Who would have ever thought Buster Douglas would knock out Mike Tyson. Anything is possible, that's why they play
Re: Can Ironton beat Moeller?
No, Ironton cannot win this game. Moeller, and the other greater catholic league schools, are a different level of football.
First, Moeller only has 36 players listed on the varsity team, but all of those players except one are juniors and seniors. They have over 50 sophomores and 50 freshman; around 140 total boys playing football! So few players go both ways.
Second, Ironton cannot out muscle them. They are too big, too strong, and too deep. Ironton will not wear them down like they do other teams.
Third, Moeller has many D1 recruits and prospects. Talent everywhere. They also have lots of speed; speed Ironton has not seen before.
Fourth, Ironton’s offense is not dynamic enough. Too one dimensional against a team like Moeller that plays against some of the best teams and talent in the country.
Fifth, the Moeller QB is 6’6” 215# and can throw the ball all over the field. Ironton has not seen a passing game like this before.
Kudos to Ironton for scheduling this game, but the best outcome for Ironton is getting out of this game with minor injuries. Maybe help them with defending the pass when they see Tingle and Ridgewood.

Re: Can Ironton beat Moeller?
Ironton could win this game. Whomever mentioned depth is spot on and mentioned this isn’t the Moeller from the 1970’s and 1980’s is also correct. Lakota East isn’t great but DI nevertheless. I think that one area where Ironton might have an actual edge is overall speed on their defensive line. If they can make this a possession game and limit turnovers, they can definitely win the game. If it becomes high scoring, it’ll favor Moeller. Keep their athletes in check (as much as possible) and play keep away. Long drives that turn into scores. They can definitely be successful. If Moeller thinks that this game would be a pushover, they would have never scheduled it.

Re: Can Ironton beat Moeller?
Ironton has a chance yes.
Only if they
1 keep turnovers to a minimum.
2 Penalties
3 Pass defense will have to be greatly improved
4 No short fields make Moeller drive long drives
Ironton has the horses at running back to make Moeller work and keep the ball away but big plays will be key on Defense to beat Moeller

Re: Can Ironton beat Moeller?
Just for Ironton to schedule a team of this caliber speaks volumes to the current state of their program.
Win or lose this only strengthens the ability to get talented kids to move into their program. Unless it is proven they are doing something against the rules then kudos to Pendelton and staff.

Re: Can Ironton beat Moeller?
Didn’t Ironton beat a d1 school 2 years ago by a good margin? Depth does kill but you can never count a very talented team out. I’ll take ironton by 14+

Re: Can Ironton beat Moeller?
This.
Ironton could make it competitive; and they might.
The biggest tell recently on how different the ‘Big Six’ Catholics (Elder, LaSalle, Moeller, St. X; Ed and Ignatius) are — even in the worst of years — from the rest of high-tier teams was when Moeller beat Hartley 31-16 last year. Mind you, last year’s Moeller team is widely regarded in the Cincinnati area to be one of the worst ever teams in the program’s history. And that beating was on Hartley, an über-successful program that Ironton fans remember well.
Re: Can Ironton beat Moeller?
Yeah that's just a typical rule, I mean they played a D1 school in Sycamore last year and put a beat down on them, so just to say they have size, skill and depth because they're a D1 school doesn't really mean a lot. I mean Moeller once upon a time was on top and it sounds great especially with the schools they play. Reality for Moeller is 2020--1-4, 2019--2-8, 6-4 and 4-6 in 2018 and 2017 it's a great "big name" signing especially getting a D1 with those points but the question is can Ironton beat Moeller looks to me just going off last few years seems pretty apparent that they can unless Moeller has a quality class coming in. So it remains what does Moeller have returning?trojandave wrote: ↑Tue Aug 24, 2021 1:25 pm greygoose: I would say that Moeller has a size, skill, and depth advantage over the Fighting Tigers. Most generally that is common when large D1 schools are playing a school several divisions lower, especially a DV school.

Fair assesment. Gonna be a tough night for the Ironton secondary.RBH23 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 24, 2021 4:56 pm No, Ironton cannot win this game. Moeller, and the other greater catholic league schools, are a different level of football.

Re: Can Ironton beat Moeller?
It was/is a great decision. This is a "showcase" game. Its meant to gain exposure for Irontons program. Kinda how a lesser known recording artist will get a feature from a billboard artist. Its meant to expand Irontons market.FIDO wrote: ↑Tue Aug 24, 2021 9:37 pm Just for Ironton to schedule a team of this caliber speaks volumes to the current state of their program.

2nd purpose is to prepare them for a playoff run.
W/L is 3rd priority.
Welcome to big time prep sports in 2021. Even in the small towns.
Its all about marketing, exposure, experience.

Punchers chance.
At home vs Moellar Ironton will need to be AGGRESSIVE & deliberate all night. Both sides of the ball. They have to attack Moelllar and force the issue.

According to MaxPreps, Ironton is#25 in the state. Moeller is #41. So if the rankings mean anything at all, Ironton definitely has a shot. They're #2 in D-V by the way.

Re: Can Ironton beat Moeller?
Most would guess Moeller will win by a running clock. Hard to get ready for an offense you have never seen before. But it is high school football and upsets do happen. Coldwater somehow beat Cardinal Mooney

Re: Can Ironton beat Moeller?
Absolutely and I am a burg fan. Not trying to over estimate but Ohio is a very powerful football state this Ironton team is special I wouldn't be afraid to say they could beat about 75% or more of the country. They just seem Nasty kinda like that 2017 burg team maybe better. I'm definitely rooting for them to bring another trophy down south. It's definitely not burg's year..
