BEST team in southeastern ohio since 2003?

Post by UrbanOhio2012 »

I need some nominations for best team in our area since 2003... I know we will never know the true answer but this will be fun.

The reason for only going back to 2003 is calpreps.com only goes back to 2003 for "project a matchup".

calpreps.com will give us some sort of answer to questions like who would win 2013 Athens Bulldogs or 2003 Ironton Tigers and the answer FYI is Ironton (03) 38 Athens (13) 34.

This is the only way to get unbiased answers.

Maybe we could do a top 10 if we get enough nominations.

2003 Ironton is my pick for #1... someone name a team that could beat them

2008 Logan Chieftains.

According to CALPreps:

2008 Logan 22, 2003 Ironton 21

2008 Logan 35, 2013 Athens 31

2008 Logan 24, 2009 Logan 21

(2006) Lancaster Fisher Catholic 24 (2013) Trimble 23

I'm surprised the score wouldn't be 7-3 or something like that.

Too bad 2002 West Senators can't be involved in this discussion.

I agree 2002 Portsmouth and Portsmouth West would be high on the list!

Tomcat fans won't like this but...
2013 Athens 42
2013 Trimble 28
This is one of the first match ups I did today when I thought about this idea

2008 Logan 31
2013 Trimble 14

BUT TO MAKE YOU HAPPY
2013 Trimble 28
2006 Nelsonville York 17
which correct me if I am wrong is the best N-Y team from 03-13

Locos-

I still think that '08 matchup of Chillicothe/Logan was one of the better games I've seen in a long time. Knights vs Angle was one of the better QB matchups SE Ohio has seen in awhile. Too bad field conditions weren't ideal and it was raining the whole game. I didn't think either team showcased their talents that well that game, but still 2 of the best in SE Ohio that year.

2013 Zanesville is by far the best but I'm guessing they don't count since more central Ohio.

best local teams
2013 Athens
2013 Trimble
2012 Athens
2009 Logan
2008 Logan

This Athens vs old Logan teams would be fun to watch. I picture just like the Tri Valley game. Back and forth, high scoring

I agree, West that year would be right in there with any of those teams.

2007 Westfall Mustangs.

13-1 before losing to Coldwater in the State Semi's. Coldwater went on the win the title. Only had 2 of their wins by less than 20 points. Super impressive team, not sure how they overall matchup with others, but they definitely deserve a mention. My most vivid memory of that team was watching them run for 600 yards against a good Waverly team in the 2nd round.

The advantage Trimble has that all others don't is they can still help their ranking... with a win over Maria Stein Marion Local I would guess they would jump everyone mentioned on calpreps

2002 Portsmouth West- State runner ups 12-3 (They beat both teams in the playoffs that beat them in the season)
Fairland (3-7) W 59-0
Huntington (5-5) W 42-6
Portsmouth (11-2) L 18-27
Rock Hill (6-4) W 42-14
Waverly (8-3) W 49-7
Northwest (3-7) W 45-0
Russell (KY) (7-2) W 28-14
Minford (3-7) W 38-0
Wheelersburg (5-5) W 33-13
Coshocton (11-1) L 20-34
New Lexington (10-1) W 34-6
Coshocton (11-1) W 27-21
Portsmouth (11-2) W 34-18
Ursuline (8-6) W 13-7
Kenton (13-2) L 13-45 (Ben Mauks team)
There was a ton of talent in the Portsmouth area back then, the 2000 and 2001 Portsmouth teams had some amazing talent and would be in this debate if they were eligible.
Ironton would be too is those years.

Westfall was a good choice, right in the mix
2008 Logan 28
2007 Westfall 20

2007 Westfall 28
2013 Trimble 21

Zanesville may be out of seo but this is how they compare
2013 Zanesville 34
2008 Logan 17

Teams that haven't been mentioned that I thought may be are Wheelersburg, Valley, Minford, Oak Hill, Gallia Academy, Jackson, ... Which years are best for these teams that could be in the top ten? They seem to always be at the top.

I think it can be argued that some of Ironton's other teams since 2003 could beat Ironton's 2003 team.

2009 or 2010 Oak Hill Teams were good. Here's their two year records and scores

2009
8/28 A Chesapeake (4-6) [5:19] W 37-14
9/4 A River Valley (1-9) [4:15] W 38-0
9/11 H Rock Hill (3-7) [4:15] W 42-8
9/18 A Trimble (6-4) [6:23] W 33-0
9/25 H Minford (8-3) [5:19] W 20-14
10/2 H Sciotoville Community School (5-5) [6:24] W 34-6
10/10 A Notre Dame (4-6) [6:24] W 48-0
10/16 H Symmes Valley (8-3) [6:23] W 47-0
10/23 A South Gallia (3-7) [6:23] W 41-14
10/30 H Green (2-8) [6:24] W 49-7
11/6 H # Dawson-Bryant (9-2) [5:19] W 42-14
11/13 N # Ridgewood (13-1) [5:19] L 12-20

2010
8/27 H Chesapeake (5-5) [5:19] W 35-7
9/3 H Wheelersburg (9-3) [5:19] W 29-22
9/10 A Rock Hill (2-8) [4:15] W 37-0
9/18 H Wellston (4-6) [4:15] W 21-8
9/24 A Minford (9-3) [5:19] L 0-13
10/1 A Sciotoville Community School (3-7) [6:24] W 65-8
10/8 H Notre Dame (5-5) [6:24] W 27-7
10/15 A Symmes Valley (9-2) [6:23] W 40-13
10/22 H New Richmond (7-3) [3:12] W 28-7
10/29 A Green (4-6) [6:24] W 43-33
11/6 H # Dawson-Bryant (8-3) [5:19] W 42-12
11/13 N # Minford (9-3) [5:19] W 31-27
11/20 N # Fredericktown (13-1) [5:19] L 21-28

The two big things that stand out for those two seasons is having a two-thousand yard passer in 2009, a two-thousand yard runner in 2010 and defeating Wheelersburg since the late 60's, maybe 1968? Granted, they played in the SOC1 but, look at some of those scores. It would be a great debate to see how these teams would fare in a better/larger league.

That 2001 team sure was tough. If not upset by PHS, that team most definitely would have tangled with Kenton in the title game.

Not very well I'm afraid. Frankly if a team doesn't win at least a regional title, there is no way you can seriously think they are one of the best. West in 2002 was the last team from southern ohio to win a regional championship although there have been a handful of teams that have at least made the game. That tells you how hard that is to do and it's been 11 years.

Granted, they didn't win their region that year. However, look at both teams they lost to in those years. They both won regional championships and by default, Fredricktown in 2010 played Coldwater, who in turn had to play Ursiline and Ridgewood had to play Ursiline in 2009 also. Everybody in D-V at that time was either playing second banana to Coldwater or Ursiline. I would venture to say Coldwater or Ursiline would beat nearly any team in any region those two years. D-V was absolutely LOADED in 2009 and 2010.
