Re: Best Coach in Southern Ohio (Present time)
Talent will always make a coach look good. At the high school level it's hard to have talent every year so it's hard to judge who is actually a "good" coach or one riding the talent.
A good coach in my opinion can be seen as having good play calling, time management and the ability to have the respect of the kids, and the kids all listen to him even if they think it's right or not. Now days Parents have too much power and cry if "Johnny" isn't getting playing time and the coach feels pressure from the school board or such and is forced to coach a style that he isn't comfortable.
You can have the greatest coach in the world but if the kids just are not talented enough you won't win teams. Now if high school had true "recruiting" like college, we would see just how good teams and coaches were.

After seeing how far along Hinton has brought Chillicothe this year and with his history at Amanda CC, I'd have to think he is near the top of any list compiled. Paul Culver at Sheridan also comes to mind rather quickly and I'd be run out of town if I didn't throw Ryan Adams in the mix after his awesome job rebuilding Athens from laughing stock to a very solid program.

I agree. I believe that a true "good" coach is much of the listed above. I also believe that they not only win with talent as expected, but also compete when they are not expected too...they most always find a way to win. Based on my opinions of a "good" coach and agreeing with the above to make such a coach, in my area I would have to go with Lucasville Valley Coach Darren Crabtree. I feel he has all the said intangibles listed above and has a very solid staff, which is also IMO a key to a "good" head coach.
Also, on the so called coaches riding on talent...there are far to many to even name and I believe they expose themselves, so no need stating the obvious. :122245

A great coach is one who can get the community behind the program and also brings in great assistants. No matter who is coaching a team they have to have great assistant coaches to make it work.

In regards to turing a program around in the right direction and getting the community involved and supporting their team. I vote Brent Daniels of Minford, and staff.

Re: Best Coach in Southern Ohio (Present time)
I think Phil Faires from Trimble deserves a mention. They have been consistently successful for very long time. Div 7 schools normally have up and down years because of the limited numbers but his teams seem to always be at the top of their league and always in contention for the playoffs. He has had some of the best defensive teams I can remember and always seems to have some tricks up his sleeve offensively.
Also, the turn around Ryan Adams has made at Athens is just amazing. Before people start saying it was the move to the TVC they have killed Gallia and Jackson this year which proves they would be dominating in the SEOAL as well. They are producing some very good teams year in and out. They obviously have a very effective offseason training program to build all of the speed they have which goes perfectly with their great spread offense.
I promise I am not from Athens County. Just a honest assessment.
With that being said the BEST present time coach in Southern Ohio is Ron Hinton at Chillicothe. He became a legend at Amanda and has turned around Chillicothe into a powerhouse as well.
However, the best coach is Southern Ohio is presently not coaching though, COACH LUTZ!

Just came here to add his name to the discussion. Took LE from 0-10 to 12-1 in his first year should say enough, add in his great times at Westfall and Oak Hill and you've got a great coach with a great résumé.nice guy wrote:Scott Bartholomew of Logan Elm.

Im sure ryan adams is a great guy and coach,.. but any average coach could win with his talent. As long as ohio bobcats coaches have kids in the system they"ll be decent. How much coaching do u have to do to kids like burrows?? come on. Dont take woody hayes to win with talent that he has. single up your best receiver and throw the ball.,, in adams case.,, he has a few good receivers so teams cant put their best defender on their best receiver. a blind man could win games with these guys. 2015 will be a different story

I might agree with you on if I hadn't witnessed him at a Wheelersburg playoff game against Shanandoah at Athens a few years back stand in the endzone and constantly berate the Pirates and cheer for Shanandoah to, and these were his words, "kick our a$$". Very classless from a local coach if you ask me.Endzone_Warrior wrote:JS7_22 wrote:Talent will always make a coach look good. Phil Faires does more with less than any coach around. He usually has 3 or 4 really good played. And a dozen very average players that he puts in the right spot and then coaches them up.

Re: Best Coach in Southern Ohio (Present time)
I think with the retirement of Lutz at Ironton, Crabtree at Lucasville is the best coach in southern Ohio. He has built the best football program in the area. It will be interesting to see how this year plays out but Lucasville is now the program that plays for league championships and regional championships. They have not got the Regional title yet but they are the only team playing for them recently. JMO

Yeah it has to be Crabtree. People forget just how bad valley was before he came along.

Re: Best Coach in Southern Ohio (Present time)
What is a good coach.. someone who wins? I don't think that is all it is. I seen some very good winning coach's in Southeastern Ohio but not a whole lot of them i would really want to play for. To me the best coach is a good motivator, a great recruiter, someone you can trust, someone who really puts the team and school first, someone who helps the kids on and off the field. First if the coach is not a good motivator even with good talent it will show. You have to get the players to believe in you as a coach. As a recruiter you have to beat the halls in the school because there is a lot of talent walking the halls doing nothing, that's where being a good motivator comes in to play. Trust, If the players don't trust the coach no one else will either. Helping the players become more than just a football player is what a great coach does. He will let every player on that team know that he is like and he is there to help him or her on or off the field. This means setting up study groups for those that are having trouble in school. It means helping take care of those that have less too. Johnny or Sue can't play sports because they can't afford to. You have a coach that will do what I just said above and you will have a coach that will produce leadership on his/her team, and it will show up on Friday night or whenever they play. The great thing about it is everyone will be on board. I made it a point to make sure I knew every player or runner that I coach because if you don't know their back ground you don't know where their coming from. You have to win their hearts and once you do you have a friend for life not just while their playing for you. Hope you understand where I am coming from.
Re: Best Coach in Southern Ohio (Present time)
Faires also gets the benefit of playing one of the worst schedules in Ohio.
