You are correct. He was a great man, a great coach, and a great leader of PSU.
But even he acknowledged that he should have did more and handled things differently!

one more time, i know he acknowledged that he should have done more. what else was he supposed to say? he done got fired and did'nt want everyone thinking bad stuff about him. he did what he was supposed to do, he turned it over to the higher up's. he also said at his bedside he did'nt no wich way to go. he never delt with something like this. i respect everyones opinion on the matter but in my book an old school 80 plus year old man did what he thought was best. but it never got taken care of. it's a mess and a shame.
Re: Joe Paterno Dead at 85
If someone walks into your office and says someone has been shot do you run and tell your boss or call the police? Technically he did the right thing, from an ethical standpoint he did not. If this was your son or grandchild would you be ok with the effort of Joe Pa? If you say yes you should be punched in the nuts.

Re: Joe Paterno Dead at 85
when the cops got to my office it wouldnt matter who called the cops, the cops would ask who seen the shooting when they got there wich would be the guy that came into my office. nothing to do with me. i would be the middle man that had no idea what happened. and to my son and grandson standpoint if joe did what he thought was best and wasnt around when it happened it's not his fault. they would have to lock me up from getting to sandusky. and thats real smart big shot. i need punched in the nuts. u need to watch ur mouth peake!

Re: Joe Paterno Dead at 85
It's not the actions of Joe, when McQweery told him. Joe did what he was "supposed" to do.
It's the fact that BOYS WERE RAPED AFTER THIS INCEDENT, and that is directly attributed to the inaction of the authorities and PENN ST. JOE IS AND WAS PENN STATE!
After the incident that the GA reported to Joe and Joe reported to his AD, Joe did nothing once it became clear that the people above him had dropped the ball. Because nothing was done, Sandusky was allowed to RAPE AND SODOMIZE little boys.
Joe did the minimum required, and then failed to big the man that he preached to his players that they should be. Doing the right thing and pressing the issue when nobody else would. That was the program he ran, it was the ethics he instilled for 60+ years, yet when the innocence of someone's grandchild was on the line, he chose to be part of the crowd that allowed it at PSU, instead of the voice of honor and integrity!

Re: Joe Paterno Dead at 85
I don't think he could have done much more then what he did, they already dropped charges once so no use going to the police and he might have come up missing like that DA if he did, so its easy for people to sit back and say "oh he should have done this or he should have done that" blah blah blah, until your in that situation you don't know what you would do,but if I were Joe I would have done my best to keep Sandusky off campus all them years after Sandusky retired even though it was mostly admin helping him stay around
Re: Joe Paterno Dead at 85
From an ethical standpoint he took a deontological stance and followed protocol and did nothing more.
Had he taken a teleological stance and actually thought about what was best for all involved he would have done it differently.
If he would have take an existential stance he would have made a decision that was authentic and made a decision based on the free will.
He chose to do the minimum. You want to preach ethical behavior and being moral as part of your program, then you do the minimum, then I think you are trash, PERIOD. As a public school employee if you don't report a similar situation to the authorities and CPS, not just your boss, you can be held responsible for adding. Is Joe Pa not an educator? as a coach you are expected to uphold the mission statement of your institution, and I am pretty sure that the welfare of your student-athletes and children for that matter trump not at minimum advising your GA to go to the authorities.

Then rewarding the GA with a full assistant position and director of east coast recruiting status within the program, with no experience other than his GA status.

Joe Paterno is what you call a greek tragic hero. He lived by a code of standards which he followed and in which he instilled in hundreds if not thousands of young people. In the end his downfall was tragic like Achilles or Hector or modern day like Patton. Right now the wounds are still fresh, but in time they will heal and he will be remembered by most for the great things he done throughout his life with this incident only a footnote as a reminder of how 1 supposedly wrong move can tear down everything you have ever built. Time will be kind to Joe Pa.

You are trying to compare a sport's figure to a war hero!!
Joe the Complicit couldn't carry the jock strap of Patton! I hope the SOB is burning in hell for what HE ALLOWED TO OCCUR after knowing SANDUSKY was a child RAPIST!!
Paterno is/was a COWARD, NOT a hero!!!

Re: Joe Paterno Dead at 85
The real question to me is this: Do you define his actions by the event that brought him down, by all the good he did in 60 years and change at Penn State, or are they a package deal? A career that long is impressive, but the one event was horrendous enough.
How can you weigh the two arguments?
