No brainer...Burg wins because of defense. Look at all those points given up by the Trojans. Burg would light that scoreboard up while slowing them down. Trojans P/F 463. Avg. 35.6 ppg. Trojans P/A 201. Avg. 15.4 ppg. Burg P/F 594. Avg. 39.6 ppg. Burg P/A 128. Avg. 8.5 ppg. Burg is better all around than the 01 Trojans. Defense darn near twice as good. If we could put these 2 against each other, I see Burg running away with it

I was waiting on someone from p-town to chime in. Personally I think that would be a HELL of a game

Portsmouth by a bunch! Taking nothing away from this years Burg squad as they were fabulous and won the hardware! I've watched a lot of high school football and the 2000 and 2001 Trojans are the best I've seen around these parts and it's not really close. I would put the 1979 Ironton fighting tiger squad at the top. Just my opinion.

Saw that Portsmouth team up close a couple times and they were impressive. West, Waverly, Newark Licking Valley, and Ironton were all really good teams. New Lexington with Drew Cannon was good too. Wheelersburg didn't have a great record but with Burleson at quarterback they played Portsmouth and West tough.

Wheelersburg had a great defense, but they never saw 2 backs like Portsmouth had.

Dumbest thread ever.

You’re comparing an undefeated state champion to a team who didn’t win state?
Woulda, coulda, shoulda!
Burg wins easily

The 79 Ironton team?? Burg beat them like a drum in a scrimmage plus that year they played a common opponent Washington Court House. Ironton tied them 6-6 and Burg beat the 42 or 47-8.

Burg should have made the playoffs that year but I believe they only took 8 teams in each class which was AAA, AA and A. Burg was double A then.

Plus, I think it was the 2000 Trojan team that was the better of the two.

Hard to say who would have won but I do know Ptown was a running team and this years Burg team was pretty tough against the run.

You can hypothetical all you want for fun. But to pick one team over the other based on what they did that season, does not make for good comparison. That is why they play the game. The St. V team we beat in '79 beat Class AAA Cleveland St. Ignatius on their home field earlier that season. Cleveland's coach declared St. V the Class AA State Champs in his post game comments. Guess we never should have played the game and just let St. V have the title.

BS. You count a scrimmage win over Ironton as proof the Burg would have beat us during the season. Ironton didn't play scrimmages to win, they played them to get a look at all the players to see what they were capable of. Burg acted like it was the super bowl because they knew they would never beat Ironton in a regular game back then. As far as the Ct. House game, we had key injuries on offense and defense that game. Otherwise we would have beat them handily. Did Burg win a title that year that I am not aware of?

By the way, only region champs made the playoffs in 1979. 4 teams per class.

Those Portsmouth teams were beat by Van Wert and Licking Valley. Burg is better than those teams. If there's one thing that Burg does well, it's shut down the running game. Just ask Eastwood.

Lol. 2001 team was decent but nowhere near 2000 team and saying Portsmouth by a bunch is dumb too. Burg won their championship.

We heard the same old song and dance of “Burg has never seen backs like ours” 3 weeks in a row. Ask all 3 how well they fared. Trojans had no defense. Burg would score at will while shutting those backs down. I did the numbers on my first reply. Burg is better all the way around

Numbers compared to what? Portsmouth's regular season schedule that year was much tougher than what Wheelersburg played this year. West, Waverly, and Ironton that year were loaded. The playoff teams were tough too

Lol will it ever end?? Couldn’t find anyone to beat Burg this season so now we’re looking elsewhere??? Getting ridiculous. Stupid post that should of stayed on nosebook. There’s no way to compare these teams, different eras. It’s all the same arguments all the time. “ Burg couldn’t stop this run game”, “ kids were tougher back in the day”, blah, blah, blah... well they did stop the run all year long and had players who played with injuries that would of had kids standing on the sidelines back in the day.

I disagree, Athens was a great team, they maybe would of won but no way I see them smashing this Burg team with that defense they had.

I looked on calpreps, only reasonable way we have of judging other than opinions and team loyalties lol. Preps had it at 2014 Athens 35 and 2017 Burg 34. No idea exactly how accurate this projection would actually be but what else is there?
