Fairfield Union 40
Logan Elm 31 a final

... a couple of things that have come out of the 2021-22 season as we begin looking to the post season is that 1. The LE coaching staff Head Coach Doug Stiverson/Asst. coaches Jeff Holbert & Nate Dropsey are outstanding! not a secret but THIS season after losing 4 starters who had been starters for 4 years, I feel THIS year is one of the trio's BEST coaching jobs ... they get everything out of the players on the floor, the system in place has developed the fundamentals necessary to be successful at the varsity level ... 2. 1st year boys varsity Coach Travis Shaeffer has done an equally outstanding job at the helm for Fairfield Union along with what has been the constant at FU for years now - Asst. Varsity Coach John Helber ... FU has 1 senior on the roster, what was to be a "building for next season" has turned into an excellent 1st campaign for Coach Shaeffer & Co. as the Falcons have won their last 4 outings/ with the win tonight, FU has won 7 of their last 8 games ... standing with a 15-6 record ... next year arrived a year early ... tonight's matchup between FU and LE was a battle of teams who COULD meet in the first round of district play should both win their sectional matchups ... with that in mind Logan Elm came into the game shorthanded with "big" man (for LE) Braylen Baker sitting out the game with a knee injury ... both teams played with intensity for 32 minutes, both teams played to not show their hand "Just in Case" the District Semi-final matchup comes to fruition ... neither team shot the ball well - Logan Elm ended up 3/21 from behind the arc while FU went 2/9 ... on the LE side of the napkin stat sheet without Baker in the paint - there was no inside game ... with nothing falling from the perimeter and no option in the paint ... the Braves settled for only 2 players scoring on the night Konner Starkey (13 pts) & Tanner Holbert (18 pts) ... everyone else came up empty for the game ... for Fairfield Union the Falcons had 6 players dent the scoresheet ...a more balanced attack ... more points in the paint - 22 points down on the block led by 6-5 jr. Ted Harrah's 10 pts/ and 6-6 soph Caleb Schmelzer's 7 pts down low ... the only perimeter scoring came from Ronnie Rowley's 2 triples (6pts) ... Fairfield Union 40 Logan Elm 31 a final ...

... Pfloyd's official "UN-official" Napkin Stats - Logan Elm ...

Scoring ... Tanner Holbert 18, Konner Starkey 13
3 Pointers ... 3/21 ... Tanner Holbert 2, Konner Starkey 1
FTs ... 8/8
TOs ... 7
PnP ... 5 fgs/ 10 points in the paint
PnT ... 0
Pbk ... 0 points off of offensive boards

... Pfloyd's official "UN-official" Napkin Stats - Fairfield Union ...

Scoring ... Ted Harrah 10, Brennen Rowles 9, Caleb Schmelzer 7, Ronnie Rowley 6, Caleb Redding 6, Owen Morgan 2
3 Pointers ... 2/9 ... Ronnie Rowley 2
FTs ... 12/16
TOs ... 6
PnP ... 11 fgs/ 22 points in the paint
PnT ... 0
Pbk ... 0

... 2 good teams who have an opportunity to advance in the post season ... although NOT a good shooting night - Tanner Holbert is one of the outstanding scorers in the SE District ... 18 points tonight, the jr shooting guard has had multiple 30pt games this season ... for FU this is the 2nd time I've see the Falcons in person ( saw them before Christmas vs Alexander) BIG improvement as the players have all settled into their roles, they look more comfortable in the offense - not thinking but reacting ... both Caleb Schmelzer and Caleb Redding add size/scoring in the paint on either side of Ted Harrah ... Rowels seemingly has been at the point for years (3 to be exact) the young man runs the offense and sets the tone on the defensive end for the Falcons ... the Falcons are sitting at #11 coming into this week - starting in the 24 spot ... improvement all season under the Coaches Shaeffer & Helber regime ... next year the Falcons will be in the Elite 8 in the preseason ...

... always good seeing talking to Coach Helber & Coach Shaeffer ... Smeltzy ! thanks for coming up to the Cheap Seats to talk hoops - good to see you again ! ... had the pleasure to sit with Coach Stiverson's Dad, Chris Stiverson for the entire game tonight - Chris knows his hoops and supports LE 100% ...

Good stuff, man. Thanks for coming north and getting eyes on post-Eversole FU — looks like they haven’t missed a beat if beating LE is a firm indicator.

It was a good game to take in. Coach Shaeffer is a great coach who will be continuing to build on a great program. Excited to watch them next year!

Only 2 players scored?

That’s kinda crazy

Baker being held out of the game was a BIG piece missing on a height challenged TEAM ... it was one of those nights (the night after they played Bloom Carroll) where nothing went in - at the rim shots, the inside 8 foot floaters, and literally nothing from behind the arc ...
