Ok I don't know if this has been brought up or not, if it has then remove the topic. I saw where the President of the University of Georgia suggested an 8 team playoff system next year. I don't think it would be good for college football for the same exact reason as why the ESPN analyst mentioned.."the regular season would be a bust, if you are 11-0 or 10-1 or whatever, and you are in the top 8 teams...they could lose on purpose which would just ruin the game of college football", the reason why they would lose on purpose is because if they are pretty much gauaranteed a spot in the tournament then they are not going to want to risk their most talented players getting hurt. What about rivalry games? It could also make the meaning of those games pretty much fade if both teams or even 1 team are in the top 8 of the country?
I think as long as opening round games are played with home-field advantage, the 8-team playoff would be great. In that case, even Michigan at #1, for example, would not rest starters against OSU, because a loss could place them at 5th. That would lose them home-field advantage.
I like the playoff system as long as it's small (8 or less w/ homefield advantage)
You could also keep the other bowls in place for the teams who do not make the playoffs.

I would like to see a 4 team playoff with 2 of the big bowls (Rose, Fiesta, Suger, Orange) hosting the semi-final games and then rotating every other year - on Jan. 1st. This would make these bowls meaningful again. Back in the day these bowls impacted the national championship - now they don't mean a thing. Oh, and with this set up the championship game can be rotated to other cities like Detriot, Seattle, St. Louis, San Antonio (SP?) etc. where there are domes.
Oh, and do you guys realize that had there not been a BCS system, the Buckeyes would have won back to back national championships based on polls?

the reasoning behind teams losing on purpose is ridiculous. any team will tell you their main goal is to win the National Championship (that goal is more realistic for some than others, but that's the goal nonetheless) so why would anybody want to throw their chances of achieving that goal out the window just to avoid risk of injury? that's dumb, that's like refusing to drive your new car for risk of wrecking it, doesnt make sense to me.

Just like the NFL, 6 teams with the top two getting first round byes, first round games at one of the 4 bcs sites with the other two getting second round games(this schedule rotates each year), with championship rotating each year as well,
I really believe this system works with college football, the boys are not out of class anymore than they would be with regular bowl games and you are still finishing up by jan 7.

Im saying if they are guaranteed a spot in the playoff system..why would they go out and give 100% in their last game of the regular season, unless it would be against someone unranked? Its kind of like the NFL, when teams know they are going to be in the playoffs and have homefield advantage, they usually dont play their star players.

I can't see any college team losing "on purpose". For one thing, if you lose your last game then you risk dropping out of the top 8 teams and not even making the playoffs. Another is, you would want as high a seed as possible going into the playoffs and a loss would drop you to a lower seed or completely out of the picture. Any college coach that would lose his last game game on purpose is a complete fool and doesn't deserve to be coaching.
Also, this wouldn't be like in the pros where they know they are quaranteed a home game in the first round or through the entire playoffs and that's why they rest players in the last game of the regular season. Their position is set, unlike college where the seeding would more than likely occur after the last regular season game when the final AP and BCS polls come out.

i see, misunderstood. but i still highly doubt they'd throw their last game(s) to avoid injury unless it was against an opponent who wasnt very significant. like, OSU isnt gonna throw the UM game in light of avoiding injury and vise-versa.
