Warren 68
Gallia Academy 35 a final

... Warren was playing it's first game after losing on the road to an impressive Linsly WVa team by 5 ... 58-63 ... Gallia Academy would be playing it's first back-to-back games of the season having played the Marietta Tigers in the French City Friday night in a hard fought, physical contest taken by MHS 53-45 ... in talking with Coach Harrison of GAHS prior to the game he offered up that right now his Blue Devils are looking to find points, finding scorers, players adjusting to new roles ... when you play in the OVC and the non-conference games that the Blue Devils have on their schedule (ie. Marietta last night/Warren on the back end of a back to back , Fairland on Tuesday) - finding scoring can be a painstaking process with the "on-the-job" training of the OVC ... tonight at the Warrior Coliseum was such a night for GAHS - the Devils looked tired - 30 turnovers (many due to the 32 minutes of WHS pressure but others were "tired miscues" "ball handling" errors ... no double digit scorer for GAHS tonight ... 1/9 from behind the arc - much due to "no looks allowed" by the Warrior perimeter/on ball defense ... much like last night with Marietta the GAHS offense was pushed out to the perimeter - where last night vs MHS both Alex Blair and Kenyon Franklin were able to create either getting to the rim or getting looks for 3's - the Warrior D took it ALL away - no looks on the perimeter, no penetration from outside into the paint - the Warrior defensive rotation denied looks on the inside while Warren's Big Man in the Middle 6-6 Trent Taylor & Co. rejected 5 shots in the paint on the night ... the Warren defense took away both the inside and outside offensive game of Gallia Academy - which only left one outcome ... Warren by as many as they wanted ... Warren 68 Gallia Academy 35 a final ...

... Coach Maddox's Warriors took control of both ends of the floor early in the opening quarter - defensively turning GAHS over 8 times ... giving the Devil offense few if any looks at the rim - Kenyon Franklin led GAHS with 5 first period points (a triple plus a drive to the rim), PG Wesley Saunders with a midrange 2 pointer/ Gabe Hammond added 2pts low on the blocks to finish the Gallia scoring ... Warren went to work getting the ball into the paint to the 6-6 senior big man Trent Taylor ... Taylor took a pass at the rim for an easy 2pts ... 5 fgs in the period for Taylor all finishing at the rim as the big man owned the paint at both ends of the floor ... finishing with 2 blocks/ 11 points in the paint/ running mate Chase Lupardus added a pair fgs in the paint (4pts) ... 5-9 swing forward Jacob Seally had 2 pts on the block ... off the bench Tyler Cochran had a drive the rim for 2pts and 1/2 from the line ... in all WHS had 18 pts in the paint in the opening quarter ... the lone perimeter make was a 3 pointer by jr. 2 guard Connor Barry ... Warren 23 Gallia Academy 9 after 1 ... period number 2 was more of the same ... 4 fgs in the paint with Taylor adding 2 more (4pts in the qtr 15 pts in the half)... Warren's sharp shooting PG Julian Stadelman made his first fg of the game in the 2nd on a drive to the rim (2pts) ... Connor Barry hit trey #2 for the junior (6pts in the half) ... of the bench Hayden Wells went 2/2 from the free throw stripe and Nick Cressey with 2pts and 1/2 from the line ended the scoring on the WHS side ... the Warren 3/4 court pressure/ run & jump trapping D held GAHS to 2 fgs in the qtr Gabe Hammond with 4 pts (1 fg + 2FTs) . Saunders added a transition bucket (2pts) ... thru 2 qtrs GAHS turned the ball over 16 times while the Warriors turned the ball over only 4 ... Warren 37 Gallia Academy 16 a the half ... Defense travels - even if "traveling" is from the home locker room to your home floor - it's a good thing as Warren didn't shoot the ball well from the perimeter - 4/22 from behind the three point line on the game ... when you can keep your opponent from "getting looks" on the perimeter- effectively taking away their offense - you don't need to shoot the ball that well ... in the 3rd GAHS got the ball into the paint to 6-7 jr Cade Mock who responded with 2 fgs at the rim (4pts) in the period ... Saunders/Blair/Franklin each had a 2 pointer in the qtr to give Gallia it's only double digit scoring qtr at 10 points ... Warren matched the GAHS scoring with Jacob Seally's 5 pts ( a triple and 2/2 from the line) ... 2 pointers each for Trent Taylor/jr Nick Cressey and Tyson Cochran ... Warren 49 Gallia Academy 26 after 3 ... the final period saw both benches getting playing time after the first 4:30 of clock was in the books - both teams looking to get to the final buzzer without a starter or rotation player getting hurt (Lupardus for Warren left the game with a tweaked ankle) ... Gallia Academy got scoring from Saunders/Blair 2pts each ... off the bench Braydon Rathburn 2pts and Rees Toler 2pts ... on the Warren side of the court Julian Stadelman added a pair drives to the rim (4pts/6 for the game) ... Connor Barry a trey and 2/2 from the line (5pts) ... 6-5 Lefty Hayden Wells found the bottom of the net from down low in the paint for 3 fgs and 2/2 from the line (8pts in the qtr/10 for the game) ... this one belonged to the Warriors from the opening tip on the outcome was never in doubt ... Warren 68 Gallia Academy 35 a final ...

Thanks pfloyd. Been nice to see the devils make this more competitive. Coach Maddox coaches the game at a very high level and stresses, no mandates team basketball much like we use to see in the old French city. Sounds like we were a little fortunate that Warren shot 18% from behind the arc. The blue will improve. But the road ahead is very tough.
