Athens replaces 10 seniors from a team that would have been highly favorites to reach the regional round if not the final four.

Athens is technically the defending district champion as there was no tournament last year.

Athens will be young and a very new team but expect Athens to compete and win games this spring.

Team only has 3 players with varsity experience, Peyton Gail (OF) Will Matters (SS,2B), and Will Ginder (P/3B). Rest were on JV in 2019 or not in high school yet.

A lot of inexperience. Athens has fielded some real good teams these past few years.

Ended up getting to the scrimmage. Beautiful night for baseball. Good scrimmy. Both teams got better tonight. And that’s the only thing that matters: assessment and improvement.

Good luck to Athens this season, the Bulldogs have what it takes to defend their TVC crown. Hopefully we will get to see you guys at our house on 5/6.

Athens had no hits and scored only on walks. This games was also played during the Ohio basketball second round game. Lost focus might have been another issue?

Athens came back the next day to beat Belpre 15-1 in 7 innings in their final scrimmage. Season opener is next Wed vs Gallia Academy at home.

I don’t think there’s really anything to glean from the score of the Athens/FC scrim (which is why I didn’t post it.) Athens’ general inexperience at the varsity level, due to graduation and the cancelled season, is well-known and was apparent at select times on Monday. Between their first scrimmage vs a good Philo, their obliteration of Belpre the following night, the truth that Athens is a hallmark program in this part of the state, and the fact literally everyone they play has to rectify their programs past the cancelled season... I’m pretty confident in saying Athens will be just fine.

The other side of the score: unless anyone else was at the scrim or knows anything about FC’s team this year, the score just looks bad with absolutely no context.

Athens will open their season on Tuesday vs Gallia Academy. The game was moved up a day because of possible rain on Wednesday. Gametime 5pm Rannow field at Athens HS. Admission $3 Masks and Social Distancing required.
