Gallipolis' Logan Allison scampered 90 yards for a score on the game's opening kickoff, but Athens came back to outscore the Blue Devils 62-12 the remainder of the game to stun the Blue Devils, 62-19 in the season's opening game before a packed house on Memorial Field Friday night.
Bulldog junior running back Trae Williams was unstoppable in the Athens triumph, scoring five of Athens nine touchdowns. The 6-0, 190 speedster scored on runs of 2,1,2,65,and 2 yards.
Other Bulldog TDs were scored by Adam and Ryan Luehman, pass interception runback, Alex Goldsberry on a pass interception return and and Dakotah McFee, on a 75-yard sprint.
Besides Logan's first TD, other Blue TDs were scored by Wade Jarrell from one yard and And Allison on a 83-yard pass from Jarrell.
Athens racked up 20 first downs to Gallipolis' 13.
Gallipolis will stay at home and take on rock Hill in another non-league game on Sept. 6. The Redmen trailed Minford 26-6 late in the 4th period Friday. Athens will host Watkins Memorial next Friday.
GAHS still leads the all-ttime series with 44 wins against 38 defeats with three ties. The 43-p0int loss was Gallia's worst against Athens since a 45-0 loss during the 1943 campaign, . Athens biggest win ever over GAHS was in the first year of SEO league play, 51-0 in 1925.

Although not a perfect game on either side of the ball it was a good game by two very good teams. Athens defense really stepped up and was too much to cope with this early in the season. Athens O line did a very good job keeping the Devils D at bay for most the game. I personally don't think we saw tonight how good these teams really are. No 7 plays , 23 plays , and 33 doesn't go out . I think Gallia would have looked a lot different. Turnovers killed tho. Can't have . Defensively we were about as soft as I have seen and slow to get to the ball. You can't play D like that .
