How Ironton & Burg can both win a state title in D5

Post by Tri_State79 »

For Ironton

Better O line play. Better D line play.
Better discipline
Playcalling has to improve.
Talent is already there. Talent just needs to be grittier and I feel play with more edge. More aggressive. Start playing hungry consistently.

For Burg

More patience offensively
Playcalling on offense needs to compliment the talent.
Like Ironton, Burg already has talent. They need to utilize it better on the sideline and in the box.
Burg players need the staff to call plays that fit what they do best so the confidence comes early and sustains itself for a young team.

In 24 pressure is on both staffs

Pretty good analysis for both teams. Ironton has struggled with untimely penalties that have killed drives on offense or extended drives on defense.
Burg I feel can help themselves by keeping it simple on offense. Establish a running game and use a simple but effective pass attack to keep a defense honest.
These are two of the most storied programs in our neck of the woods. Lutz and Miller both had hard playing, disciplined teams that could match up against anyone. I believe both the current coaches are a great fit for their teams. Just have to tweak a few things. Just my humble opinions as a high school football fan.

Not likely at all that either team will win the State championship. Or for that matter any other team from southeastern ohio. There have been 3 state champions from from Southeastern Ohio since 1989. That being Wheelersburg, once and Amanda Clear Creek twice. Not sure about Wheelersburg, but as for ironton. As long as Pendleton is there apparently He has told the kids that if it's an aggressive play, he doesn't care about a personal foul. So with that attitude and no desire to change that.
And with the school's north of interstate, seventy having a huge talent advantage not likely to see a state champion from southeastern ohio.

Prep is the big problem for Ironton and Burg right now. They are recruiting heavily and have improved in their coaching. If prep had more discipline in special teams and overall football play, they'd probably win D5 this year. They were the most talented in all of D5.

I don't understand why either team don't throw to the TE more!! Ironton used to kill teams by throwing a little short pass over the middle to the TE for 6-8 yards a pop and then would just go away from it.

Look at the great teams in the NFL. They throw the crap out of the ball to the TE!!

Well, you're right. The likelihood isn't great. But for now it's more of trying to catch lighting In a bottle any given season for both programs in a state title game. One program can get there alot but they get beat. And the other program just never finds itself beyond their own region. So right now it's about finding that accomplishment again. Same thing it is for everybody. Titles for programs and players are just a part & you find out alot about kids and staffs returning who got to win one. Some champions build on it. Some live in the moment and then that's it. Anyway right now to me it's about finding one. Then let's see how they build on it. So if you improve some of this stuff I think the odds are better to finish. For each.

Interesting thing about R19

Prep Burg Ironton = all very talented. None suffer their talent on the field.

But all 3 suffer at least somewhat their own in game leadership. And that result gives us each of their respective issues that everyone has pointed out all season. Discipline. Playcalling. Etc. None of these teams lost for lack of talent.

Now I'm just keeping it real and talking football. So this remark isn't personal or singularly directed at anybody.

Collectively the talent on the field in 2023 for Ironton Prep and Burg has outperformed the talent on the sidelines running the show.

Agree that coaching is the weakest link in these programs. And for two of them the lack of discipline is obvious. But that can be expected when they rely heavily on transfers, recruits or whatever they refer to them as. Harder to discipline a player who “moved in” I guess.

Idk why some teams don't use the TE more like that. Ironton could have abused defenses with one of the 6ft 4 kids who played qb throwing to the other OR man I like how deebo Samuel would be lined up in a lil hybrid TE set That's an underrated comment.

I think all 3 programs if you ask the staffs today would tell you they all had more than their fair share of unforced errors in 2023.

Anyway my point is the guys in the headphones gotta get better for all 3 in 2024. Gotta start demanding more from these guys. Why can't Ironton and Burg & Prep win at a high level? We all agree the talents there for all 3. So they've been given the talent. The support. Etc.
The next part of the job is results right?

But part of discipline is pushing the players to their potential. Not so easy to do when you’re worried they might go elsewhere. Even more so when you talked them into playing for you. I mean we’ve all seen it at the local level. The great athlete that didn’t play football finally allows the coach to talk him into playing and the coach is afraid to push him too hard because he might quit. Now think of having five or six of them on the team.

It's not as uncommon as you think to have lots of success w "recruits" it's just takes the right staff. Happens everyday. Let em leave. We can replace em it's next man up cause "we recruit", right? 😆

Will burg be forced to ONCE AGAIN hit the recruiting trail to remain competitive with Prep and Ironton? 👀
