Jackson 48
Vinton County 28 a final

... not sure ANYONE would have said that Jackson would not have played Vinton County closer than they did in the 67-51 loss from the last meeting BUT to completely take away the VC offense ... limiting the Vikings to 28 points, I would guess that VC has scored 28 in a single quarter a time or 3 throughout the season ... to be held to 28 for 32 minutes - I wouldn't have taken THAT bet ... NOW , I DO KNOW that there aren't many coaches given a week+ , the video of the 67-51 loss to take apart and adjust to , and come up with a game plan to beat a team averaging almost 67 ppg - there are NO coaches better than Coach Morrow! I would NOT want to play him in the game of RISK or Battleship - Coach is a tactician, develops a game plan AND then is able to convey to his troops/team what THEY NEED TO DO to execute the game plan ... Max Morrow is a motivator of players ... if you have watched the Ironmen over Coach Morrow's coaching tenure - his players would run through walls for TEAM & Coach Morrow ... great game plan, even better execution by a group of sophomores and the lone upperclassmen Boston Campbell ... Campbell is THE guy that those "super sophs" look to out on the floor to instill the "we've got this" attitude - in the first matchup , the 16 point loss in McArthur, Campbell was held to 5 points - finishing in the paint in that first game wasn't an option for the senior (note to self - Campbell HAD TO get to the rim - put his body on the defensive player- either score or get fouled) ... in the 1st matchup JHS put up 16 threes - lots of one & done possessions for the Ironmen on those long rebounds ... adjustment - the Ironmen were going to attack the rim, attack the boards at both ends ... Defense travels whether you are at home or on the road - Jackson plays as physical D as anyone - at McArthur, the Ironmen gave up 8 of 16 threes - adjustment - make the offensive players move, not spot up 3's , give them only tough angles - contested corners/contested wing shots ... last night VC was 2/18 from behind the arc ... tables turned - contested 3 balls turned into long defensive boards for the Ironmen (VC had 0 offensive boards in the 1st quarter ... only 1 fg on a Garrett Brown drive to the rim in the opening quarter) ... Boston Campbell got the ball in the paint, went the rim, got fouled twice, 4 for 4 from the line ...Stephen Jenkins took it to the rim for 2pts... Bhodi Wolford followed the Jenkins' 2 pter with a trey and midrange jumper (5pts) ... Campbell attacked the rim for his 4 straight FT attempts and makes ... Jackson set the tone - they were going to the rim, they were going to get to the rim or get fouled doing it - they accomplished both as Brown and 6-6 Ashton Allman each picked up 2 early fouls defending down low ... defensively - giving up no easy shots on perimeter, nothing easy in the paint - if the bigs are on the bench they "ain't" getting boards and/or putback buckets ... Jackson 11 Vinton County 4 after 1 ... at the time, who knew that Vinton County would not get closer than 5 points the rest of the game ... defensive/offensive control of the game - execution of the game plan ... the Vikings added 7 points in the 2nd quarter - for a team averaging 67 ppg an 11 pt HALF had to have them thinking "Who are these guys?!" ... Hayden Reynolds gave the Vikings a spark with 2/2 from the line and a trey ... the only other points in the qtr was a 2 point transition bucket by Cobra Sharp ... the 2 offensive weapons for VC - Sharp & Garrett- had 2pts and 3pts in the HALF respectively ... VC as a team was 1/8 from downtown ... 7 turnovers ... the Ironmen put up 9 pts in the 2nd ... as the senior Campbell drained an uncontested 3 ball to open the period ... Coach Morrow's troops stayed in the paint for 3 fgs - a drive by Ryan Seimetz for 2pts/ Wolford got into the paint for 2 pts & one (missing on the FT) ... Campbell finished out the JHS scoring with a 2pter inside the 6 foot range (9 pts in the half by Campbell/ 7pts for Wolford) ... Jackson 20 Vinton County 11 at the half ... Knowing you have an opponent handcuffed, right where you want them - THINKING , trying to figure out how to get the ball in the basket, trying to come up with adjustments that will make the basket bigger so some of those shots start to find the bottom of the net ...the 3rd quarter started on a positive note for VC as Garrett did "Garrett things" - backed his defender down into the paint, then hit a stepback, off of one foot jumper for 2pts, followed by the first offensive board & putback bucket for the Vikings on a Parker Shonborn stick back 2pts ... a 4-0 Viking run ... 15-20 with 6:43 to play in the 3rd ... 2 possession game ... Bhodi Wolford answered with a steal, transition 2pter & one ... back to an 8 point advantage ... a Stephen Jenkins drive into the paint for 2pts ... at 3:35 in the qtr Jackson led 27-19 ... defense - the art of keeping the opponent from getting the shots THEY want to take from WHERE THEY WANT TO TAKE THEM ... Jackson held the Vikings scoreless the final 3:35 of the quarter ... Jackson is a team that KNOWS that if your opponent "ain't" scoring , WE don't HAVE TO score ! as the Ironmen only added 2 pts on their own side of the score sheet ... +2 in the final 3:35 ... Jackson 29 Vinton County 19 after 3 quarters ... everyone has felt this before - the harder you try the worse a situation gets ... the 4th quarter was such a quarter for the Vikings ... 8 minutes to play ... win or go home ... a senior laden team - we HAVE TO MAKE it happen NOW ... VC applied the fullcourt pressure, jumped the ball on the double teams looking to turnover the Ironmen ... for their efforts, Vinton County gave up 4 transition buckets to Jackson, layups at the rim - 2 by Bhodi Wolford (4pts/14 for the game) / 2 by Boston Campbell (5pts/ 18 pts for the game)... Stephen Jenkins a putback bucket to go with 2/2 from the line ( 4pts/ 8 on the game) / Charlie Wolford 4pts in the paint / Ryan Seimetz adding 2 pts on a drive to the rim finished off the scoring as ALL five Jackson starters scored in the final period ... 19 pts for the team ... the VC TEAM was held to 9 pts in the qtr. ... no double-digit scoring quarters for the Vikings on the night, not a single player for VC in double digits scoring-wise on the night - JHS defense/execution sends the Ironmen to the Sectional Final vs Warren in Logan Friday night @ 6:15pm ... Jackson 48 Vinton County 28 a final ...

... the napkin stats say it all ... 2/18 from beyond the arc ... if you're not scoring outside you have to go inside - VC couldn't/didn't only 7 fgs down low with only 1fg being off of an offensive board & stickback ... if you aren't scoring offensively you turn to your defense - get the turnovers/transition game going - didn't happen as Vinton County only showed 1 fg/2 point in the transition game ... almost 40 points under their ppg average for the season ... excellent season by Coach Kight and the Vikings , TVC Ohio Champs going undefeated in league play ...

...
