Philo 47 Athens 6 2022

Post by AHS_Stephens »

Bulldogs open up the 2022 season with their first-ever trip to Duncan Falls.

Philo won last season's meeting in blowout fashion,41-0 but the Bulldogs were missing many key players including their starting QB for that game due to a Covid outbreak the week of the game.

Bulldogs return much of their team as they only graduated 8 seniors. Athens is playing the same exact schedule from 2021 with home and way flipped.

I personally see Philo walking away with the win again this year, Athens losing Derek Welsh and Luke Brandes on both the offensive and defensive side is gonna hurt.

That being said I don't think it will be that big of a blow out as it was last year, I got Philo by 14

Luke Brandes is back as a senior, he will most likely be our lead running back. Landon Wheatley will be QB1.

I agree that it will be a closer game. It will be interesting to see how much Athens being healthy with their normal starters this year affects this game.

Bulldogs are mostly sophomore and junior loaded. Bulldogs only have 5 seniors including both Brandes and Wheatley

As you noted, Athens was missing their qb and a couple others.
Truth be told Philo played that game with their backup qb’s also that will be back this year as well. Philo did most of their damage on the ground so if there’s an improved passing game, it could get ugly. Overall I can see this as a normal week one game that’s kinda sloppy and both teams trying to figure out where they stand!

Athens is an very improved team from a year ago. In the Jamboree vs Trimble on Friday night and the varsity portion ended 7-7 and the JV game Athens won 30-6.

After watching the ph-med scrimmage that was 27-7 Philo after the first half it’s still tough to call this game. Left at half so not sure the format but ended 33-7. Definitely not the normal meadowbrook team we’ve seen the past5-6 years. Philo wasn’t bad but still not sure if they’ve taken the next step. Still can’t see Athens making up 41 points. Philo 33-14

I think you’re about right on the score differential, but think both teams score more. Wouldn’t be surprised at a 38-21 or a 45-28 game. Athens normally has athletes and can score, but their run defense is always awful and they struggle to stop people.

Good luck to the bulldogs this week. I believe you will see a much improved Athens team this year.

As I said on another thread somewhere, Philo is a sweep spot to catch a game. Good luck to both teams though I am hoping Athen eeks out the win,

Philo 27
Athens 6
Halftime

Athens had the ball in the red zone but throws an interception before half. Philo has a lot of size on the line

Athens was better than they were last year but I think Philo came out ready to play from the get go and didn’t wait till half way through the second quarter. Hopefully Athens rebounds and plays to their potential the rest of the year. Definitely some good kids on the team but just not as physical as they need to be. Philo will get a tough test next week at Carrollton.
