5 Divisions?

What does everyone think about soccer going to 4 divisions?

The more the merrier imo. Would be fun to see. I wonder who would be in d3/d4 and if any of the smaller schools drop from d2 to d3 based off how they do the divisional assignments.

It will be awesome when burg moves down to D4 and somehow Minford moves up to D1.

There is a chance that they could add a fourth division all the way to a seventh division. It will be interesting to see what happens in the January meeting.

If there were any more than 4 divisions, there would be so few teams in each that teams would have to realign to different districts. Then again, when do all of the OHSAA decisions make sense to most of us....

I think all those extra divisions are for basketball and baseball..soccer would be good with 4 divisions imo.

I agree seven would be too many, but still, the word is anywhere between four and seven divisions for all sports. That would shrink the gap with division 1. The largest school comes in at 1300 boys and the last school in d1 has 346.

Would be a huge help to a school like Chillicothe who is on the low-low end of D1. They have a really good program, but it’s really difficult to win consistently in D1, so an extra division would mean they would be D2 and likely much more successful in the postseason.

Logan too. They typically match-up well with D2 Athens and Marietta.

I like the idea of four divisions

We are so used to 200 or so teams in a division. Its funny to compare it to KY football, they have 30-40 teams in each division.

Yes, in football. And I disagree with that. Kentucky shouldn't have more than four classes in football. Competition was better during that era.

In track, Kentucky and Ohio have the same amount of classes/divisions -- and in the other sports, Kentucky doesn't have a class system. The regions (16) are separated by geography and the winner from each region qualifies for the state tournament. There's also always been an All 'A' State Tournament for basketball for the smallest 70 or so schools in enrollment (again, the winner in each region qualifies for state in the All 'A'), and over the last five years, there's been a 2A state offering for medium-sized schools. As a result, Kentucky churns out more high-level D-I talent in the non-football sports, I believe, because kids are tested at a higher level during the season itself.

Expanding the divisions beyond five in any sport is a bad move in my opinion. I'm good with four and no more. Boys and girls soccer in Ohio should have a fourth division, but nothing beyond that.

Six and beyond is way too much in any sport. I would agree with that expansion of divisions IF the state had a large population boom, but that's not occurring right now.

From 1970 to present the population increase for the entire state has been 1.1 million over that time. It increased over 900,000 alone from just 1960 to 1970. Over the first three years of this decade, the population of the state is on track to drop for the first time ever.

States like Georgia and Florida have a large number of classes, but Georgia's population increase has been at or above 10.3 percent or more in every decade since 1950. It's up nearly 400,000 people in just the three years while Ohio's population has dropped by about 14,000 during that same time frame. Florida's population growth is slowing down by its standards but by everybody else's, it's still crazy as it's seeing 900,000 new residents of the state over the last three years.

So in short, I can see why those states would expand classes as they have done because the population growth warrants it. Ohio's does not.

yes 4 divisions would be good for boys soccer. Girls soccer at least in the Southeast would be too sparse as there are a few less teams i think(could be wrong).

Think it would spice things up and give a few more teams a chance to win sectionals, districts, etc. not sure what the cutoff number would be for those divisions though.

4 divisions makes a lot of sense for the smaller schools. I hope this happens.

They're floating 5 divisions now for soccer.
D 1 -- top 64
D2 through D5 evenly divided.

That would be about 125 schools per division for the boys and 115 per division for the girls.

If that would be true, for the girls side of things, this would be the divisional breakdown of the number of teams in each.
D1-0
D2-2
D3-9
D4-13
D5-6
With several divisions having very small numbers, I could see teams getting moved to another district for tournament play. D2 Logan and Chillicothe could be in the central district (as they have been for D1). For D5, I could see all of those schools going to the SW district, since they are mostly all of the SHAC schools (with the exceptions of Minford and Southeastern) and the SHAC is closer to the SW than SE anyway.

There could also be some sort of a merge with the SE and E districts, but it would be quite a haul from Lynchburg to Berlin Hiland if something like that were to happen.

The boys side of things would be very similar, but more D5 schools (Clay, SJ, NB, etc)

Does not seem to make much sense to me to drop Hillsboro from 2 to 3 and also bring Chillicothe into 3 from 1. I believe Chillicothe boys have never lost an FAC game. Great program but they are a much larger school which is what more divisions are for. There are another 30 teams from 1 going to 3. Not sure if anyone else finds division 3 as odd or not?

It is my understanding that the current proposal has Division I and Division II with 64 teams each of the largest schools. The final schools would be divided equally in Division III, Division IV, and Division V. I believe there are 517 schools who fielded a soccer team last season. After taking away the 128 (Division I & II) that would leave 389 schools for Divisions III, IV, and V. Approximately 130 schools in each Division.

So, how many divisions are we expecting? What happens to Western Pike, Portsmouth Clay, New Boston Glenwood, Ironton St.Joe, Whiteoak, South Webster and the other schools who have less than a 100 enrollment?

Those schools should all be in the new D5
