Schedule is easier but it still depends if the coach can recruit the hallways and get all the talent out. They have some returning players for a good base. Question becomes do they gear for finesse or power this year. With the right players coming out, they will be able to do both.

There are always meetings (and hope).... but nothing remotely concrete from what I'm hearing.

Many of the "usual suspects" keep in contact.

Here's some position by position early looks:

Offense:

Quarterback:
Ian Frasure (SR) has to be the early favorite, but could be pushed by Brayden Sturgell (Soph). Frasure saw his role grow as the season went on. He is more of a "pocket passer" than the last few starting QBs, but has legs that can be effective as well - he ran for 112 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Sturgell is an athlete with upside - but did miss a lot of his freshman season with an injury.

Running Back:
Caden McCarty (SR) returns after rushing for 755 yards and 12 TDs last season. McCarty was going to get close to 1,000 yards had he stayed healthy. Will be a big part of the offense. Jared Justice (JR) and Wyatt Jordan (JR) add depth.

Slot:
Traten Poling (JR) really came on strong in the slot as the season went on. The sophomore caught 10 passes for 147 yards and a touchdown while running for 107 yards on 19 carries. He rotated with Jonny McClelland (SR) who also returns after running for 39 yards on 8 carries and grabbing 6 passes for 66 yards. Sturgell might also fit the profile to see some playing time in the slot.

Receiver:
Castle and Mace caught 38 of the team's 62 completions - leaving a void at the outside receiver positions. Brandon Heft (SR) caught one pass and will likely see time at one of the outside receiver posts while Owen Angle (JR) and Justin Mustard (JR) may also fight for snaps. Poling and McClelland could also move to the outside and receiver might be a spot for some talented sophomores like Alex Thompson or Hunter Hill to earn time.

Tight end:
The Chieftains used more and more tight end and two tight end sets as the season progressed. Henry Pierce (SR) and Robby Leffler (Soph) should both gets looks here. Pierce was utilized at tight end last fall while Leffler was expected to punt as a freshman but missed the season due to injury. Simon Pierce (Soph) could also emerge here.

Tackle:
Keiton Arledge (JR) is a returning starter. Isaiah Campbell (JR) should get first crack at the other tackle post. Lane Welker (SR) was a starter with the JVs.

Interior line:
Quinn Walsh (SR) saw time at all three interior line positions and should be in line for a role up front. Tyler Kost (SR) and Carter Hodson (JR) should also get early reps and the chance to win spots. Eli Woltz (Soph) and Mason Linton (JR) are other possible contributors.

Other SOPHOMORES who could compete for playing time:
Skill Players: Varik Fick (RB), Tyler Dawson (WB), Easton Castle (SL), Izaac Swope (SL)

Linemen: Cayden Alford, Anthony McCune, Connor Carrier, Dalton Brooks, and Chase Hutchison

DEFENSE:

End:
Henry Pierce (SR) returns after a stellar season last fall, finishing second on the team with 61 total tackles including a team high 8 for loss. Justin Mustard (JR) emerged as a pass rush specialist while Quinn Walsh (SR) and Tyler Kost (SR) have played here in the past. Robby Leffler (Soph) Isaiah Campbell (JR) could play here, but may be saved for offensive duty only. Sophomores Cayden Alford or Simon Pierce are two to keep an eye on.

Tackle:
Mason Linton (JR) started multiple games at tackle and was generally the first player into the rotation. Eli Woltz (JR) and Lane Welker (SR) were contributors at tackle for the JVs. Wyatt Jordan (JR) is a running back who has the build to possibly see time on the defensive line.

Inside Linebacker:
Only Colton Ruff made more tackles from the linebacker spot than Quinn Walsh (SR). Walsh is a veteran, but has the versatility to possibly see time on the defensive line as well. Cody Carrell (SR) started the season opposite Ruff, but a knee injury ended his season in week two. Jared Justice (JR), Wyatt Jordan (JR), and Carson Hodson (SR) will compete for playing time here as well. JD Turner (Soph) should be able to help provide depth.

Outside Linebacker:
Jared Justice (JR) and Traten Poling (JR) will likely compete for a starting berth here with Mustard and/or Owen Angle (JR) adding depth.

Adjuster:
Jonny McClelland (SR) returns at Logan's "adjuster" position, a hybrid linebacker/defensive back. Justice and Poling provide depth and could be called upon if McClelland moves to the safety post.

Cornerbacks:
Castle and Mace saw the bulk of action here last year. Ian Frasure (SR) and Brandon Heft (SR) were the top backups, but Frasure may be limited on defense if he is the team's starting quarterback. Poling also saw snaps playing corner in addition to linebacker and could fill a starting role. Corner is also a position where a sophomore could earn playing time.

Safety:
Caden McCarty (SR) is a returning starter, but the coaches will likely want to save his reps for the offensive side of the ball if possible. McClelland, Frasure, and Angle are the returnees who could see minutes at safety while Varik Fick (Soph), Hunter Hill (Soph), Alex Thompson (Soph), and Brayden Sturgell (Soph) could be among the newcomers.


Special Teams:

Kicker: Zach Chapin (Soph) filled in for the departed Israel Bookman after Bookman suffered and injury and proved a capable backup.

Punter: Robby Leffler (Soph) was slated to help with punting chores last season before an injury and hopefully will be healthy to contribute here this fall.

This program is on the rise to what Logan football is accustomed to. Youngest son qualified for the OAC District Wreslting Tournament being held at the end of the month at the Logan Chieftan center. I cannot wait to get there and see it!!!!

With schedule strength anything less than 7-3 would be a disappointment, IMO. Players should be familiar with the new system now. Barring major injuries or defections there are no excuses.
