Russell muscles their way to,42-6 win over Rowan County

Post by LICKING COUNTY FAN »

NO ROSTERS SO I HAD TO GO WITH NUMBER ONLY

One knew going into this live scrimmage Rowan was up against an area monster and it was going to take a near perfect performance to have a shot. Russell struck early and often ending any hopes the Vikings had to win or even to keep this one close.

All throughout this one it was apparent the Vikings run offense was not going to be effective enough to keep this one in this but that did not stop their offense from working on that part of the game nor did it appear they ever quit.

Now to the game.

The Rowan defense would show it was not going to be intimidated even if they were out match all over the field and with 8:59 left in the opening quarter #1 6 of the Vikings laid a NFL like lick on #1 from Russell, holding the back to a tiny gain.

At the 7:25 mark in the quarter it was #4 9 and #6 of the Vikings teaming up to crush #1 of Russell after he made a catch.

Russell would start to put an end to this one at the 6:38 mark of the opening quarter. That is when #4 rushed in for a ten-yard score as a huge hole was made by the hard working Hogs up front. #6 would make it,7-0. The drive went for 72-yards and take 15-plays.

Russell would get a nice run by twenty-yard run by #1 0 with 4:53 left on the clock. The Russell line was awake and ready to roll.

#1 1 would haul in a nicely thrown ball and pick up twenty-five-yards on the play, with 3:49 left in the quarter.

The seven-play sixty-yard drive came to a close on a #3 short touchdown run. The point after kick by #6 put the score at,14-0 with 3:06 left.

The quarter came to a close with a Russell recovery of a Viking fumble.

Russell only needed nine seconds to score their next touchdown. #1 7 connected on a 46 yard strike to #3 7, who was wide opened. The point after by #6 made this a,21-0 game.

With 6:43 left in the half Russell lit up the scoreboard again on a twenty-four-yard Barry Sanders like run by #4 . The drive took nine plays and totaled sixty-yards. #6 added the point after to make it,28-0.

#3 7 from Russell would sack #8 for a eight-yard loss, with 5"13 left in the half.

The Vikings as I stated earlier never gave up this would show big time when #8 dashed to a forty-four-yard score, with 1:53 left in the half. The point after kick was missed by #1 2 as the score stayed,28-6.

With 1:33 left in the half the Vikings defense showed it was not giving up with a sack on #3 by #51 .

52.1 showed on the clock and again the Vikings defense showed the no quit thing on a fine play by #4 0, who got to #3 for a short loss.

Russell overcame the nice play by the Vikings to score on last time in the half. The scoring play took place with 14.1 left in the half when #3 hit #21 for a fourteen-yard touchdown. #21 had to stretch a lot to grab this throw. #6 made it,35-6 with his kick.

The final frame went by quickly.

Here are a few of the bigger plays from it.

11:48 #3 6 Rowan sacked #8 for a big seventeen-yard loss.

8:49 Russell picks up a hunk of yards on a #3 to #1 8 pass play. #1 8 was as wide open as a receiver can get.

The final score from Russell came with 8:20 left, on a nine-yard run by #4 . The kick by #6 made it,42-6.

Russell looked to have one more score, with 43.2 left in the game but the no quit attitude of the Vikings showed up again, when #3 2 took the ball away from #1 7 at the goal line.

UNOFFICIAL STATS
RUSSELL
58 PLAYS
376 YARDS
13-21 PASSING 2 TD'S

ROWAN COUNTY
35 PLAYS
191 YARDS
PASSING 2-3

Just some thoughts on this one.

If you are playing Russell pick your poison. What I mean by that is stack the line and they can eat you alive with a nice little passing game, that can go long \when needed. Play the pass and a number of players will run you to death.

Rowan County will need a Doomsday like effort from their defense if they are to have any success this season. They, like many teams I watched this weekend does not have the talent to have any threat of a passing game, or their fine staff thinks the line can blow people off of the ball and only need their running game to succeed.

Russell's only Ohio opponent is Ironton.

Ironton doesn't worry about Russell.

Russell hasn't defeated Ironton since 1977!

I hope Russell has a solid year. I agree, ironton respects all & has no fear. Here's to hoping they get in the best shape as possible for the long haul & that August & September heat/humidity.
