Malvern has been playing their best football. 7th straight year making playoffs and have won the the 1st playoff game 5 years in a row. I think it will be the 6th straight. Malvern 28 Caldwell 7...

This will be an evenly matched game. Probably the best in the region this week. Caldwell is sophomore dominated, they are going to be very good for a few years. They lost to a superior Monroe team. The only other loss was to common opponent Newcomerstown in week one. Caldwell was still running the single wing direct snap stuff then, spread it out after that an they have really played well. I think this will come down to whomever takes care of the football the best and hope Caldwell gets their first ever playoff win.

This should be a close one. I give the edge to Malvern since they have had some success in the playoffs before.

Anybody know much about Malvern? What kind of offense they run and some key players.

Malvern is pretty big up front and they ride one of the best small school backs in the State. (Plessinger) He always gets the ball at least 30 times per game, and he has even had a few games this year when he has got it 50+ times. He is a horse and first team all Ohio no doubt. The Hornets go as he goes. They do have a good athletic QB and a couple good receivers with decent breakaway speed. Their defense has been up and down all year. They shutout a decent Sandy Valley team, but got rocked by a very below average Ridgewood team that almost lost to Trail and gave up huge amounts of yards in a few other games. I think they are a little weak on the corners so Caldwell should be able to get some yards on the outside if they have decent team speed. They won their league this year outright, (IVC) but it is probably the weakest that league has been in at least 15 years. The are usually tough at home and it will be a pretty long bus ride for Caldwell so I would give Malvern the slight edge in this one. This should be one of the most evenly matched first round games in the state. IMHO.

Caldwell is led by RB Bricker Lori, and QB Tanner Clark, both sophomores. I don't have any stats, but i'm pretty sure Lori has eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark on the season, and Clark could be close behind. Lori is one of the stronger runners i've seen all season and can be quite hard to catch and take down once in the open field. Clark is an athletic QB who does the majority of his damage on the ground, but does have the ability to put the ball in the air. Baker is probably their top receiver. While not the fastest kid, he provides a big target, as he stands probably 6'3 and has incredible hands. Carpenter is probably their second threat on the outside. He's the more athletic and faster of their receiving duo.

The defense has been solid for the most part all year, only giving up 3 scores or more twice all year, with a couple shutouts. They're very opportunistic and seem to do a good job of creating turnovers. Shockling is probably their top defensive lineman, big kid who does a good job of both stuffing the run and getting pressure on the QB. Had a few key sacks against Frontier, and I witnessed Fort Frye use 2 or 3 blockers against him all night and still managed to get pressure on Lang. Rayner could also be one to watch. While not the biggest kid (probably doesn't go over 160), according to what I was told he was going into last weeks game one sack away from either tying or breaking the schools single season sack record. Maybe someone else can clarify on that.

Caldwell's only losses of the year came week 1 against Newcomerstown and week 4 against Monroe Central. After week 4 is when they really changed the offense, switching from a single back direct snap power running game, to a more spread offense. From the sounds of it, this game has all the makings to be a great one. Hoping this can be Caldwell's first ever playoff victory.

Jake I agree and hope that the Redskins bring home the victory. I really do like their chances in this game.

Malvern is the pick. Good team this year that gets physical at times. One loss to #2 state ranked Western Reserve by 8. I like the Green by 14.

I think this will be an evenly matched game. Caldwell struggles with Big physical backs. They have a pretty good defensive line but once you get into the secondary they are pretty weak. Caldwell does have a good Rb in Bricker Lori. The kid runs hard and you better be ready to gang tackle. I'm not super impressed with their QB yet. He is still young and you will have to get pressure on him. Malvern needs to stack the box and force the young qb to throw the ball. His only real threat is their tight end baker who usually lines up in the slot. He is a big kid and big target. if Malvern plans on running the ball 50 times up the middle then Caldwell will win this game. Malvern better mix in some passes or it could be a long game. But I hope its a good game and wish both the teams good luck and an injury free game.

And with all this being said neither team stands a chance against Shadyside next week.

Malvern averages 253 rushing yards a game. They average 51 rushing attempts a game. So needless to say they will run the ball close to 50 times Saturday night, because that's what they do.

Sounds like this is going to be two teams who want to play smash mouth football going right at each other. Regardless of the outcome, it's been a great season for both teams. To see Caldwell make the playoffs after coming off a 2-8 season last year is outstanding.

Found a few more stats for Caldwell. Lori finished with over 1,200 yards on the season, while Clark finished 899 passing yards and 958 rushing yards. And like someone mentioned, the Plessinger kid from Malvern sounds like a great back, as he finished with over 1,700 yards on the season.
