kudos for Athens to scheduling this game. Great measuring stick to see where they are and what they need to do to improve.

... I totally agree with Steely Dan this will be a great measuring stick for the Athens Team and the Athens coaching staff ... when you have expectations/goals to go deep into the post season your team needs to know what THAT looks like ... the coaching staff will tear apart the game win or lose, what did we do we'll, what didn't we do well and why, was it SVSM that kept us from doing what we wanted or was it us ... I love it when teams play UP for players to learn and coaches to teach ... Warren has done it this season scheduling Bishop Watterson, Wheeling Park, Fairfield Christian twice, Columbus Desales ...play the games, let players learn and the coaches have all kinds of teachable moments before/during/after the games - Brilliant !!! LOL ...

... no matter the outcome Athens becomes a better ball club ...

Lebron is actually "sponsoring" one of the new kids attending St. V. So he must be pretty good is Lebron is sponsoring him. I'm not sure which one he is thought.

I'm also sponsoring a player at SVSM. It was a toss up between "feed the Children" or sponsor a poor basketball player so he could attend SVSM. Since im a sports fan it was a no brainer. I was also going to help pay for the charter bus that Athens is taking up there but I guess the school is paying for it. Thank You Athens City schools!! Now why was it they left the SEOAL , something about travel and fuel cost. :122246
Any way back to the game. Athens wins this in a laugher... SVSM has no one to play with us... Go Dogs!!
