Congratulations to the Trojans on that first win.....and to Valley for putting up a real competitive fight.
The good..........both teams' offenses. Over 500 yards passing combined, with a number of individual players on both teams making big plays. Portsmouth has at least 4 receivers very capable of going the distance......Devin Lattimore, Nolan Heiland, Reade Pendleton, and Jayden Duncan. QB Tyler Duncan was outstanding, and as PTrojan59 mentioned, the pass protection was really good. Valley's QB George Arnett also had a great game, and Buckle (#7), as well as #10 and #5 all made good yardage in various ways. Noah Livingston was a monster on defense for PHS.
The not so good.......both teams' defenses. Over 600 yards combined and 70 points, with the Trojans scoring 35 points after halftime. 9 penalties way too many for PHS, while a couple of fumbles by the Indians really hurt them. Both teams missed XP's, and the Trojans missed a short FG.
Portsmouth has to improve on defense to play themselves into the top 2-3 of the OVC. The Trojans' offense is legit.....anybody they play will have a hard time containing their passing offense. PHS's pass defense came up with a couple of interceptions in the 2nd half, which was encouraging. But West with the hard running Sissel awaits next week. The Trojans will have to be more physical to contain the Senators' running attack.
Great facilities at Valley......the new athletic complex looks like a real jewel, and their stadium is underrated as one of the best in SE Ohio.
Very entertaining game.....didn't end until after 10 PM......if you like offense, there was no shortage of it last night.

Couldn’t agree more that stadium and facilities are absolutely perfect.trojandave wrote: Fri Aug 19, 2022 11:56 am Congratulations to the Trojans on that first win.....and to Valley for putting up a real competitive fight.

Re: Portsmouth @ Valley 2022 updates
Props to valley. If they had just a handful more kids I think they would of won. They came out guns blazing and the offensive line had there way with Portsmouth’s defense. But end of second quarter you saw hands on hips and not firing out of a stance so fatigue was kicking in. I was really impressed with Duncan he threw a really nice ball. Lattimore was hands down the best kid on the field last night. 1st quarter was ugly and lasted 40 minutes and Trojans couldn’t run a play without a penalty. Overall I was pretty impressed. West will be a different beast next week but we have the speed to play with anyone.

Congrats Trojans on a hard-fought win. It sounds like the Indians are going to be a tough out...hard to beat anybody committing 5 turnovers.

Colten Buckle is a slim tank— was wanting to see more out of him. I look forward to seeing him this year.
Devon Lattimore continues on his path to greatness. Would love to see him get some Carrie’s and short passes along with the deep routes. That kid just needs the ball and a little space to create his masterpieces.

Re: Portsmouth @ Valley 2022 updates
After taking in the game last night I felt Portsmouth had more depth at the skilled positions and had 4-5 skilled kids compared to Valley’s 3. Valley has to get Arnett going more running the football. Buckle is a workhorse and can do a little bit of everything. Not sure why Valley stayed in man pass coverage after continuing to get beat deep. I did see they switched up and put Buckle on Heiland and Nichols on Latimore but still got beat deep. Zone them up and put 2 safeties over the top. Duncan played well last night and I think he could have a very good season. Valley will get better and won’t see the speed like they saw last night on a night to night basis in SOC II.

Take away Portsmouth’s mental mistakes and they would have dominated. Valley is solid…very solid! Portsmouth will only get better…if they fix the mental mistakes!
