Shawnee State Women #3 seed at National Tournament

Eighth ranked Shawnee State was selected as a number three seed Wednesday afternoon and will face Haskell Indian Nations University in the NAIA II Women's National Basketball Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa starting next Wednesday at 8:30 CT.

The Bears will be making their fifteenth all-time appearance and third straight at the National Tournament, where they own a record of 18-13 including the 1999 National Championship, the only title in school history in any sport. They were selected to the tournament by gaining an at-large bid.

Opposing the Bears will be Haskell Indian Nations University from Lawrence, Kansas. A member of the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference, they earned their way into the tournament with an at-large bid. This is their first appearance at the National Tournament.

Last year the Bears were featured as a one-seed and defeated Florida Memorial in the first round before being upset by Hastings (Neb.), a five seed, in the second round. Hastings went on to play in the National Championship Game where they lost to Morningside College (IA).

Shawnee State finished in second place in the American Mideast Conference this season after posting a 25-6 record. They lost to Walsh 65-64 in the AMC semi-finals on February 27.

Shawnee State will be making their final appearance in the Division II tournament before they move to NAIA Division I next season as a member of the Mid-South Conference.

Shawnee Lady Bears won today 79-40 over Haskel Indian Nation University.

Aquinas (Mich.) defeated Saint Francis (Ind.) 67-65 in overtime in the tournament's second game. SSU will face the seventh-seeded Saints instead of the second-seeded Lady Cougars in Friday's second round.

SSU's road just got a little easier as the #1 team in the nation coming into the tourny, Hastings College, was upset by Grand View College 69-61!
