3 things…
1.) hell of a game
2.) Ironton and Burg are 15-11 against each other since 2000. This is a great and close series. Most are tight games. It’s great.
3.) questioning coaching kills me. Woodward is 151-37 as burg coach. 81% winning. The man and their staff know what they’re doing.
BINGO
Said same thing all weekend. Pendleton is 58-11 as Hc at Ironton. He lost 5 of the 11 games his first season after getting the job in May. Including 3 losses in State Championship games. That’s an 84% winning percentage. I think it’s safe to say 99% of the programs in the state would take them both. They both know what they are doing.
Burg and Ironton should be winning titles like ML, Coldwater, and Kirtland. Burg and IHS both have as good or even better talent, both schools have incredible support and facilities, and both schools have plenty of kids that want to play football.
So why are they not winning at that level? For Burg, it’s the style of offense. It doesn’t work well against really good teams and opens the team to potentially devastating mistakes. The mistakes from the IHS game are prime examples. Kirtland and ML simply do not throw two end-zone interceptions. They don’t make those mistakes.
As for IHS, their problems are penalties and lack of discipline at times. Again, they almost gave Burg the game due to their penalties; and this is not the first time this has happened. Also, Pendleton’s/OC’s play calling on the second to last drive of the game should be shown to other coaches as to what not to do when winning at the end. That was simply god awful. Mistakes Kirtland and ML coaches NEVER make!
And before people hop on here to say “but we can’t compete against those schools…”, keep in mind that ML has won all of their state titles under one coach, same with Kirtland. Coldwater has won theirs under two coaches. So obviously winning starts with the right coach.
Also, we have seem similar dominance in other sports from SEO. Estep’s baseball teams at Burg, and now Ruby’s softball team. And what do both have in common? Their teams never beat themselves. Their fundamentals are incredible! That’s what Burg and IHS football are lacking With regards to being the very best.
