What is the Correct Call?
What is the Correct Call?
I said I might put some real life game situations on here to see what the groups feels is the correct call.
The offensive team has the ball 3rd and 7 at their opponents 14 yard line. The QB scrambles towards the right sideline and fires a legal
forward pass to WR 84. The WR jumps in the air and his foot brushes the pylon during the jump. The WR successfully catches the pass and lands with both feet in bounds in he endzone.

I'd say he was out of bounds before he caught the pass. Should be no TD.Kurgan74 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 09, 2021 2:49 pm I said I might put some real life game situations on here to see what the groups feels is the correct call.

Re: What is the Correct Call?
In real life, both linesmen would be watching near LOS for rolling Qb. Back judge would be centered on field, so your saying he 2 closest officials would be 14 and 25 yards away, so the odds of them seeing the offense “brush” the pylon is a little far fetched. Sooooo, IMO, TD! Lol
Re: What is the Correct Call?
It is possible the officials would moss the brush, but if the officials did see it, what would be the call?eagles73Taylor wrote: ↑Mon Aug 09, 2021 3:55 pm In real life, both linesmen would be watching near LOS for rolling Qb. Re: What is the Correct Call?
Which side of the pylon did he touch? Inside to goal line, outside to out of bounds, the front or back toward endzone and field, or the top?

Re: What is the Correct Call?
Pylon is considered to be out of bounds, incomplete, if caught by the official.Kurgan74 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 09, 2021 2:49 pm I said I might put some real life game situations on here to see what the groups feels is the correct call.

Re: What is the Correct Call?
So here is the correct call. Several people fot a partially correct answer when the said it would be incomplete. Anytime a player touches anything along the sideline or endlines, other than an official or another player they are by rule out of bounds. High Schools playing by NFHS rules, do not have a re-establish position in bounds. Therefor, the receiver would be ruled out of bounds.
Now here is the part that was missing. No player is allowed to go out of bounds, on their own, and come back in bounds and participate in a play. If they do, this is a penalty for illegal participation.
The defense will have the choice to accept the 15 yard penalty from the previous spot and then replay 3rd down. They could decline the penalty (doubtful) and then i would be 4th down from the previous spot.

He brushed the pylon on his jump for the ball before he caught it. Yep, that's out of bounds. Probably get away with it in most games if it would happen real quick and the refs view was partially blocked. Pylons will wiggle if bumped, or even get knocked down, but a slight brush might not be seen in certain instances.
Re: What is the Correct Call?
you are correct that it could be missed, If the official missed the brush up against the pylon, then in all likelyhood the play would result in a TD. However, if the referee observes the touching or brushing of the pylon then the catch, by rule it would be a penalty for illegal participation.

Re: What is the Correct Call?
arent the pylons inside the end zone?? you hit the pylon in college you are in bounds
Re: What is the Correct Call?
Yes the pylon is considered Out of bounds. Any player who goes out of bounds on their own and comes back to influence a play is guilty of illegal participation. Thus the 15 yard penalty.

Re: What is the Correct Call?
Technically as originally stated it is incomplete because he did not return in bounds to participate he stepped out by hitting the pylon while airborne and touched ball while still airborne. IMO player has to return to ground to reestablish in bounds then influence the play to be called for illegal participation. Just something to think about.
Re: What is the Correct Call?
Question for anyone with football license - player returns to the field of play after being pushed out legally, while in the air during the return, he catches a ball. Is this a complete or incomplete pass? Does the rule indicate a player has to establish himself on the field of play before participating?
Re: What is the Correct Call?
Question, I knew about it being out of bounds but I was looking at it as illegal touching not illegal participation. Which illegal touching is a 5 yard penalty, what is making this an illegal participation penalty?? Don't believe I've seen a 15 yard penalty assessed to a WR that went out of bounds and came back in to catch the ball. Thanks for the insight.Kurgan74 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 10, 2021 1:16 pm So here is the correct call. Several people fot a partially correct answer when the said it would be incomplete.
