School District Oddities and Trivia

There is only 1 school district in the state that is bigger than Northwest. There is 616 square miles is Scioto county and Northwest and Portsmouth West takes up almost 300 square miles of that.

Northwest covers 184 square miles

Just within the SEO Preps area, the following schools cover more:
Logan Elm 198
Meigs 199
Westfall 200
Federal Hocking 207
Tri Valley 230
Madison Plains 248
Morgan 387
Miami Trace 401

There are also at least a handful more across the state that are bigger. Northwest is huge though.

Vinton County covers 415.

Not greatly sure. My grandfather was quite the athlete and grew up in Carbon Hill area...not even sure what school he attended

Carbon Hill might have had their own high school. Thought I heard they were a member of the old county league.

You are correct Carbon Hill did have a High School . Was part of the old County League . They played their Tourney games on the stage at the old LHS . Back in the DAY all the villages and towns had their own High School with some with a class ( Boys and Girl) totaling 15 OR LESS . Good old Days !

I believe but Morgan and Harrison Counties are also single HS counties.

As for the Hocking County League, I believe the count is:

Carbon Hill Bulldogs
Haydenville Jayhawks (?)
Gibisonville Tigers
Ilesboro
Laurelville Wildcats
Murray City Miners
Rockbridge Red Raiders
South Bloomingville Dodgers
Union Furnace (Starr-Washington) Warriors


Ilesboro and Haydenville were the first to close. Laurelville and Union Furnace were the last to avoid consolidation.

A few of the schools above didn't completely close right off. After the 8th grade some started going to Logan. Rockbridge and Gibisonville and maybe South Bloomingville had 1 thur 8 back in the late sixties.

Back when Union Furnace and Laurelville played each other they had some great games. Both of my older sisters went with boys from Union Furnace, and later married. Was a lot of bitter feelings between the two schools. Some games it seemed like the whole HVSD was there to keep things under control.

Exactly. Single HS and single school district for the entire county. Hocking and Morgan have multiple school districts that encompass their county lines.

Wouldn't shock me one bit if that was with every county. If your district is close to the county line it is a good chance both counties could draw from either. NY draws from Hocking. I know a guy that lives in Perry county and the road he lives on comes out in Hocking so they go to Logan.

The Portsmouth City School District encompasses about 7 miles in length, and has 3 high schools, which is extremely rare in Ohio for a city of 20,000. Portsmouth HS, Portsmouth Notre Dame, and Portsmouth East (Sciotoville) are all within the city limits. I wonder if there is another city in Ohio with the population of Portsmouth that has 3 high schools.

Portsmouth Clay is not within the Portsmouth City limits, the school is and has been clearly outside the district of Portsmouth City. Clay is no more Portsmouth than Portsmouth West is.

I don't think he said anything about Clay.

There are parts of the Valley school district that have Lucasville addresses that are actually in Pike County.

Some of those kids in Pike county with Lucasville addresses are in Eastern school district, and I would imagine Piketon school district as well
