I’ve seen 3 of their games Newark Licking Valley, Newark Catholic and Oak Hill. They are a pretty vanilla offense, but are efficient at what they do. Both the QB and RB #5 are quick and they also like to get #11 and #42 involved at times. The FB #40 is a hard runner and they like to feed him up he middle form time to time. I think they lack a lot in their pass coverage leaving the seams and flats open frequently.14svt wrote: ↑Mon Nov 06, 2017 10:08 pmWho did you see Johnstown play ?bassmaster-6604 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 06, 2017 9:06 pm I have seen Portsmouth West in person 2 times [ wheelersburg and Waverly] and Johstown 1 time and have watched both teams on hudl alot, they look alot alike !!!!! Both offenses run alot of the same looks, and about same size,Johnstown a little bigger,West a little quicker. Defensively west also a little quicker overall but Johnstown front 4 quicker than West front 4.Neither team has a great pass defense, this game will be won on which team can mix in some timely passes, with that being said I think West has a better passing game. I am taking West 24-14. I can see the west kicker being big in this game, that kid has a leg !!!
They key to stop the run on defense, but LV passed on them anytime they wanted. They do remind me of Burg a little on defense how they fly to the ball, but some defenders seem to have problems with missed tackles. I think they will have trouble with a decent passing game and are able to be ran on off tackle, they seem to plug the A & B gaps well. I do think that West will have success passing if the QB can make the correct reads and limit turnovers, the WR’s need to help him buy running crisp routes and get open when he’s in trouble. I also like Hurd's ability to run off tackle/outside with great success.
Defensively West will have to play fundamentally sound and have great discipline reading keys on the option and getting to the ball quickly. They seem to run the option well and it looked to me that you can shake up the QB when hit hard, I would hit him every chance you get. I also noticed that on their I formation runs between the tackles a quick backside DE can crash down the line and make the play about every time in the backfield, it seems to develop slowly.
Also, I bet in all 3 games combined I didn’t see but a handful of pass attempts and when they did the QB was looking to run quick. IMO the corners need to worry more about run support than pass coverage, so this means playing no more than 3-4 yards off the receiver and having great discipline as well as the Linebackers and Defensive ends. I would like the safety to play aggressively down hill with the little threat of the pass. Every roll out pass only has two receivers on routes, IMO no reason not to play down hill.
IMO West will be in a dog fight all night long, but what else do you expect at this point of the season...? It’s week #12!
I hope the West staff can get a good game plan together and the players play to their abilities and have great restraint/discipline and have 0 turnovers, If this happens I see them coming out victorious, but if they don’t it will be a long night.
