Hannan(WV) to take field this season with female head coach

When the Hannan Wildcats take the field Aug. 24 at Tug Valley, they likely will make history as possibly the first high school football squad in West Virginia with a female head coach.

Kellie Thomas has been head coach of girls basketball and volleyball, as well as an assistant coach with track and field, and now she’s adding football coach to her resume. She has also been a physical education teacher and athletic trainer at times during her 20 years in the Mason County School District.

A graduate of Point Pleasant High School and Marshall University, Thomas is well versed in championship football, having been an athletic trainer with Marshall’s 1992 NCAA Division I-AA national title-winning team.

“It’s a real honor to be hired as the new football coach at Hannan,” Thomas said. “I appreciate the opportunity that I have been given. I’ve been around the game for many, many years. I was actually on the Marshall sidelines when we won the national title in 1992 and I grew up in a family with three older brothers that all played football at Point Pleasant.”

Interesting. After Googling the subject, I had no idea there have already been at least 7 or 8 female head coaches in high school football across the country, going back at least to 2010 and probably earlier.

Yea well Pat was good, but don't forget Goldy Hawn actually coached a high school boys team back in the 80's. So it can be done.
