I hope no one accuses me of being anti Athens, but I have to pose these questions. One of the reasons given by Athens people for leaving the SEOAL is travel. It is the main reason some of them claim. However, when being accused of dodging the competition we now read that is not the case since, as some of those same Athens people claim, we are playing or are going to play almost all of those schools in the SEOAL now. And are even scheduling Zanesville in the future. In fact, I just read that Athens won the SEOAL in tennis last night. So is it okay for the tennis team to make all those long trips, but not for anyone else? Or is the travel claim not really a legitimate claim?

That's laughable, Biggz. Wellston would be murdered and so would VC. In that league N-Y would find it tough to compete week in & week out. Athens would have someone they could beat every year in Wellston and VC, but even the Bullpuppies would struggle . I assure you Wellston officals are smarter than that. There is a very good reason Wellston left the SEOAL and a good reason VC never joined. N-Y would revert to being Nelsonville again.

Athens claim of travel concerns has always been bogus.

1. the decision to leave the SEOAL and join the TVC came at a time when Chillicothe, Zanesville, Ironton and Portsmouth were still in the league!
2. sending a handful of girls on a varsity tennis team (not junior high, not freshmen, not junior varsity) to some SEOAL schools is not the same as sending a gazillion sports teams grades 7-12 all over southeastern Ohio 6 nights a week ... and once again, the tennis team and soccer teams only go to Warren, Logan, Jackson, Gallia ... they don't have to travel to Ironton, Chillicothe, Zanesville ... if they had too, they may have just stayed independent.

How about this: to make you guys feel happy and good about yourselves.

The only reason Athens left the SEOAL was so it could win. It had nothing to do with money, time, travel. Just wins. Even though we always played Alexander, Nelsonville-York, Meigs - we figured if we play them in weeks 8, 9 and 10 we would have a much better chance of winning ... and if we played Gallia, Warren and Jackson in weeks 1, 3 and 4 we will probably have a better chance of winning those too ... its all about what week you play the team - that's all that matters ... if we switch up those dates - we'll be good to go!

:)

Paladin..VC tried to join the SEOAL once. They were turned down. Yet again you spout off without any facts.

That would be my preferred league. I wrote a personal blog post on this two years ago. Wellston, Nelsonville and Athens were all founding members of the SEOAL too (iirc). I'm not really too fussed one way or the other, but that's a league I could get behind.

These team could make a stab at it. Football doesn't have to be the reason for joining a league.
Even when Athens was down in football-- didn't they compete well in other sports.........right off I know they were down in track also. look at Warren....at one time they were at the bottom of the SEOAL in football as was Marietta but they would run neck and neck for the all/Sport title. I guess money is everything.Wonder what the gate would be at Vinton Cty, Wellston, Meigs when Logan played in their stadium?.....maybe the rest of the SEOAL....Gallipolis, Jackson, Logan and Warren could only be football and allow other schools be in the league in everything else.

No it doesn't make me happy, nor sad. I was just asking a question. While we are fact finding though, in 2008 and 09 Athens chose to play Gallia, Bloom Carrol, Federal Hocking and Wahama in there non league games. The latter three not exactly SEOAL caliber. Then in 2010 and 11 they picked up Chilicothe (remember that was one of those long bus rides), and Coal Grove (a whole mile shorter than that long bus trip to Ironton). So though I am not accusing Athens of dodging anyone, I think it is hard to argue that mileage was a factor for not scheduling teams and then scheduling them a few years later.

Before someone slams me as a basher I want to add that I think Athens has done a tremendous job restoring the football program. One of the best in this part of the state.

So a what's next for the SEOAL thread turns into another bash Athens thread. The Athens move to the TVC happened five years ago, get over it. It's a beautiful day outside, do something productive.

If stating facts is bashing then so be it. I might also mention again that I am glad Athens is in the TVC. Just as I am glad Wahama is in the Hocking division. Both those schools makes the TVC a better league than it was before they came in IMO. Now if Wahama leaves the TVC claiming they no longer want to travel to Miller, Trimble and Waterford, and then schedules Miller, Millersport and Waterford any way I will question their giving that reason for leaving.

perfect league. Outside of Logan, all the same size and a close travel league

1 hr 45 min from Jackson to Logan is not close travel. Believe me, not a fun trip on a weeknight.
there is a road called 93. Far trip would be Jackson to Warren and Marietta. League before had Zanesville to Portsmouth. 2.5 hour trip of hell. That's why the league fell apart fast. Got too big too fast

Dead League other schools left should find new leagues or go Notre Dame style.

1 varsity football team going to 1 place on a Friday night is not the same as being a member of a league.

You fail to realize an athletic dept. is 6 grades ... 7th - 12th ... junior high kids traveling to Ironton to play a volleyball game on a Tuesday night? ... and then you have freshmen teams, junior varsity teams, boys sports, girls sports, doing the same ... this really comes into play during the winter when you have so many teams going so many places on so many days ... 7th and 8th grade boys basketball, 7th and 8th grade girls basketball, 7th and 8th grade wrestling, freshmen boys basketball, freshmen girls basketball, varsity and junior varsity boys basketball, varsity and junior varsity girls basketball, wrestling, etc ... etc ...... all these teams night in and night out were going all over the place - now they don't go anywhere.

Last season Athens football had more away games than home in league play - and traveled a total of 91.8 MILES!!! That is too and from.

They only left Athens County one time over the course of 5 weeks.

Now filter that down to about 25 teams over the course of a school year ... its insane how big of difference it is.

True ... but I've done this before: started dating one girl, a better looking one came along, so I switched.

How does that help?

What would the 4 teams in the SEOAL gain from having their own division of the TVC?

It could help in a sense.. if the SEOAL teams were in a large division of the TVC and a team decided to leave, they could pull a team from the middle division up therefore filling the hole of the departing team. Basically it would prevent what the SEOAL is going through now. Its hard to find a replacement from another league. Its easier if they're already a member. That, to me, would be the only real advantage of coming into the league.

I wouldn't mind it ... SEOALfootball.com joins trivalleyconference.com?

me and Locos working together? Plus, I would enlist Pfloyd to join forces as well ... it would be the best thing since sliced bread.

Move Athens to the Big school division.
Now you have 5

What would the 4 teams in the SEOAL gain from having their own division of the TVC?
