Burg’s play calling has been counterproductive for a long time; even during the Holden and Matthews years. The state championship was won by their D despite what the offense did at the end.BTWNTHE__ wrote: ↑Mon Aug 28, 2023 9:08 pmAlmost feel like the playcalling is counterproductive to the potential for burg right now and its unfortunate.RBH23 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 28, 2023 1:29 pmWhat you stated above may be true, but Burg has been a dumpster fire in too many areas. They just out gained McNich 410 yards to 150, yet barely won the game! Until Burg cleans up their act, most decent teams could be a problem.
Plus, Jackson isn’t as bad as the Ironton score. They needed to play a clean game to have a chance, but that didn’t happen, and Ironton made them pay.

They had a qb who could sling it as well as Reyes a solid back. Offensive line was great. That 2017 team was the best I’ve seen in a long time. Minus Athens 2014.
Re: Week 3 burg at jackson
Burg had exceptional talent compared to nearly everyone they played that year; especially during the regular season. Most regular season opponents were simply no match.Ironmen98 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 30, 2023 8:49 pmJeaux Burreaux wrote: ↑Wed Aug 30, 2023 8:46 pmThey had a qb who could sling it as well as Reyes a solid back. The flaws with the O first appeared in the Columbus Academy game where the spread offense was completely shutdown in the first half. Fortunately Burg came out in the second and went to the power run. Academy had no answers.
Against Madison, Burg’s O sputtered again. Fortunately special teams and the D turned that game around.
Finally, in the state finals, Burg O struggled throughout until the miraculous comeback at the end. Up to that point, the O struggled but the D kept the game close.
That Burg team won because their DL lived in the opposing team’s backfield, and the entire team tackled extremely well. They were the best tackling team I’ve seen out of SEO. Truly looked like Kirtland or a MAC school. That was the key to Burg’s success.
The following year, Burg returned a large percentage of their O but lost many key defensive players. When the O faltered against JM, the D wasn’t there to save them like before. And the O simply could not keep up despite having Salyers, Holden, and Matthews. Scored over 30 against JM in 2017, put up a whopping 14 in 2018.
Now compare that to Athens under Burrow. Athens scored over 50 in the state championship game. Too bad they didn’t have Burg’s D.

Re: WK3 Burg @ Jackson
Jackson needs to get #28 the ball more. He runs hard and downhill not trying to do too much. #6 and #8 are beasts too, but I think they are too worried about going east-west and not north-south. If Jackson can control the LOS they should win this game as I think they have the better playmakers.

Defense is where The Borrow Bulldogs could have seen a defeat if the SEOAL had stayed together.RBH23 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 30, 2023 10:28 pmBurg had exceptional talent compared to nearly everyone they played that year; especially during the regular season. Re: WK3 Burg @ Jackson
Wheelersburg currently holds a 15-10 all time record vs Jackson. Jackson has won the last three in the series. This is typically a very good matchup and helps both teams win or lose.
Re: WK3 Burg @ Jackson
Lattimore plays in a different gear than any of the Ironman. Not a knock at all to anyone. If lattimore gets touches he can be the difference maker. This is a very even matchup, imo.

Good to see the Pirates touting their transfers. You’ve built a great program that kids want to be a part of, be proud!
