Norm Persin to retire after this season

2006-07 was 14-11 with a District Championship, first in Jackson County History. Finished the regular season 10-10 and tournament went like this:
Vs. Wellston at Athens High, 40-20
Vs. Alexander at Athens High, 53-50 (Sectional Championship)
Vs. South Point, Convocation Center, 62-56 (OT)
Vs. Fairland, Convocation Center, 56-48 (District Championship)
Vs. Wheelersburg, Regional Semifinals, 78-44.

As for surprising I’d have to say the 07 team. They were the 7 seed and won a district title. They were obviously a very talented class with what happened the next 3 years but I didn’t see the turnaround happening so soon.
And Im not sure about overachieving because every team that I had felt wasn’t that talented always developed into having some great upperclassmen years & players.

I agree with the 07 team being the most surprising. The run they went on was pretty sweet. I would have to go with the 13 team as most overachieving. They didn’t look like much but they could play.

Watched em win a few in Athens, can't remember wear, but reading other posts has to be the '13 squad. They were ranked high, thinkin maybe 2 in state? But I couldn't believe the coaching job that Norm did with those kids! Like all of his teams they were disciplined, hard nosed, played d, and ran their sets. And absolutely no disrespect to the players! But they had one kid that wouldn't shoot it if he were the last kid on the court. But yet they kept advancing... think they woulda won 2-0 if they could have that year! Lol Unbelievable coaching job..

There have been a lot of great athlete's that came out of Jackson County, that's why I said that it could be debated, and probably never agreed on. I probably should have said that I thought that he was the best basketball player to come out of Jackson County.

Would like to give a shout out to oneoak, a really big fan and supporter of both the Oak Hill boys team and the Lady Oaks as well. I was just told that he had been having some health problems, and even though he hasn't been posting, I'm sure that he has as much as possible been trying to keep up with SEOP. He's really a good guy, and I know that he really enjoys SEOP. I hope that you are feeling and doing better from here on out.

No argument from me on Jamie Lewis, she was most certainly one of a kind. If I'm not mistaken she not only was selected as a Captain at OSU her freshman year, but all 4 years as well. There have been some outstanding athletes from all 3 of the Jackson County schools, that's why I think this could be debated for however long, and would never be agreed on by everyone. A name that just came to mind was Jeff Mongomery from Wellston, who had an outstanding career in MLB. Sometimes it might be a little hard to really be objective when its someone that we may know a little bit better, or have mayby heard a lot more about. There is no doubt at all that we could probably name 50 people or even more, but I also think that if we asked enough people, and went back far enough, that there would probably be 25 or more different names added to that list.

Not taking anything away from the kid, but Rick Edwards was Norms best player and it isn't close. Rick was on the Chesapeake 92-93 team. 6'8, center who went onto play at Richmond University. Rick's claim to fame is he held Tim Duncan to single digit scoring. I also believe he played over sea's. There is a very long list of very good players from Chesapeake that were as good if not better: Rick Edwards (Richmond), Joey Thacker (Liberty), Anthony Delimpo (Centerville), etc
