I will find stats on the 89 team for green. I like reminiscing back when I was in schoolYOU'RE TIGER BAIT wrote: ↑Thu Sep 28, 2017 9:30 am somebody tell ole Seabee that this was a cool topic.
ironton had a chance to win titles in 1979, 89, and 99.
they beat akron saint Vincent saint Mary's in 79 for the state title AA.
and beat Campbell memorial in 89 for the state title in D3
and were beaten by Sandusky perkins on an extremely controversial win. ironton clearly converted the 1st down on 4th and 1. and the ball spot didn't favor us. then Sandusky perkins threw a hail mary type pass into the end zone. the guy very apparently had stepped out of bounds, at least that's what I though I saw. and what people closer to the field said. or they'd have won the state title in 79,89,99.

Waverly had two brothers transfer from Green that played on our 1989 team...Matt and Chris Young. Matt ended up getting a track scholarship to be a long jumper at Kent State.
Re: 1989 Teams
If I remember correctly Waverly had a stud QB who went to OU.oldschoolqb13 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 28, 2017 12:05 pm Waverly had two brothers transfer from Green that played on our 1989 team...Matt and Chris Young. Matt ended up getting a track scholarship to be a long jumper at Kent State.

Re: 1989 Teams
Just talked to someone I work with who was on the 89 and 90 teams. They beat Paint Valley 28-7 first round in and lost to Burg 28-26 in 89. They beat Burg by 1 and Heath by 7, and lost to Versales in the state semi's. Versales would go on to win state.enigmaax wrote: ↑Thu Sep 28, 2017 7:30 amCouldn't find regional results, but according to the computer ratings, if Wheelersburg & Coal Grove each won their respective first round games in both years, they would've met in regional finals. The Oaf wrote: ↑Thu Sep 28, 2017 6:59 amI remember Grove played their second round game at Spartan to win the region after beating Burg at the Tank in 1990. I really believe Burg played Brookville in the opening round of the 89 playoffs. I don trembler them playing CG other than the regular season. We need a pirate fan to verify for sure.
1989: 1. Wheelersburg v. 4. Brookville; 2. Coal Grove v. 3. Paint Valley
1990: 1. Coal Grove v. 4. Heath; 2. Crooksville v. 3. Wheelersburg
Contemplating all life choices and loyalties…

my heavens it is a pure pleasure to read through such southern OH football history. I was 8 years old at the time and being the son of a coach I remember those times as a young boy. I am going to assume a lot of the participants in this convo are former players.....on a side note Wellston felt like they won the State Championship in 1989, because they beat Jackson that year.

Burg beat Warren JF Kennedy 14-7. Great game. Victory was sealed by a tough defensive stand near our goal line. I believe it was Rich Gill who came up with big stop on 4th and short.YOU'RE TIGER BAIT wrote: ↑Thu Sep 28, 2017 9:20 am 89 was a wonderful year. I WAS A SOPHOMORE ON THE 78 TEAM, BUT I HAD A PRETTY BAD KNEE INJURY AND GOT SURGERY DONE AND HEADED OUT TO THE VOCATIONAL SCHOOL TO LEARN A TRADE.
