The Davis Poll 10/5/2015

Post by The Gloaming »

By Davis

Someone needs to build a time machine and travel back to the 1960’s cause just like the Beatles, College Football is all Shook up ah uh huh! We are finally starting to see the cream rise to the top and after week 5, here is how the Davis Poll looks.

1.Baylor (pv Rank 4)
2.TCU (pv Rank 7)
3.Utah (pv Rank 6)
4.Florida (pv Rank unranked)
5.LSU (pv Rank 1)
6.ohio state (pv Rank 5)
7.Alabama (pv Rank unranked)
8.Michigan State (pv Rank 3)
9.Clemson (pv Rank unranked)
10.Oklahoma (pv Rank unranked)

Davis Drop Outs: Ole Miss, UCLA, Georgia.

The Biggest Movers of the week go to Baylor, TCU, and Florida. The Biggest Losers are Ole Miss, LSU, ohio state, and Michigan State.

WHY THEY MOVED

Baylor has outscored opponents 255-104 through 4 games. In case you cant’ do math, that’s 64 points per game. The only offense with comparable numbers is conference foe TCU who has scored 201 points through 4 games (255 for the year). Led by Heisman hopefuls Seth Russell and Shock Linwood, the Bears offense, as hard as it may be to fathom, looks to be improved from last years group that scored 58ppg. The Bears may be a lock for the #1 spot for the next 5 or 6 weeks but they matchup at Kansas State, home with Oklahoma, at Oklahoma State, and a huge showdown with TCU on the road to wrap up the season, easily the most difficult 4 week stretch for any college football team this season. With the Big 12 emerging as the best conference in football, I wouldn’t be shocked if the Bears stub their toe late but at this point in the season, there is not a team that could score with this Offense…

Except for maybe TCU. Treyvon Boykin has the Horned Frogs offense rocking and rolling despite an injury to Heisman hopeful Kolby Listenbee. Jason Docston has emerged as the Nations top receiver with 42 receptions for 722 yards and 8 touchdowns. “It’s pretty easy when you have a guy like Trey’ throwing to me,” said Davis in an interview at his apartment. Boykin is clearly the Heisman who is approaching 2000 yards passing through 5 games and 19 touchdowns(2 on his feet). TCU is coming off of a drubbing of in state power Texas, 50-7, handing the Longhorns their biggest loss since 1997 and more importantly, destroying Coach Smiths in state recruiting. The stat to look at is those measly 7 points surrendered in garbage time. TCUs defense showed signs of life last week holding the Longhorns rushing attack to season low numbers and even lower numbers passing. The Froggies defense will get a boost with the return of some key starters on defense although the coach hasn’t told us who yet. Like Baylor, who can score with this team? Baylor.

The Florida Gators have crawled their prehistoric asses back into the mainstream with the demolition of arch-rival Ole Miss, a team that has owned the Gators for years. We were hesitant to put all our money on the Rebels and the Gators, led by a star quarterback who might be interested in the Heisman race, showed us why the Rebels are retreating all the way back to Tupelo or whatever city they’re from. Who cares anymore? Floridas defense is legit. The defensive line showed why they are the best in the nation and the secondary showed why they are the best in the nation. Translation: Floridas defense looks similar to the defense that smothered ohio state in 2006 which is bad news for everyone in the SEC. The one concern going forward is the schedule, although spaced to favor the gators, traveling to Death Valley will be a monster game. Home with Georgia is no cake walk with Nick Chubb coming at the defense all day and closing out the season with a possibly undefeated Florida State team present big challenges for the Gators if they want to make the Playoffs.

Biggest Losers

Where to begin? We saw teams lose which by default makes them losers and then some teams won and looked like losers. Let’s start with the biggest loser of all…

ohio state. I for one am getting pretty tired of railing on the buckeyes week after week without relent but these buckeyes, right now, are playing uninspired football. The disaster continued Saturday in Bloomington against Indiana who came into the contest 4-0. On paper, 4-0 is undefeated but analysts all over the United States understood that Indiana at 4-0 is due to a terrible non conference schedule that included 3 close games against Southern Illinois, Western Kentucky and Wake Forrest. What State is Western Kentucky in again? The buckeyes trailed 10-0 early before taking the lead but could never put Indiana away, a team without their star Running Back and Starting QB for the whole 2nd half. The offense is an absolute train wreck and that may be in large part due to the departing of Tom Herman to Houston, a thriving offensive team. Cardale Jones was able to fool viewers last season against a bad Wisconsin squad, overrated Alabama, and injured Oregon but now that he is headlining the buckeyes offense, he is being exposed for what he is, a 3rd string Quarterback. Calls for JT Barrett echo down the Ohio river as far south as Portsmouth but the fact remains that the buckeyes have the QB they need but are inexplicably playing him at HB. Braxton Miller is nothing more than a spin move highlight on this team when he should be calling the shots at Qb. At this point, I’d try out Joe Burrow behind center because Jones and Barrett are backups arguing over who should start like they’re in an episode of the Hills. Who is Heidi and why is Spencer so grumpy all of the time? Who cares, the buckeyes offense is a mess. The defense looked suspect Saturday as well. I can’t help but feel like this buckeye team is Florida State 2014. Praise be to the schedule buckeye fans, just hope the buckeyes don’t get a false positive from Cardale against a good opponent, if they can find one.

Michigan State doesn’t deserve a lot of attention and we aren’t going to give it to them. Purdue had a chance to shut up Spartan Stadium on Saturday afternoon on the last drive but then they remembered that they are Purdue, falling 24-21 to Sparty. The Davis Poll clearly took into account that Oregon was obliterated by Utah as the Utes are screaming up the Poll while the Spartans, who squeaked out a win over the Ducks at home, are in free fall mode. October 17th is two weeks out and the Michigan Wolverines are coming to burn East Lansing down. Coach Izzo had better get Connor Cook and company refocused because Khaki Jim has Michigan playing exceptional football. Our guess is Sparty falls flat against their rival and we can go back to understanding that just because Michigan State beat Stanford, doesn’t make them a legit football program.

LSU welcomed Eastern Michigan, the worst program in college football for years now, into Death Valley. Certianly we could expect Leonard Fournette to amass 200+ yards, more touchdowns and the Tigers would roll to a 40 point victory right? Well kind of. Fournette, in only his 4th game this season ran for 233 yards and 3 touchdowns bring his total to 864 yards for the year, the most in college football history through 4 games. The problem for LSU is the quarterback play is not there. Les Miles has trotted out 2 quarterbacks now and is having limited results. 81 yards on 4 of 15 passing is a recipe for disaster when Fournette gets slowed down, assuming that happens but with a dynamic back pounding out 200 yards a game, the passing game should be easy. It’s not for the Tigers and they will get bit by the Gators, rolled by the Tide or whatever an Aggie is and does if they can’t find a passing attack.

Florida at #4? They BARELY beat Kentucky by 5 and Tennessee by 1. To have them going from Not Ranked to 4th is a flat out JOKE.

Just for the sake of comparison, below listed is the latest Sagarin ratings. Strength of schedule, record, and scores make up the criteria.
Admittedly using this criteria makes for odd rankings this early in the season, but tends to reflect reality as the season progresses. The
only poll that matters is by the CFP committee, so all other polls and rankings should be used for the fun of debate.

It's all fun to talk about but it really doesn't matter. There is a group of people at the end that will pick who they beleive are the 4 best teams in the country and they will play it out. If the bucks win out they will be in.
