Sounds like Conference USA might be the next to be raided........

TCU expected to join Big East … and DOWN goes the MWC! What it means

Texas Christian has called a press conference for later this morning to reportedly announce that it will join the Big East — in all sports.

This is a blow to the WAC, which had hoped to provide a landing spot for TCU’s teams if it had joined the Big East in a football-only capacity.

And it’s a huge, but not-unexpected blow to the Mountain West Conference, which now has lost its three marquee programs (Utah, BYU and TCU) and probably will get crushed in upcoming media rights negotiations.

Starting in the summer of 2012, the Mountain West will basically be the new WAC.

Fresno State, Nevada, Hawaii (presumably) and Boise State (in 2011) will join existing members UNLV, San Diego State, Air Force, Wyoming, New Mexico and Colorado State.

That’s much, much worse than being the current MWC … but much, much better than being the revamped WAC.

The new MWC will have almost no chance at an BCS automatic bid, with TCU’s arrival enabling the Big East to tighten its grip on the ultra-valuable commodity.

(That’s the reason the Big East invited TCU in the first place: Strengthen its football profile while weakening the MWC. The Big East sure isn’t inviting TCU for its basketball program.)

So if you’re scoring at home: Yes, both the Mountain West and the WAC are much worse off than they were before all the realignment.

The Pac-10’s decision to invite Utah, sparking BYU’s exit from the Mountain West and all the succeeding dominoes … here comes the roar from BYU fans, proclaiming that Utah’s exit had nothing to do with BYU going independent … had the ultimate effect of maiming two conferences.

(The big dog’s gotta eat.)

In the wake of the latest news, here’s what I’m wondering:

*** Will TCU’s move have any impact on Hawaii’s decision to join the MWC (presumably for football only)?

You’d think this would make Hawaii more valuable to the MWC, but I also wonder if the school would see the diminished chance of the MWC attaining AQ status as a reason to stay in, and dominate, the WAC.

*** What impact, if any, will TCU’s departure have on further Mountain West expansion plans?

The conference will have 10 members (six old, four new) starting in 2012; that’s two short of the requirement to stage a football championship game.

(If the TV negotiations go as badly as expected, the league will need the revenue from a football title game.)

Past conversations with sources lead me to believe the MWC may take a run at the big-market Texas teams in Conference USA’s West division: Houston and SMU.

This could provide an opportunity for the WAC to pursue the remaining teams in the C-USA West, namely UTEP, Rice, Tulane and possibly Tulsa.

That opportunity could be enhanced if, as many expect, the Big East also invites Central Florida, from C-USA’s East division.

That would leave C-USA with five teams in the East and four in the West and potentially cause some serious shuffling in that league.

It sure seems like we haven’t seen the last of the realignment.

Villanova was asked/invited to become a football playing member of the conference sometime within the past two months. They have been a regular in FCS rankings and playoffs and I believe maybe even have a National Championship (not sure though). What it does for Big East 1) adds a football school without having to add a school for all sports. 2) Puts the conference one school closer to 12 teams and a conference championship game. 3) Philadelphia TV market.
Some of the negatives I've read include a small stadium with low attendance figures (read somewhere today the largest home crowd this year was 12,000 and they averaged only 8,000 plus) and Philadelphia more of a pro sports city. Small enrollment with small alumni base. Does nothing for strengthening the conference short term (long term benefits???).

Some other schools being mentioned and benefits are Central Florida (investing in and building their program, TV market, recruiting area), East Carolina (strong fan base, respectable program, new recruiting area), Memphis (TV market, recruiting area) and Houston (TV market, recruiting, natural rival for TCU), Notre Dame (nothing to say on this one).

Don't have the link for any of this information. Will post it if I come across it again.

Obviously none of these schools (besides ND of course) has much football tradition. IMO, the Big East is not going to attract a school from a current BCS conference unless the could come up with a big tv contract from ESPN or can start their own network. Without the big tv money a "raid" on C-USA and adding FCS school is the alternative for the Big East at this time.

Article talks about TCU's move to the Big East and also mentions invitation for Villanova to make the jump to FBS.

So now the question is.......has the MWC improved itself at all or remained even?

MWC gains - Boise State, Nevada, Fresno State, possibly Hawaii
MWC losses - Utah, BYU, TCU

The WAC is worse off and the MWC is just as good as the Wac is now. I still believe that the WAC and Sunbelt will merge at some point.

If the Big Ten can have 12 schools and the Big 12 can have 10 schools, I guess the Big EAST can have a school from Texas.

Over the years, for the most part, the Big East has made the right moves. Adding members, national basketball TV contract with ESPN. Big East football game on thursday or friday night on ESPN. The one downfall is that ND is not a member in football but all the other sports. So with that said, I guess TCU to the Big East will work out.

I still don't think the switching of conferences by schools is over by any means. Look for the Big East to do more. Look for the Big Ten to add 2 more members if 1 of them is ND. The SEC and the PAC 10 or 11 or 12 and the same with the Big 12 or whatever it is will all add at least 2 more members.

The ACC is slowly becoming a weak conference for football.

ND and NBC had better be careful, unless Kelly can make the Irish back into a national title contender and soon, NBC will be looking at adding a major conference to televise football instead of the Irish. Not sure when that contract is up. If it is too long and Kelly fails, NBC may get left out in the cold in terms of quality football games to televise. This isn't the Irish that your father watched with Lindsey Nelson broadcasting the games while Ara Parseghian was on the sidelines.

I hope Notre Dame remains cursed until they wise up and join the Big Ten.

I honestly don't think that this was the ideal move for TCU. Yes they needed to move to another conference, but why the Big East? The only reason I see them joining is because it is a weak conference that they can easily win in football and they needed the AQ BCS bid. I could see them joining the Big 12 (not sure if they were invited or not), but the Big East is not the conference they should have joined. Travel is going to be much farther for them, and since these are student-athletes trying to get an education, this takes away a lot of time in the classroom. While the Cowboys are also in the NFC East, these are professional athletes who can travel like that without a problem. The ideal conference would have been the Big 12, if they could find another team to join.

There is a ton of bad blood between TCU and Texas, dating back to them being passed over and ignored when the SWC and the Big 8 combined in the first place.

I wouldn't ever see TCU joining the conference ran by Texas.

Am I forgetting anybody?

They could even guarantee at least two of their teams would go bowling (Cotton and Sun) regardless of any other invitations.

Heck, they would never have to travel out of state except for the occasional non conference games with weenies like Oklahoma, USC or the like.

I'm on a roll now!!!
Gotta throw in Rice!!

The Texas schools were all in one league - along with Arkansas - the SWC. The SWC disbanded and it wasn't pretty when it happened. BCS leagues are looking to expand their geographical footprint, so I doubt this would ever happen again, even though it would make sense travel-wise.

I think it is a good move for both TCU and the Big East short term. With more changes coming how long it lasts remains to be seen.

Visited the TCU discussion boards last night and their fans seem to think Gary Patterson is their to stay. Wife is from the area and involved in community plus his salary $2.5 million a year. The move has created a lot of excitement for their fans anyway.
