Just go to a game that you have no biased towards either team. You will find out quick that fans are stupid

My first thought is this....if youre complaining about the officials, go get your license and suit up. Shortage problem solved.

Secondly, people can say "its the same as the 80s and 90s" and I disagree. Did we have rowdy parents and yelling back then? Yes, I yelled at the refs as a student but it wasnt ever personal or demeaning like it is now. Things like facebook have made everyone feel like they have a right to comment, and that their opinion is right and they will argue everything they see. I believe it flows over to sports as well. These parents yell everytime their kid gets touched, or their kid gets a call on them...its ridiculous. If your kid, or your teams player, goes a whole game...okay lets say a half...without getting fouled and not getting a call, or they dont get a foul on them----they arent playing hard enough.

Leave the officials alone! Pro officials miss calls...and now we have 32 stoppages a game for reply which sucks!

and while im on my soapbox...before you make an ass out of yourself and yell profanities across the gym remember there are kids watching you...maybe even your own!

I played in a high school game in the 90’s where a fan threw a bag of popcorn at an official and had to be dragged out by police. Went to girls games where parents were escorted by police and also had Instances where police had to escort the refs to their car for fear of being attacked.

You do have a point with social media. That definitely brings a more personal aspect into it. In the 90’s if a referee had a bad game or officiated a game with a rough crowd it was over usually when they got home. Now they are on social media and the criticism just doesn’t stop. I could see where this would get to the point of not being worth it for these folks. But social media has that affect on a lot aspects of life and professions. Not really sure what the answer is other than for people to have a little sense and leave the poor refs alone when they’re done with the game.

Don't make horrendous calls and no one will scream at you. But I scream, mom's scream, we all scream for ice cream and bad calls against our teams.

Now what I don't love are the fans that don't understand rules or make up their own rules then try and let us know. Or the really bellingerite ones that sit in the front row and put their feet out (on purpose I might add) or stand up and wave their arms or point at you as you run by. Those type of fans need to go! But stay passionate and keep the energy level up. Makes for a very exciting game.!

Not a bad attitude to have. But you can't expect the fans to know all the rules. He11 I know a lot of officials who don't know some of the rules and make them up as they go.

I feel the best are the ones that Can RUN and get in position (not being lazy) and actually have a feel for the game. Sometimes knowing everything BY the BOOK can get an official in trouble more so then having a good feel about the game and calling what actually happens instead of making up a rule for what he believed to have happened. My theory has always been the same —- raise the pay to $100 per official per game and see if that keeps good ones around.

Officials have to drive to the game (sometimes a substantial drive), spend 4-5 hours away from home, deal with fans yelling at them, deal with some coaches berating them etc.... Really, it’s a tough job.

Are there some bad ones? Oh absolutely. Are there some whose ego is entirely too big? Absolutely. But again, who wants to add all the stress to their life when there’s plenty of other jobs paying $65 for 5 hours that are way less stressful.

I think the State has an easy fix for 80 percent of the problems that we face today in High School basketball.

1. If a fan gets removed by the Admin/Ref/Cops they should be given $100 fine. This would start showing people that they must be accountable for actions. This money could be used for Charity or go back to the schools for educational funding etc.....

Fans are much worse now!! We have reports of fans walking on the court, going after officials after games, waiting in parking lots.... Officials do it for the kids and love of the game. Its not the money or whatever anyone else thinks. It's because they love working with the kids and spending time and giving back.
Most Refs would agree you are gone about 4 hours per night including your drive time and game time. 70 for Var. game....10 for gas....so 60 bucks...So most are doing this for 15.00 per hour and getting treated like dogs.

That is a legal issue, so if by State you mean the OHIO State Legislature, many would agree. Some local communities already have this as a local ordinance and there is a HUGE difference in how their fans act.

I've always like it too when officials will discuss certain things with the coaches. And to that point, the coaches should be considerate enough to not publicly shame the official by screaming at them. The best crews i've seen are the ones that will come to a coach and explain a call (or non call), and even admit if they've missed one. Coaches know the officials are human but just having those simple conversations justifies it even more.

Officials will talk to coaches if coaches want to talk to them. If a coaches idea of communication or talking is by raising their voice, then like in any relationship, the conversation will be a short one.

People have always yelled at officials, probably always will, however, what is being yelled has become more personal, at time personally threatening and vulgar.

Schools don’t have extra funds, refs don’t make enough, shortage of refs, fans will complain regardless. Honestly, I’ve never left a junior high game with two refs having wished there were a third ref. What year did they go to a 3 man crew?
