Why hasnt Shawnee State started football?
Re: Why hasnt Shawnee State started football?
Back in 1997, I was a sophomore baseball player at SSU and actually had a SSU football helmet on my head. Solid blue with a "S" on the side w/ bear claws coming from the end of the "S".
Yeah, back then it was tried. However (and I know this for an absolute fact) the women's programs really balked at the idea. For SSU to get football at that time, it would have lost a great deal of scholarships from other programs. At that time, the women's softball and basketball programs were top in the nation. That's basically what happened.
Also think of this. How much support could it get? Not much as is the case w/ other small college football programs. Picture this and what would you do, it's noon on Saturday and you can either drive down to Spartan Stadium to watch the SSU Bears take on the ODU Panthers or sat at home and watch the Ohio State Buckeyes. Im watching the Bucks.
I think students would support it, but I don't think there would be enough to keep it going.

The entire time I was reading this topic I was thinking the same thing.

Very interesting subject. I have also wondering why they haven't started a program. Is there a league for them to join if they start football? They could get some good quality SEO players to come play for them if they decide to have a team, that's for sure.

The league is already there. With Urbana, Malone, and others.

Malone, Ohio Dominican, Urbana, and Walsh all have football programs under the Mid-States Football Mid-east
Re: Why hasnt Shawnee State started football?
Knowing many people at the top of the chain at SSU don't look for it to happen soon. It would suck so much money out of the athletic dept. (scholarships, travel, other costs) that it doesn't make sense. In a day where almost every program is losing money as it is, SSU isn't looking to dig the hole deeper. Everyone says theyd go and love it, but with high school on friday night and then OSU/WVU/Marshall/OU and others playing on Saturday would you really go to SSU? I think I would take the Buckeyes over the Bears.

I think most people would take the Buckeyes over the Bears. But, I personally don't care if they get football or not, I just want something to happen that will save Spartan Stadium.

For the people who live close to SSU it would be a good thing.
With gas prices and all I think they would draw a good local crowed.

There we go. Sounds like an idea to me.

Plus..... SSU has had very good teams in the past with other sports. Take womens basketball for example. Top 10 team every year and they can't get many people there. No one in the local community supports Shawnee State as it is now. They are too busy supporting their high schools which is fine and great but who is going to support football? You? Nope you'll be wrapped up in HS football when this is going on

Why does this thread have 34 responses?
It costs money to run a football program, tons more money than a
womens basketball and softball team.
Apparently sonme small colleges still believe in a quality of education priciple,
and think that money that could be sent to football should go to
making America's young adults able to succeed in the world today.
No amount of "local College" football could save the stadium in Portsmouth.

This thread is a joke.
FB is expensive and starting from scratch would be extremely difficult. Too much cost for no or little revenue.
Local players ?? The coaches woudl recruit ELSEWHERE for players, regardless of the level the FB team would play at. Ohio ( and other states) produce much better players than SEO.
The stadium?? A relic.
