D2 State Semi Final Sheridan(22-5) vs South (27-1)
Thornville Sheridan (22-5) vs. No. 2 Columbus South (27-1), Thursday, 6 p.m
Thoughts?
Thornville Sheridan (22-5)
The Generals are riding a wave of school-wide pride into the final. The girls basketball program was in the D-II state semifinals last week and the football team made the D-III regional finals in the fall. This is the boys basketball program’s first state tournament appearance. Sheridan, which won its first district title since 2000 this season, rallied from a 10-point fourth quarter deficit with 4:53 remaining to win last week’s regional final over New Philadelphia 55-53 in overtime. Senior Ethan Heller (Southeast District POY) is the school’s all-time leading scorer and leads the team in scoring (22.3 points). Also averages 4.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists. Heller was the 2018 D-III OPSWA All-Ohio Football State Offensive POY (quarterback). He has signed with Concord University for basketball. Senior Grant Heileman, 6-7, controls the post (12.5 points/6.0 rebounds), while senior Costa Coconis, junior Luken Hill and sophomore Landen Russell round out the starting five. Sophomores Adam Malone and Nate Johnson are key contributors off the bench. This is the second state appearance for head coach Doug Fisher, who led the Sheridan girls to the state tournament in 2004. He is the only Muskingum Valley League coach to lead a boys and girls team to Columbus and is a 1985 Sheridan graduate. Sheridan has tied the school record for most wins in a season.
Columbus South (27-1)
The Bulldogs, who have won three district titles in five years and set a record for wins this season, are making their first appearance at the state tournament since finishing runner-up in Class AAA in 1986. South has a storied hoops history that includes a 1965 state title (Class AA) and a 1954 runner-up (Class A). The Bulldogs were state semifinalists in 1973, 1927 and 1923. Head coach Ramon Spears is in his ninth season at the school. The Bulldogs were 1-19 in his first season (2010-2011). In mid-February the Bulldogs beat Northland (68-51) to claim their second Columbus City League title in three years. Senior guard Treohn Watkins (13.7 points) leads an extremely balanced attack that features six players that average between 6.2-13 points. Watkins, junior Taquan Simington (13.1 points), junior Marcus Johnson (10.9 points), junior Trevell Adams (10.5 points) and senior Alvin Byrd (8.4 points) all earned All-Central District honors.

I would prefer Sheridan but the Columbus city league champ "DAWGS" from the old south side prevail in this one.
Tidbits:
* A couple notable athletes from South that the old timers might remember that graduated from South are Frank Howard who was all-american in both basketball/football @ OSU in late 50's and played with the Dodgers and Senators in MLB in the late 50's to early 70's and Greg Bell who played rb for Notre Dame and in the NFL in the 80's. Also, the original "Donato's Pizza" that started the franchise in 1963 is still in operation about 5 blocks up the street from the school onThurman Avenue *

Athens best team ever lost to South in the D1 regionals 50-48. Both teams were loaded with D1 athletes. South went on to beat St Xavier in the D1 state finals

That was back when there were only 2 divisions (AA, A) and 2 refs assigned to each game and both refs in the South-St. X "AA" big school championship game were from SEO. (Dick Hyland-South Webster, Ken Thompson- Waverly). Also that same year in Athens county , Albany (now Alexander) went to State finals in "A" and lost in the semi's by 9 to the eventual champs. Bill Whaley was the coach and both Jerry Turner and Lloyd Colburn made the all-tourney team.Raider6309 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2019 12:19 pm Athens best team ever lost to South in the D1 regionals 50-48. Pretty dumb Athens didn’t give the job to Bill Whaley. An Athens alumni that was the best player on Ohio University with two NCAA births. The Athens area always has a ridiculous amount of D1 athletes and he would have been able to recruit them all in at Athens. He recruited well at Albany

Re: D2 State Semi Final Sheridan(22-5) vs South (27-1)
This is a matchup that I'm happy for both teams.......Sheridan's first trip to the state ever, and South rising up from being a doormat for decades in the City League. The City League seems to produce dynasties within itself, as in the early 2000's it was Brookhaven dominating the CL, winning a state title in 2002, then Northland became prominent with several CL titles, a state title in 2009, with a state runnerup in 2013, then South has become the new powerhouse in the CL, culminating with a 2019 state appearance. Great to see the City League still represented in the state.
Sheridan will try to be the first SE district school since Chillicothe in 2008 to win a D2 state title. The Cavaliers beat Toledo Libbey with OSU star William Buford 70-69 in OT on Ray Chambers layup at the buzzer. Portsmouth and Chillicothe are the only SE district schools to have captured the D2 state title, with the Trojans winning the very first D2 title in 1988. Sheridan is the first SE D2 team to make the state since Warren won the 2013 Athens regional.
Favoring South in this win, with the competition that they have played and going through a tougher regional.

But Sheridan is closer to Zanesville and John Glenn. The MVL has been the dominant league in our area for football and basketballtrojandave wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2019 1:52 pm This is a matchup that I'm happy for both teams.......Sheridan's first trip to the state ever, and South rising up from being a doormat for decades in the City League. The big kid for Sheridan will be the X factor. South struggled with a decent Bishop Watterson team. South struggled with their size
Re: D2 State Semi Final Sheridan(22-5) vs South (27-1)
Sheridan IS playing their BEST basketball of the season RIGHT NOW ! - outstanding defense ... the Big 3 in the paint have stepped up since the last week of the season - Russell/Heileman/Luken Hill have been THE best trio of interior players I have seen all year - on the defensive boards/ the offensive end - love their game right now ... add to the mix THE heart & soul of that TEAM - Ethan Heller - he has been outstanding even with the D that New Philly played on him throughout that game EH WAS the MAN when it was crunch time ... I know nothing about South - they are in the final 4 THEY are good obviously BUT I LIKE the way Sheridan is playing right now ... as I've said they ARE a complete TEAM ... ME being the TEAM kind of guy I am - I HAVE TO TAKE THE GENERALS - fundamentals/size/defense/ inside strength with Heileman/Russell/L. Hill - I'm taking Sheridan BECAUSE of the way these 3 are playing AND Ethan Heller ... we'll see but I'm not going against THE TEAM from SE Ohio ... I wish the Generals nothing but the best Thursday evening ...
Re: D2 State Semi Final Sheridan(22-5) vs South (27-1)
