Monroe Central @ West Muskingum - Jay Circosta's last game

Post by Steely Dan »

OK, MC doesn't get a great deal of talk on this board, other than when Dspy has something to say or MC ends up playing a team further south in the area, e.g. Wheelersburg a few years back. Just throwing this out there, in case the true HS football fans did not know. Unless MC wins tomorrow night and the stars align, tomorrow's game with West Muskingum will be Jay's last game. Fifty (50) years of HS football coaching, all at one school. His record speaks for itself. I am honored, and privileged, to say I have known Jay and his wife Donna for all 50 of those years. They were both my teachers in Woodsfield, and made a lasting impression upon me as a student. I am hoping for a victory tomorrow, and if it is Jay's last game, he goes out a winner, with an unexpected winning season. The continuity, steadiness, and success of the program there are remarkable. Good luck tomorrow and thank you Jay for everything that you've done for Redskin/Seminole football since you started in 1967, when I was a little cuss.

Excellent post.

I did not know that tomorrow was Coach Circosta's last game. Virtually no reporting of it in this area (Wheeling-St. C) in the local papers. I've had the great privilege to talk to Coach several times. He's a great man - on and off the field - and his dedication to his family, schools, teams, and community has been second to none. If it's his last game, I hope it's a nice win, and that he has many, many, enjoyable years in retirement.

Yea I’ve also talked to him multiple times and he is and will always be one of my heroes. I’m sure a ton of people can say that.

Great program Coach Jay built in Monroe Co.
Surely He has, what? 300-350 wins or more. "Hall of Famer" for sure.

If MC beats West Muskingum tonight, it would be win #336 for Jay Circosta.

I coached against Jay for a number of years in the old PVL while HC at Rosecrans. Great guy. Excellent coach. And 50 years means he a glutton for punishment, lol. Used to see Jay after I got out of coaching as he brought his teams to YSU to watch some of his former players in college ball. I used to kid him that he'd die with his boots on.

However bad memories of the mud hole at Woodsfield. What a pig sty. We won a game down there for the PVL title one year where no one could run without slipping and falling down. Opted to spread them out and roll out throwing back across the grain on a deep post route to backside split end for a TD. Sure enough the DB fell down for an easy 7-0 win.

Wish a long retirement for Jay.

Yes, Paladin, back then, the field was not very good. I remember that as a kid. It is quite the opposite now, the boosters spent a crap ton of time and money to re-do the entire field, it is beautiful now and drains wonderfully. Yes I am biased, but I think it is one of the nicest grass fields in SEO. I don't see them putting in a turf field there in Woodsfield in my lifetime. :D

Coach Circosta closed out his 50 year HS coaching career with a 51-8 victory over West Muskingum tonight. I know that Coach really did not like scoring over 50 points against any opponent, but the chips fell where they did tonight to close things out. If memory serves me right, his first four years were as an assistant, and in 1971 he became head coach. The rest is history. Thanks Jay, Donna, and the rest of your family for being such an integral part of the Woodsfield community for all of these years. You are the best!

Football in Woodsfield has been the standard for consistency for the last 50 years. Coach Cut costs has helped make a lot of young men in that time. I hope he enjoys retirement.

50 seasons at one school. 50 seasons of preparation, conditioning, two-a-days, film watching, game planning, scheduling, pacing the sidelines. 50 years of grooming boys into young men. This man impacted many lives, as evidenced by the hundreds of former players that showed at the last home game for Coach’s last 100 yards. Many wins(336), perfect seasons, and playoff appearances. Many awards and accolades. More importantly, thousands of young men that left the program instilled with qualities such as hard work, dedication, respect, and discipline. Coach built a program in a tiny community. No big number of kids to pick from. Took what was there and and got the absolute best to come out of them. Built a football tradition that will live forever in a small town in the middle of nowhere. Thank you, Coach, for all you’ve done for the football program and young men in the community of Woodsfield. Best wishes for you and Mrs C. and may you enjoy many glorious years of retirement.
