Athens ate up several minutes from 10:00+ down to 5:31 when they turned the ball over on downs in Waverly territory. HUGE HUGE STOP BY THE TIGERS.

Shoemaker with some great runs to keep. The drive going and Tigers finally start taking knees with at first down at the 19 with 1:32 to play.


Waverly with some great halftime adjustments on defense to shut out the Bulldogs in the 2nd half.
A HUGE HUGE SHOUTOUT to the young Tiger offensive line - a freshman and 2 sophomores with their first H.S. Starts and man did they do an awesome job protecting Shanks and giving Shoemaker room to run to the tune of 200+ yards.
Great game from Diener as well - kid has a leg.
What can anyone say about Payton Shoemaker other than he is absolutely THE MAN!

What is going on with Wolf and Swepston. The defense sure could have used both of them.

Wolf still not completely back. It has always been projected week 3. Not sure about Swepston. Yes those two were deeply missed.
But, young guys stepped up and with the second half defensive adjustment and gut check the Tigers wore them down.

Shoemaker: 200+ rushing and they quit kicking to him on KOs. Plus he played safety most of the game.
Diener: By the time he had the one KO that didn't carry into the EZ, Athens had quit trying to field the kicks.
Athens offense: Very creative and fun to watch, scary to defend.
Waverly defense: Young and inexperienced, but made the plays when they had to.
Cramps: Athens had them, Waverly didn't. Conditioning?

Great win for the Tigers. Time to prepare for the Pioneers.

Two evenly matched teams. Waverly was the better conditioned team. 2/3 of Athens team was gassed, cramping, or both by middle of 3rd quarter. Coach had to burn his timeouts because they were gassed. Exciting game to start the season.
