Norm Persin to retire after this season

Which team or teams do you think were the most surprising or over achieving of all these teams? Norm always does more with less. Just curious of your thoughts as well as others?3sUp wrote: ↑Wed Jan 15, 2020 10:33 pm 2006-07 14-11 (District Champs)

If records are correct OH has been 251-75 (.70 winning pct.) No losing seasons. 5 district titles and 1 runner-up in 13 1/2ish seasons. Amazing stuff for where they were even just right before Norm.
Re: Norm Persin to retire after this season
As for surprising I’d have to say the 07 team. They were the 7 seed and won a district title. They were obviously a very talented class with what happened the next 3 years but I didn’t see the turnaround happening so soon.SOC94 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2020 8:53 amWhich team or teams do you think were the most surprising or over achieving of all these teams? And Im not sure about overachieving because every team that I had felt wasn’t that talented always developed into having some great upperclassmen years & players.
Re: Norm Persin to retire after this season
I’d love if someone could find his Chesapeake record. I’m positive his win/loss record was insane
Re: Norm Persin to retire after this season
I agree with the 07 team being the most surprising. The run they went on was pretty sweet. I would have to go with the 13 team as most overachieving. They didn’t look like much but they could play.3sUp wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2020 3:21 pmAs for surprising I’d have to say the 07 team. They were the 7 seed and won a district title. Re: Norm Persin to retire after this season
Watched em win a few in Athens, can't remember wear, but reading other posts has to be the '13 squad. They were ranked high, thinkin maybe 2 in state? But I couldn't believe the coaching job that Norm did with those kids! Like all of his teams they were disciplined, hard nosed, played d, and ran their sets. And absolutely no disrespect to the players! But they had one kid that wouldn't shoot it if he were the last kid on the court. But yet they kept advancing... think they woulda won 2-0 if they could have that year! Lol Unbelievable coaching job..

Re: Norm Persin to retire after this season
His most overachieving season was his first in 2006-07. At one point, that team was 7-9. 7-2 down the stretch. I know that the 2008-09 season that Oak Hill won the State Championship with an amazing run and maybe the best athlete in Jackson County history (Ondera) but he had some unbelievable teams at Chesapeake that just couldn’t get over the hump. PJ Rase and that Peake team losing to Bellaire with Nate Davis and Aginew, Sam Gue, Anthony Delimpo, etc. Norm Persin has by far been the standard for 40 years in SE Ohio.

Re: Norm Persin to retire after this season
Being that we are on a Basketball topic, I understand that this could be debated and never really settled, but I also think that he ( Kyle Ondera ) was the best athlete to ever come out of Jackson County. I would also bet that if someone were to ask Norm who was the best kid that ever played for him, he would probably never give you an answer, but he would tell you that Ondera was right at the top.Ironman92 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2020 9:00 amsettledJason Vorhees wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2020 7:51 am His most overachieving season was his first in 2006-07. I’m not trying to take anything away. State Champ, Final 4 MVP...kid was beyond special. I really like the family but just never thought of him as greatest athlete to ever come out of the county.VetteMan wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2020 2:23 pmBeing that we are on a Basketball topic, I understand that this could be debated and never really settled, but I also think that he ( Kyle Ondera ) was the best athlete to ever come out of Jackson County. There have been a lot of great athlete's that came out of Jackson County, that's why I said that it could be debated, and probably never agreed on. I probably should have said that I thought that he was the best basketball player to come out of Jackson County.Ironman92 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2020 2:54 pmI’m not trying to take anything away. Would like to give a shout out to oneoak, a really big fan and supporter of both the Oak Hill boys team and the Lady Oaks as well. I was just told that he had been having some health problems, and even though he hasn't been posting, I'm sure that he has as much as possible been trying to keep up with SEOP. He's really a good guy, and I know that he really enjoys SEOP. I hope that you are feeling and doing better from here on out.

Re: Norm Persin to retire after this season
I’d say overall, the five best athletes to come from Jackson County are:
Kyle Ondera
Andy Orendor (SP)
Jared Humphreys
Brad Young
Ed Spriggs
Kyle Ondera
Andy Orendor (SP)
Jared Humphreys
Brad Young
Ed Spriggs

He and Barrick pacing the side lines each looking like they had just sucked on a lemon. Two good HS coaches that hated to lose to the other one.

Wouldnt Jamie Lewis from Oak Hill have to be on this list? She dominated Ohio State women's basketball as well.Ironman92 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2020 10:14 amWhile I don’t understand your reasoning it would be an interesting topic.Jason Vorhees wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2020 10:06 am I’d say overall, the five best athletes to come from Jackson County are:

Re: Norm Persin to retire after this season
No argument from me on Jamie Lewis, she was most certainly one of a kind. If I'm not mistaken she not only was selected as a Captain at OSU her freshman year, but all 4 years as well. There have been some outstanding athletes from all 3 of the Jackson County schools, that's why I think this could be debated for however long, and would never be agreed on by everyone. A name that just came to mind was Jeff Mongomery from Wellston, who had an outstanding career in MLB. Sometimes it might be a little hard to really be objective when its someone that we may know a little bit better, or have mayby heard a lot more about. There is no doubt at all that we could probably name 50 people or even more, but I also think that if we asked enough people, and went back far enough, that there would probably be 25 or more different names added to that list.BBallCoach23 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2020 12:24 amWouldnt Jamie Lewis from Oak Hill have to be on this list? Re: Norm Persin to retire after this season
Not taking anything away from the kid, but Rick Edwards was Norms best player and it isn't close. Rick was on the Chesapeake 92-93 team. 6'8, center who went onto play at Richmond University. Rick's claim to fame is he held Tim Duncan to single digit scoring. I also believe he played over sea's. There is a very long list of very good players from Chesapeake that were as good if not better: Rick Edwards (Richmond), Joey Thacker (Liberty), Anthony Delimpo (Centerville), etcVetteMan wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2020 2:23 pmBeing that we are on a Basketball topic, I understand that this could be debated and never really settled, but I also think that he ( Kyle Ondera ) was the best athlete to ever come out of Jackson County.
