Reds bring in Newman, trade Kyle Farmer to Twins
From MLB.com
CINCINNATI -- At Friday’s deadline to offer 2023 contracts to players under club control, the Reds made a pair of trades that affected their situation at shortstop.
The first deal sent infielder Kyle Farmer to the Twins for Minor League right-handed pitcher Casey Legumina, who was ranked as Minnesota’s No. 27 prospect by MLB Pipeline at the time of the trade. In a separate move, right-handed reliever Dauri Moreta was sent to the Pirates for middle infielder Kevin Newman.

Meh, Farmer, a fan favorite, was an arbitration salary dump and Newman is at best a stopgap until one of the Reds many shortstop prospects make the big club.
Reds also reach a contract to Nick Senzel. I guess Cincy see something in the player most of us don't.

Reds sign Luke Maile to one-year deal
From MLB.com:
Cincinnati Reds vice president, general manager Nick Krall today announced the signing of Covington Catholic High School graduate catch Luke Maile to a 1-year contract through the 2023 season.
Maile, 31, originally was signed out of the University of Kentucky by the Tampa Bay Rays after he was selected in the eighth round of the June 2012 first-year player draft.
He made his Major League debut in 2015 and has made 307 career appearances for the Rays, Blue Jays, Brewers and Guardians. He made all 240 of his starts at catcher. (excerpt)

A hometown, likely inexpensive, player signed to be backup catcher for the Reds. Apparently decent with the glove but light with the stick given his career batting average of .207.

Reds acquire catcher/outfielder Blake Sabol in Rule 5 draft then trade him to Giants for cash and PTBNL.

As to the MLB winter meetings, the Reds inaction seems to indicate they are willing to endure another 90 + loss season with the roster they have. Let Ashcraft, Greene, India, Lodolo, and Stephenson develop while hoping some of their newly acquired minor league talent is ready to go in 2024 or 2025.

Indeed, but Milwaukee has a smaller market than Cincy but yet they seem to be able to compete.

Re: 2023 Cincinnati Reds
Here we go! Some moves have been made today - and I'm a fan of both!!
1. The Reds have signed OF/1B Wil Myers to a 1 year/7.5M deal with a mutual option for 2024.
Myers only played in 77 games last season but has even career splits vs RHP and LHP as well as being a former Rookie of the Year. Good pickup!
https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/353 ... -24-option
2. The Reds today also brought back a familiar face with catcher Curt Casali to a 1 year contract with an option for 2024 and in the process DFA'd Mike Moustakas!! Curt played with the Reds from 2018-2020 serving as a backup catcher and will assume the same role.

Re: 2023 Cincinnati Reds
Agree, decent moves to fill needs without long term commitments or big dollars. As to Moose, it is better to eat his contract than have him continue to take up a roster spot. A serviceable starting pitcher or two are needed so the Reds can take pressure of their young pitchers. The Reds will still not be anywhere near a .500 ball club, but it does appear the front office is sticking to their rebuild plan of prospects rather than big dollar vets.BigGuy10 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 22, 2022 2:16 pm Here we go! Re: 2023 Cincinnati Reds
From MLB
The Reds added experience to their pitching staff on Friday by signing right-hander Luke Weaver to a one-year, $2 million contract.
Utility player Matt Reynolds was designated for assignment to make room for Weaver on Cincinnati's 40-man roster.
Weaver, 29, is a veteran of seven Major League seasons with the Cardinals, D-backs and Royals. Over 115 games (81 starts), he has a 24-36 record with a 4.79 ERA.
If Weaver joins the Reds' rotation, he would offer a veteran presence to a young group that's led by Nick Lodolo, Hunter Greene and Graham Ashcraft.

Re: 2023 Cincinnati Reds
If the Reds stay healthy and their core 3 young pitchers actually develop, Cincy could win 70 games. If not, they could be historically bad. My main interest is to see if any of their prospects can make the team as the season progresses. De La Cruz, Arroyo, and McClain's future may start in 2023.
