In the article he discussed the benefits the kids playing in the MAC had. These included nearly all came from two parent households. His kids didn't have to worry about where their next meal came from. They had the money to attend camps and clinics. Their parents did not blindly support them, they pushed and encouraged and allowed the school and coaching staff to discipline them when needed. He always had parent volunteers and fundraising opportunities. Then he said, he knew that the kids from Trimble probably didnt have those same opportunities, he knew they were from a impoverished area, that some kids families struggled and that these struggles transferred over into the classroom and football field.

Recruiting is done by both private and public. Great programs attract talent, always has, always will. The big advantages lie in the fact that some school districts are not affected by outside influences like others are.

Football is a numbers game, MAC schools routinely dress 70 + kids in D IV to D VII, that should tell you something. The next man up for them isnt a sophomore, it sometimes is a senior or junior who would start for most other teams.
great point, also that second/third stringer at a MAC power, when going against 1st string, are going against one of the top units in the state for 4 days in a week at pratice.....You will get better going against top competition.

Bob Jacoby left DeSales to get into the public state teacher retirement system. When he went back to head coaching at St Charles, he made a pointed, public comment about being happy to be working with higher quality private school kids. And they were St Chucks nerds inept at the manly sports.
Well there you go. 100 kids at a private school is a different mix of kids than 100 kids at a public school. That's a fine starting point for a discussion.

Not all private schools recruit or do public schools with open enrollment. Having a larger municipality is one of the major influences to relocate parents for work. The evidence is clear that most major municipalities in areas such as Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo, and Columbus can compete in athletics year in and year out. I personally don't believe the system is fair and impartial across the board. Those of you that do are probably ignorant and naive. It just reminds me of the state public education system that's been ruled unconstitutional four times by the Ohio Supreme Court in that with those rulings nothing's changed. A neighboring school receives $400 a student and another receives $200 a student. An underlying stakeholder are tax payers influencing our general assembly on change. Even though people do their talking with their feet they also do their talking with the money to influence those in an a authoritarian position.

I would love to see the OHSSA try a pilot program with our lowest divisions especially with football to remove private schools from Division VII and move them up one.

But it sure is exciting to see public schools beat schools that we know recruit or use open enrollment unethically. Such as Trimble in football when they went to the state championship and Waterford girls basketball attending three straight state championship games winning one.

It just tells you that a high percentage of the student body goes out for football (and other sports and extracurricular s as well) in the MAC. There have indeed been situations were a young man may not get to start until his senior year and then go on to garner all league or better recognition, biding his time behind someone better. Coach Goodwin touched on this in an interview some years back, that local people should appreciate the amount of work these guys put in week in and week out, knowing well they were not likely to see playing time, without a grumble. He went on how rare a luxury that was, how in other parts of the state a coach might be getting an ear full from the kid, his parents, and threats of transferring to a school where he would be starting, instead quietly doing everything they could do to help improve the team, till their moment came.

And practicing for 15 weeks a typical year also adds a lot of experience.
